Mark Ruffalo Compares Bruce Banner's HULK Transformation To An "Addiction Problem"

One of the main mysteries for fans when it comes to Marvel's The Avengers has always been whether we would see a Hulk who was out of control, and a threat to the public and his teammates. A few things have since been cleared up and from what we now know the not so jolly green giant will pretty much be a team player. Or will he? It's clear he will ultimately fight with the team in the end, but Mark Ruffalo confirms that he will definitely still be a reluctant addition, and cause a few problems along the way!

Ruffalo says Banner is a reluctant part of the team, and said his metamorphosis is as painful to the character as an addiction problem – even if he can sometimes be used for good.

“The rage is something that is like going on a binger — you wake up after a blackout and you did all this f—ed up shit. Oh God, what did I do? And so we were talking about it like that, actually. At the beginning of The Avengers, “[Banner] starts like he’s sober in a weird way. He’s started a whole new life when we find him, and it’s cool. Things don’t stay that way, of course."

I always wondered what it would feel like to transform into Hulk. This is a good description. Ruffle will own as Banner.
Greengo - 2/28/2012, 11:01 AM

Greengo - 2/28/2012, 11:03 AM

Cool. IDK, hopefully I'll like Ruffalo's Banner, I do like how the Hulk in the superbowl trailer was stronger or something. Still not sure about Banner. But oh well what ever.
Greengo - 2/28/2012, 11:08 AM
@tainted: very cool

Booo, they should have pick up Banner from the point where he left off with Norton. I don't think Mark Ruffalo is going to play a good Banner. I really hope he dosent have much screen time and we really get to see the Hulk most of the time. As in the Avengers animation. I would much rather see and hear the Hulk talking trash to other Avnegers then to see Banners struggling again with being the Hulk. Norton left off accepting it. Thats where they should pick up.
xfan320 - 2/28/2012, 11:10 AM
Omg! I love WETA! Hulk is looking real! I can't wait to see this movie on blu-ray! They better put a ton of "making of" videos on the disc. I want to see just how much of the performanc is Ruffalo in the end. Not to mention the fact Ferrigno is the voice. Color me curious ;)
MassExecutions - 2/28/2012, 11:11 AM
Calling it now, Hulk will be so awesome in Avengers, he'll get a solo movie again.

Oh, forgot about the TV series. They might fast track that and really throw their weight behind it.

Greengo - 2/28/2012, 11:24 AM
Not that its a big deal or anything
vtopa - 2/28/2012, 11:24 AM

comicbookjerk - 2/28/2012, 11:28 AM
I COMPARE IT TO SHIT! THE HULK LOOKS STUPID! FRICK RUFFALO!
Seejay - 2/28/2012, 11:31 AM
That was the one thing I liked in Ang Lee's version.

Bruce loosing control, and likes it.

Natetrix79 - 2/28/2012, 11:36 AM
His eye looks like that cause it's taken from a movie clip. Not all stills look good, next timeyouwatch a movie randomly pause & see the weird faces you catch the actors making.
Greengo - 2/28/2012, 11:46 AM
@natetrix that doesn't make sense he's cgi
Fogs - 2/28/2012, 11:52 AM
Funny, that's what I've always said about Norton's Banner.

Ang Lee's Banner seemed to have psychological problems, with all of those childhood issues and stuff.

Norton's seemed to have a health condition, a problem which he needs or tries to treat, what is much more relatable IMO.

Nice to hear that from Ruffalo.
marvel72 - 2/28/2012, 12:00 PM
i can't wait to see the hulk f*ck shit up in the avengers.
cerrone6 - 2/28/2012, 12:17 PM
@DoubleD I would love a great movie of Planet Hulk. I think thats a great Idea, only thing is it would have to have a great film chapter of why they sent him into space. Wow there are so any ways to go with hulk but i think we all agree that planet Hulk & World War HULK are tops! Only marvel knows which way they will go film wise....Secret Wars, Infinity Gauntlet,Civil War. So many good stories. Possibilities are endless.
EastcoastAvenger - 2/28/2012, 1:05 PM
I'm all for Loki getting his mitts on Abomination. Assembling his own team while the aliens keep our heroes busier than ever. That last fight between Hulk and Abomination was bad ass!
JerBear - 2/28/2012, 1:10 PM
@1980
Don't include The Dark Knight with Avatar as if to say TDK's numbers are untouchable. TDK's numbers are easily reachable. And The Avengers WILL be the highest grossing Marvel movie of all time, mark my words.
TrueRedBlue - 2/28/2012, 1:23 PM
I like it, Mark's awesome and I can't wait to seehim in the movie!
6of13 - 2/28/2012, 1:24 PM
I like the strong resemblence between Hulk and Ruffalo...so much more apparent than with Norton. I think Ruffalo will be great in the role.

IMO, one of the great things about this movie is that it does not flout itself as some pretentious, self-important effigy. The fact that it does the opposite makes it exciting. Sure, it won't fall into the category of "cinematic masterpiece", but many films which do are often monotanous. This movie will be pure adrenalin. In short, it is going to be awesome.
thewonderer - 2/28/2012, 1:35 PM
@Jer

Easily reachable my ass. Yes Avatar won't be surpassed, but stop hating on TDK
valeriesghost - 2/28/2012, 1:40 PM
God, cant wait to see the Hulk in action again. Def my favorite avenger
headlopper - 2/28/2012, 1:41 PM
Ruffalo's got this. He understands the character like Bixby did. No worries...
RunawaysHD - 2/28/2012, 1:48 PM
So nobody is gonna die in this film? I wonder how it ends. Maybe Loki switches sides, for a while?

It's coming quick!
Ranger14 - 2/28/2012, 2:01 PM
"I still think Ed Norton would have been wayyy better in this movie than Mark Ruffalo"

No thank you. Norton would have wanted to run everything, rewrite everything and cry if he didn't get his way and be the focal point. I agree with headlopper. Ruffalo will give us more of the Bixby style of Banner and that to this date is my favorite Banner.
GreyChaos13Zero - 2/28/2012, 2:12 PM
I like how Hulk is looking, like a beast?)
thetrojan - 2/28/2012, 2:12 PM
2 hours thirty minutes
MrReese - 2/28/2012, 2:27 PM
Norton > Ruffalo XD hope he does the Hulk justice.
Boogie138 - 2/28/2012, 3:24 PM
damn you ruffalo! damn you for slowly winning me over! stoopid ruffalo! hulk looks sweet
mgeoff88 - 2/28/2012, 3:42 PM
At the end of TIH, it almost seemed like he finally embraced being The Hulk.

I'm glad they're not sticking with that. That would have gone against Bruce Banner's character.
Gary8264 - 2/28/2012, 4:35 PM
Sad but I don't know how to post a pic on here. I started readin' comics in the mid 70's and the first Hulk Artist I remember is Sal Buscema. If you look up some of his art work..."The Incredible Hulk" and "The Defenders" you'll notice that this new Hulk looks alot like his. I think this will be the best Hulk to hit the silver screen.
Netman0007 - 2/28/2012, 5:15 PM
I so hope it's at least 2 hours and 30 min
LAWLZY96 - 2/28/2012, 6:40 PM
I hope Hulk can talk
peppy - 2/29/2012, 5:00 AM
Ruffalo is going to be the best banner we ever had , I just have a feeling .... A really good one .... It's going to be [frick]ing EPIC !!!!
boomshuka - 2/29/2012, 12:02 PM
The Hulk looks smaller, uglier and dumber than TIH, but etleast the cgi of his skin makes him look perhaps a little more realistic. Hulk is my fave though so I'm cautiously optimistic.
AUSSYACE - 3/3/2012, 2:32 AM
The HULK in that final scene of the new trailer where he growls is the worst CGI I have ever seen...

Kevin Feige comfirmed that Avengers Hulk will be the same size as 2008 Hulk:
