As we head into the weekend, 20th Century Fox has shifted a number of their biggest upcoming releases, including Dark Phoenix, Gambit, & Alita: Battle Angel. Plus, they've dated an Untitled Deadpool Movie?

Hot on the heels of that fiery trailer debut, 20th Century Fox has decided to move Dark Phoenix, the latest chapter in their blockbuster X-Men saga, from February to June 7, 2019.

While the timing of the move may seem puzzling, Deadline reports that the decision was strategic in nature as it will allow Dark Phoenix to obtain a much larger opening in China, a highly lucrative market where the teaser trailer racked up over 44 million views within the first 24 hours of release. Additionally, the studio will still be able to utilize premium screens from all across the globe for the film's release since they had previously reserved the prime summer date for the perpetually delayed Gambit.

Speaking of Gambit, the Channing Tatum-led spinoff has been pushed back yet again, this time moving to March 13, 2020. Considering the Disney/Fox merger will be complete before the end of next summer, this may actually be one of the first casualties of the deal if it doesn't manage to go into production before the end of the current calendar year.

The studio has also moved Alita: Battle Angel from this winter's jam-packed December 21st date to February 14, 2019, which is probably an extremely wise move considering its nearly $200 million budget. According to reports, the VFX-heavy film is finished, so the delay has nothing to do with any post-production issues. They merely wanted to get away from the December date that already has Warner Bros.' Aquaman, Paramount's Bumblebee, Universal's Welcome to Marwen, Sony's Holmes and Watson, and Shah Rukh Khan's Zero slated to release.

In lieu of Alita, Fox will now be releasing an Untitled Deadpool Movie on December 21st. It's unclear what exactly this movie is, but rumor has it that it will actually be a PG-13 re-release of Deadpool 2 with some additional content featuring Fred Savage reprising his role from The Princess Bride. However, instead of Peter Falk, it'll be Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), who sits down to tell him a deeply disturbing bedtime story.

@CaptainAmerica @GoldGuy -

how so?

1) A perpetually rescheduled, rushed and rehashed Phoenix saga this new team didn't even earn yet with a new Jean we barely saw in the last film that we're supposed to be concerned about turning "bad" in this one?

2) Announcing a Gambit rom/sex comedy (according to FOX) which won't see the light of day?

3) A Deadpool 2 PG-13 cash grab with bonus content that should have just been in the Bluray/Digital copies?

@Humperdink - how is a movie with 2 years of production time rushed?

@Ryguy88 -

how is a movie with 2 years of production time rushed?

I said..."rushed and rehashed DARK PHOENIX saga".

They've only had ONE (poorly received) movie with this new team, they weren't even the core focus, and they're already moving on to the Phoenix saga (which we've seen before) with a new Jean we barely know or saw as being good now turning bad. Because of that her dramatic turn has little to no real impact on the audience.

That's how it's rushed.
The production isn't smooth either with reshoots and rescheduling.

Any thoughts on my other valid points?

@Humperdink - I guess we will see how it turns out but this story was set up in the previous film and they've been working on it for a long enough time so it's hardly rushed.

@Humperdink - the PG-13 rerelease of Desdpool 2 is definitely weird though. The company is going down so I'm guessing they just want to cash in as much as possible. Either that or they are setting up a kid friendly version to fit into the MCU.

@knocturnalzen10 - moving Dark Phoenix to a better date and removing a movie which probably won’t get made away from said date.

I'm very interested in Alita, but....

They seem to have no idea what they're doing? Like, Dark Phoenix is going to be a mess, Gambit will probably not happen (thank god), and there is no reason for a DP 2 pg-13 release. Maybe to get some extra $$$ before the merger with a younger audience?

Looked interesting. Like it could have continued allowing the separate x-films to really carve out their own unique niche's like Logan and Deadpool.

@Mrcool210 - Others have claimed to me that it's because they want to prove to Marvel/Disney that Deadpool can make money rated PG-13 and that it is a last shot attempt at getting it included in the MCU when it is made official.

Not saying that is why, but that's what I've heard/been told.

Spock0Clock - 9/28/2018, 2:44 PM
@L0RDbuckethead - As someone who posited that theory, I want to stress it's just a thought that occurred to me. I have no inside information at all.

There's not a lot of direct historical analogies to follow this kind of behavior, so we're in uncharted territories.

@Spock0Clock - True. I guess I should've specified that I was told this from other users on this site.

I wouldn't wanna be making up rumors like some of our Editor overlords do...
