Various Korean websites are reporting that actress Kim Soo Hyun has been chosen to star in the highly anticipated sequel to Marvel's The Avengers. Hyun will reportedly play the major role of a doctor who will appear within the middle act of the film and serve as a partner to Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark/Iron Man. It's been said that over 40 actresses auditioned, including top stars. Joss Whedon reportedly visited Korea in December 2013 for the various rounds of auditions. A staff member present at the auditions has said that Marvel wanted an actress fluent in English, and that Hyun fit the role the best. It has been reported that Marvel is keeping quiet on this news and has yet to make an official announcement.

"The Daily SuperHero has a few of its insiders with an ear to the ground listening in on conversations. One insider, who is the same one who told me that Marvel was eyeing Bradley Cooper for a role nearly a year before it was announced he would voice Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy, managed to snag a bit of intriguing information."

It feels like Marvel is just adding Asian stars in order to try and appear more global (IE: A big deal was made over Chinese actors during Iron Man 3 filming, they had about ten seconds of screen time).

Hopefully she does well. My guess, she gives Stark the enhanced Extremsis
Praetorian - 1/28/2014, 10:00 PM
Not sure who she'd play from the comics. Probably somebody completely original.
Kurne - 1/28/2014, 10:01 PM
Yeah poor Dr. Wu and Fan Bingbing :P

Who cares?
MrCBM56 - 1/28/2014, 10:06 PM
Sounds cool. So I guess her character and RDJ will create Ultron. Idk. I can't wait for this!

Yeah a major role. Just like Xueqi Wang was supposed to play in IM3.
SuperCat - 1/28/2014, 10:54 PM
Not familiar with her work but good for her!
HypeExMachina - 1/28/2014, 10:59 PM
I bet he is playing another Mandarin decoy
or The Ancient One to set up in Doctor Strange

This Korea news is really turning up for Age of Ultron... I'm still going by Roger Wardell's word that Tony only creates the body for Ultron. Maybe Stark goes to Korea for help in doing so (not the Vibranium, hopefully)?????
Kurne - 1/28/2014, 11:05 PM

Nope. Not even a Joss Whedon movie, unfortunately.
AVEN - 1/28/2014, 11:20 PM
Oh cool beans, man! I have high expectations about this movie

Marvel sees a huge potential in the Chinese/Korean/Japanese market for their movies, the actors that were cast in IM3 were for select scenes shown only in the Asian markets. I think there was a large portion filmed in Shanghai that was not shown in US theaters.
IMO they avoided an actual asian Mandarin to not alienate asians. That would have not went over well with civil rights groups (the character despite how integral to IM's history is still a terrible asian caricature) as well as asian overseas markets. They would less likely to see a foreign film if the heroes were all white and the villain asian. Just speculation but I'm not going to put it past Marvel to cast an asian Danny Rand to pull in more $$$.

also its my first time posting on CBM! been a long time reader.

Welcome to the fray @ThorOdinson

I concur, seems like a smart move to cater for 2/3 of the world's population.

Im betting he ends up in hospital and makes some time with hot asian doctor lady. "me fix you long time!"

...i may have crossed the line.

GANGNAM STYLE ..."OHH Sexy doctor"

Welcome to the comment section ThorOdinson. I sure hope you know what you are getting yourself into.

I doubt Marvel ever seriously considered casting an Asian actor to play the Mandarin. China's international film market has regulations stricter than that of France. It's pretty well known that The Dark Knight was rejected due to issues regarding "cultural sensitivities", which many suspected had something to do with the portrayal of the Hong Kong Businessman.

At the end of the day, nothing will ever come between the studio and a potential market, and China is one in which they truly need to fight for acceptance.

Suzi Endo/Cybermancer?

Why dont they start putting these actresses in major character roles.... Even if its just for a cameo, make the role important to some degree
TheAbaryMan369 - 1/29/2014, 4:15 AM
Ms Marvel!
npamusic - 1/29/2014, 5:08 AM
@TheAbaryMan LOL. good joke. She won't be Ms. Marvel, sorry.

Interesting casting.. But.. what will she be helping Tony with, within the film, in the "middle act"?

TheClemster - 1/29/2014, 5:17 AM
Lots of Korean actors casted lately.

Good for them!!!
MexicanChinman - 1/29/2014, 6:57 AM
That's racist. Not Asians are doctors. Haha jk.
npamusic - 1/29/2014, 7:23 AM
"Kim Soo Hyun has a lot of major scenes in the movie, and she is the only new character in 'Avengers 2."

She's not the 'only' new character of the film. You forgot to mention that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are also new characters introduced in the film (as well as the antagonists, Ultron and Baron Von Strucker)
marvel72 - 1/29/2014, 7:24 AM
should cast someone from china as well, that always pays off.
DrDoom - 1/29/2014, 7:48 AM
She's hot
KaneVonDoom - 1/29/2014, 8:00 AM
I wouldn't be too bummed if she was Wasp.
BritishMonkey - 1/29/2014, 3:57 PM
Daughter of the real Mandarin, heh.
I have no clue who she could possibly be but that's my best guess, Mandarin's daughter posing as an accomplice to Tony to get closer to him.
AGoodHonestMan - 1/29/2014, 7:17 PM
I call bull on the Doctor stuff. What was the report last time? A villian? I say she's gonna be Madame Hydra. I know Viper's Hungarian but I think since Fox used her for their Wolverine movie I'm guessing Marvel's looking to give the character a different twist in order for the General Audience to not get confused.

Master's of Evil

Baron Struker
Madame Hydra
Scarlet Witch

With today's announcement of the Vision to the cast, I read this article again and had some thoughts. Could she possibly be Mantis? Joss Whedon mentioned the era of Avengers he grew up with seem to be the time of issues 100 to 130 volume 1. Her storyline has her becoming the Celestial Madonna and may connect her to the Guardians of the Galaxy which she has appeared with. Just a thought.
