DARK PHOENIX Quietly Ends Theatrical Run As Lowest Grossing X-MEN Movie Of All-Time

Fox's Dark Phoenix was meant to serve as the climax of 19 years of cinematic mutant history before Marvel Studios rebooted the franchise for the MCU. Instead, audiences simply shrugged their shoulders.

According to Box Office Mojo, the domestic theatrical run for X-Men: Dark Phoenix officially ended on 08/15 and the final numbers aren't pretty.

The film's opening weekend of $32.8M ranks dead last, well below the next closest film, 2013's The Wolverine, which grossed $53.1M in its first weekend.

Worldwide, the box office numbers are even bleaker, with Dark Phoenix's final tally of $252.2M falling well short of the first X-Men film's $296.3M - which it earned back in 2000.

Dark Phoenix had an estimated production budget of $200M so Disney singling out the film as a key reason why its 3Q projections fell short might not be as farfetched as some skeptics believe.

If you missed Dark Phoenix in theaters (and it looks as if many of you did) the film will arrive on home video Sept. 3 (digital) and Sept. 17 (blu-ray/DVD).
