Simon Kinberg Says That If He Directs X-MEN: SUPERNOVA, He'll Also Write The Screenplay

Logan producer Simon Kinberg once again addresses reports that he'll take the helm of the next X-Men movie, but if he does, expect him to also write the screenplay. Is that good news or bad?

Simon Kinberg has been heavily involved in Fox's Marvel properties for some time now as a producer and writer, though he's not someone who inspires a lot of faith in fans thanks to the likes of X-Men: The Last Stand, Fantastic Four, and X-Men: Apocalypse. None of that has stopped the studio from considering him to take the helm of X-Men: Supernova despite the fact that he's a first-time director.

Well, talking to Deadline, Kinberg confirmed that if he does ultimately sign on to direct the movie, he will also write it, presumably as the only screenwriter based on the comments he makes below.

"I’ve read those reports. If I were to direct, I would certainly write. As someone who started his career as a writer then transitioned into being a writer-producer, when I make that transition into directing, I would definitely want to be the writer as well. It’s because I can’t imagine directing something that I didn’t create myself. Having made many great movies, the ones I feel the most emotionally connected to are the ones I wrote."

Depending on how you feel about Kinberg, that's either going to come as very good or very bad news, but one thing we know not to expect in his X-Men movie is Wolverine. Asked again about recasting the character now Hugh Jackman has hung up the claws, Kinberg made it clear that they have no plans to replace the Australian actor just yet, and when they do, they'll be looking for his approval.

"We haven't even thought of the next iteration of Wolverine," he confirmed. "For all of us, we were keeping our fingers crossed that the audiences would respond to Logan the way they have. I can’t visualise in my head another Wolverine but if that day ever comes, we would talk to Hugh about it."
