Rodrigo Santoro On His Return As Xerxes In 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE

Santoro, who reprises his role as Xerxes in Warner Bros.' 300 sequel/prequel, discusses returning to the role and his preparation for playing the character again. He also comments on the film's relation to the original 2007 movie.

Speaking with Coming Soon while promoting Heleno, actor Rodrigo Santoro discusses his returning to the role of King Xerxes in Warner Bros.' 300: Rise Of An Empire, a follow-up to Zack Snyder's 2007 Frank Miller adaptation. He comments on his preparation for his performance, as well as working with green screen and how FX will help enhance aspects of the character. He also talks about how the film will be connected to the original 300, confirming that some of it will be set before the first film and some after, but that it will mostly take place during the events of the prior movie.

"I had to shave, I had to work out again, I had to go back to Xerxes. It's the same character," Santoro says. "There's little new things - a little before, a little after - but most of the movie, it's during… kind of the same time where the first movie takes place. There's a lot going on. It's hard, the green screen, it's a different way of working. It's really challenging to work that way and the character wears a lot and Xerxes is a giant. He's almost not human, which is a poetic license. It comes from a graphic novel so it's not based in real history, so that character is very very tall and his voice is like thunder and that's the description of this character. So there's a couple special FX and tricks that have to be done to accomplish that figure so I do scenes by myself. It's interesting, it's a lot of work."

300: Rise Of An Empire also stars Eva Green and Sullivan Stapleton. The film is set to hit theaters August 2nd, 2013.

300 has been called...on this site also...perhaps the perfect movie. I would agree.

Its a TARGET for $5 also !

I'm a hater (of this movie) so I'm gonna hate.

300 was one of the worst CBM in history, and based on possibly Miller's worst comic. Not only was it all style and no substance, but there was something underlying that was just plain lazy about taking an amazing real historical event, but because the author lacked the ability to make a compelling drama out of it, he filled it with fantasy crap.

Truly one of the most embarrassing CBM yet made. It hurts my view of humanity to know that they are making a sequel.

I'm guessing you want to see more of him.
NorrinRaddical - 12/6/2012, 7:38 AM
so does this mean i'm going to have to listen to a lot MORE of that stupid f**king voice effect?

This comes out the week after The Wolverine. So in good fashion I'm going to skip that flawed FOX film and watch 300pt2 on it's release date. Since unlike Xmen:Origins 300 was a good film.

Who's directing this?
SimyJo - 12/6/2012, 7:54 AM

300 was a badass film.

i'm sorry, but you're a moron if you expected any sort of substance going in. an even bigger moron if you expected it to be faithful to the history books. it's supposed to be a big dumb testosterone-filled action movie, and it was certainly a lot more entertaining than any of the transformers films.

but this prequel or whatever.... i'm not sure if i care about this.
thosemortalmen - 12/6/2012, 10:23 AM
@godzillafart: there is substances and drama and tough choices in that movie that the characters have to deal with. So i dunno if we saw the same movie or not. Then again you're a hater especially Zack's, so why am i'm arguing it with you?
GodzillaKart - 12/6/2012, 1:54 PM
@Blackster: I agree with your first sentence...just remove the ass after the word "bad".

I'll take my big dumb action movies more in the form of a Die Hard 4. At least it knows it's supposed to be dumb and ends up being a fun ride.
GodzillaKart - 12/6/2012, 1:58 PM
@thosemortalmen: False. I think his Dawn of the Dead was great, Watchmen was mostly great (with a few scenes that were sexy when they should have been gritty or slightly pathetic) and I am VERY hopeful and excited about MOS.

300 and the 20 minutes of SuckerPunch I saw were all style and no substance. Real shit. Having a character make "tough choices" does not a good movie make...especially if it is told with the ham fist Snyder used in 300.

Good for the crowd that can watch others play video games for hours, but bad for the cinema loving crowd.

300 was a good flick, but there's no need or want for this. Overkill for a buck.
AztecRainGod - 12/6/2012, 3:46 PM
Meh. I will watch this on bluray, same as 300.
GodzillaKart - 12/7/2012, 7:31 AM
@SuspenseSmith: LOL! That was better on all levels than the theatrical version of 300.
