A REGULAR comicbook fan's take on Fox's new installment of the X-Men Franchise. Is it a Bust or a Must Watch? [Not a spoiler free review, you've been warned.]

I finally watched X-Men First Class, I am probably one of the last few in this site but this won’t stop me from putting in my two cents in rating and reviewing the movie.  First, I think I need to say that this review will be peppered with a lot of *SPOILERS* for the unlucky few who have not seen it yet.

Before I watched X-MEN First Class I avoided as much as possible any news spoilers and read any reviews, to have a more personal appreciation of the film (which is not an easy feat when you frequent this siteJ).  Therefore, you have to pardon me if at times I might be echoing some of the sentiments already given by other reviewers.

Now on to the movie- If you are not much of a comicbook fan and just a regular moviegoer I think this movie will be enjoyable.  The movie has a James Bond mixed with a Harry Potter vibe into it, which I think “Joe Public” has a liking for.

If you are a comicbook fan, then this movie could go either way.  If you are a comicbook fan who easily accepts alternate universes/realities, and if you could have that state of mind going in watching this movie, then you will be fine as well.  However, if you are a comicgeek who sticks strongly to canon then the movie will present many problems for you, good luck!

The Review

The characters in this movie actually looks a good deal like their comicbook counterparts, some better than others.  The Professor and Magneto started out different from what we are accustomed to, but later fall into a familiar place.  Mystique, not much of a comicbook adaptation there but they have run with this design on the previous films and it still works here.  The full “reveal” and her acceptance of who she is a high-point for the character.  The cameo of Rebecca Romijn is short but sweet, an odd nod to continuity considering how many changes they went with in this movie.   Beast started out looking normal except for his big feet, and the first time we see him in his furry-self felt a bit odd and too “make-uppy”, and the actor’s voice just doesn’t sound right when he was in “full Beast” mode.  By the way do not expect any explanation on why he looks normal in X2 and back to furry Beast in the third movie, though I do like the implied explanation on how he got his blue tinged from Mystique.  The other X-characters actually look good, and if you can get past why they were in this movie, then you can totally enjoy it.  I have to say I also like Kevin Bacon’s portrayal of Sebastian Shaw, the main villain of this movie.  Even though he does not look much like his comic counterpart, and at time the movie character felt a bit more like Mr. Sinister.  Emma Frost I think was the closest adaptation they got, except for the part of her having her diamond form so early on her career but that is just the fanboy in me nitpicking.  Something bothered me as well in relation to her Diamond skin, because while she was in this form Magneto was able to crack her neck.    She should have not cracked that easily.  Many questions arose from this movie and not much explanation like; Havok’s relationship with Cyclops, connection between Emma Frost in this movie and in Wolverine Origins, Azazel’s link to Nightcrawler, and many more.  Then again, if this is your first X-Men movie those things will not really matter.  In addition, for those who wait for the credits to finish I will inform you ahead that there are no Easter eggs attach - boohoo.

I just want to say that for me the story was good and serviceable, but I am starting to feel that Bryan Singer has this knack of disregarding things he does not like.  Which I feel is a bit lazy on his part as a writer, a good writer can turn crappy ideas and make them gold, not pretend that they do not exist.  He did it before by disregarding Superman 3 & 4 and telling people that his Superman Returns movie is a sequel to Donner’s Superman 2.  Now, he is doing it again by disregarding X-Men 3 and X-Men Origins : Wolverine, by completely stepping on the toes of those movie.  Here are just a few examples, where do you insert the time Professor X and Magneto went to visit a young Jean Grey?  And the time the Professor saved the young mutants in Stryker’s island.  In both of this account, the Professor is bald and standing, which would be difficult considering the state of Charles Xavier at the end of this movie.  However, to be fair to X-Men First Class I did like their interpretation on how the Professor ended up on his chair.   The nuclear missile crisis is a good nod to Magneto’s first villainous act in the comics.  The 1960s setting works as well, the atmosphere of the era is a good fit for the character’s development, and I probably want to watch more adventure set in this period.

Matthew Vaughn, was no doubt a good director, and actually was the one who gives credence to this movie considering many things working against it.  Even with its long running time, I did not feel that the movie had any dragging moments.    The FX was good, and each of the character has a moment to showcase their abilities (you could see a good amount of money went to this part, in contrast to the other X-Men movies).  The blue and gold costume was a bit tongue-in-cheek but I actually favored it more than the leather outfits and at the very least, it is respectful to its comicbook origin.  The musical score was a bit fun, and reflects a lot on the era that this movie was suppose to happen.

Summing it all up, X-MEN first class is a good movie but not without its bumps.  I have gone in to this movie not expecting much, I guess with the lowered expectation it is easier to be blown away.  I will probably watch this movie a few more times; I will let you know how it stands up in repeat viewing.

And last thing Wolverine’s cameo was a blast, though my wife enjoyed that a bit more than me.

Big fan of the chart also! It's easier to read for dummies like me.

Azazel has all Nightcrawler's powers and a whole lot more.. .
Nightcrawler wouldn't stand a chance against his dad, that fight isn't fair at all.
Nightcrawler can travel through the demon dimension, stick to walls, and fight really well.
Azazel is is telepathic, a master with blades, a master of dark magic, eternal life, he can shoot beams, and he can travel in an out of the demon dimension, and some other stuff.
Seriously not fair at all.

"So-So" acting? LMAO! And you do realise that Bryan Singer didn't write the script? It was Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman. You're also worrying far too much about the relation to the past movies...pretty ridiculous when it was clearly a reboot. (as Vaughn himself recently stated)

FYI, not just a few of us haven't seen it yet, THE ENTIRE [frick]ING USA HASN"T SEEN IT. for that reason I'm just gonna assume it was a good review. Good job. I think.

@Joshw

Actually Singer wrote the screenplay for the movie, Vaughn and Goldman wrote the script

why do people keep acting like the x2 beast..CAMEO was some pivotal screen time lol

it was like 10 seconds on a tv screen in a bar when mystique was gonna stab that officer with mercury no one remembers it other than obsessive fan boys i did'nt remember it till fanboys constantly bring it up like he was an actual character in x men 2.

Oh and on that human form on the tv screen of beast yeah that can easily be explained

@DarkKnight7
What is the difference between a script and a screenplay? I thought they were the same thing. Are you saying that he came up with the story or plot? Or are you saying that all 3 of them wrote the movie?
DarkKnight7
DarkKnight7 - 6/2/2011, 7:39 PM
@ Astromerc

Yes their is a very big difference.I'm in film school and learning a lot about writing for film, but im majoring in directing(film and television production), don't worry i thought it was all the same to. Screenplay is the person who comes up with story and writes it like a book but in screenplay form and sets up the script for the actors, basically the come up with the story . Script is the person that writes the actual dialogue for for the actors and the environment and whats going on in the movie. For example Avatar James cameron wrote the screenplay but had writers write the script. And yes I'm saying he came up with the story.Which is probably why there is so much inconstinsencies with the film, because Singer, and Vaughn ignore the last two movies

All I have to say is, I love that chart!
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 6/2/2011, 8:01 PM
I like the chart. Just don't get how it can score a 4 out of 5 for faithfulness to the comics other than it has X-Men characters in the movie. If it's an original storyline than it shouldn't get a 4 for fitting into the actual comic storyline. Even Snyder and Goldman admit it doesn't fit into the comic storyline. It's like you put in a reason to justify a 4 but the reason contradicts the category.

I agree with everything Pollmaster said, especially about Singer ignoring continuity... I had two things in this movie that were a bit hard to accept, Alex Summers and Stryker being older than he was in the 2nd X-Men. Other than that its a must see in theatres, was more memorable to me than Thor. I didn't give Thor a 2nd screening but I just saw this a second time.. I didn't have any problems with it since it was announced and had a feeling it would be good but never expected it to blow me away. There is also a scene with a small tiny design that is so close to the comics that made it the most memorable for me.. Even if you doubted this movie from the start, you should still see it, just think of it as an alternate universe with an amazingly well told story, lol...

@Spidersocks that was strykers dad. if you listen to xavier he says 'you were also thinking about your son, william, which was quite nice' and havok is older than scott in the ultimate comics, according to some people on here. but yes the film is quite brilliant. saw it twice.which i havent done with a film since the dark knight
Spidersocks
Spidersocks - 6/2/2011, 8:28 PM
@Punchmanster wow.... saw it twice and didn't see it in my head until now, lol... Thanks man. Also didn't know that about Alex, Yea I also haven't seen a film twice in theaters since Dark Knight. Everything in this movie was pleasing for someone who loves a great story, especially a comic book story... you go in and 15 minutes in youre relaxed and ready for something thats almost be believable, like if Kennedy actually knew about mutants.
SageMode
SageMode - 6/2/2011, 8:39 PM
inconsistency. If Havok was already a teenager at the time of John F Kennedy's presidency, would'nt that make him older then Cyclops? SMH. FAIL!!!!!!

I am extremely happy that the concensous has labled this movie more or less a pretty good flick.

If its a good movie, then I think the roster & character changes will be a minor annoyance.

Can't wait for next week. :0)

I just saw it. LOVED it. I'd go as far as to say it was as good as Batman Begins. And definitely not a reboot, although it is very clear there are no [frick]s to be given about Origins or X3. Which is fine.

if they would have made the first 3 movies and wv that way it would have to be one of the most grossing movie series ever. the only thing that i thought was a fail was Erik's costume at the end. and the wv cameo was funny but it would had been better to she him in action or something. but best one out of all the movies. also funny the credits said that there was storm troopers some where in the move. 2 of them.

o yeah X-men first class was a bad title. should have been Magnetos Origins or birth of the brotherhood. x doesn't start the first class in the movie.

Sweet review @ POLL!

And agreed the title shouldn't be First Class!

X-MEN: ORIGINS seems more fitting.
Rolanddeschain19
Rolanddeschain19 - 6/3/2011, 11:16 AM
the thing that worries me, is now this film is successfull, its likey there will be more origin/prequal stories.

i love anything x men, but i so badly want x men to have more sequals.

the things that didnt add up like the wheel chair and beast being hairy before x 2, does anoy me. i think they should re edit that sceen and put somthing else there connected to a sequal.

i think raven was amazing in this movie, shes just give even more strength to the charactor for the later movies.
it was so weird seeing her with compassion and not the evil bitch she ushallly is, the fact that shes almost kills charly in x 1, now even comes across even more sinister, now we know how close they were as pals.

erm was banshee irish, i cant remember?

oh somthing ive always wanted to ask the frineds of this site, does anyone else count the game, as a proper x men movie story, the one with the sentinaults set between x2 and 3. i do think its amazing.
CapFan79
CapFan79 - 6/3/2011, 5:17 PM
I loved the film. They got the 60's and a lot situational stuff totally perfect. Fassbender is awesome. My only concerns were the issues with X3 and Prof X cameo in Origins. I hope there's a sequel where maybe Erik and Xavier can reconcile and continue to rebuild cerebro and find more mutants (like the opening of X3) but another event permanently drives them apart.
