EXCLUSIVE: BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN Update; Plus WB's Plan To Best Marvel

EXCLUSIVE: BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN Update; Plus WB's Plan To Best Marvel

My source, has provided me with some new information regarding Zack Snyder’s untitled Superman/Batman film. Hit the jump to find out which actor is playing Lex Luthor, the extent of Ben Affleck's injury, and WB's plans to establish their own calling cards.

Let's deal with Joaquin Phoenix first. Two days ago, in Variety's article regarding Batman Vs. Superman being pushed back 10 months they reported that the main villain role, "is still in Joaquin Phoenix’s court." This is twice that Variety has mentioned Phoenix for the part, yet they haven't revealed who the main villain is. Well, my source, General Napier, has informed me that Phoenix is "very close" to taking the role, and that the main villain is Lex Luthor. So, put two and two together and you have Joaquin Phoenix as Lex Luthor.

Here's a small tidbit about the Man of Steel. General Napier tells me, Henry Cavill will be sporting a new haircut in Zack Snyder’s untitled Superman/Batman film. His Kryptonian locks will be getting a trim. The shorter 'do will resemble Superman's look in Alex Ross and Mark Waid's Kingdom Come, minus the grey hair. An image of Kingdom Come Superman is in the banner image above. Oh, and that hairdo includes Superman's trademark "S" curl, which was absent in the first film.

As for Ben Affleck's rumored rib injury, which was first reported by Batman News. Even though Ben was seen last night at the 20th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards walking around just fine, General Napier has heard that Ben Affleck suffered a musculature injury. Supposedly the injury isn't too severe. He's expected to be back at full-health sometime in April. At the moment, he supposedly can't perform certain movements for the fight sequences, and a stunt double will be used. My source wanted me to stress, Affleck's injury is NOT the reason for the film's delay, and even speculated that this information could be circulating Warner Bros. as a diversion from the behind-the-scenes issues.

The reason for the delay is multifaceted. While I'm not at liberty to discuss most of those issues at this time, I can tell you that one issue is budgetary. There's a concern regarding Wonder Woman's home, Paradise Island (aka Themyscira). Executives are debating whether to feature the island, which would require massive VFX, or merely referencing it.

Last week, of Latino Review reported that "Batman vs Superman and Justice League are going to be shot back-to-back." He also said, Batman vs Superman would end with an "insane cliffhanger/teaser that leads right into Justice League. I'm told by General Napier that shooting Batman Vs. Superman and Justice League back-to-back is being considered but no official decision has been made at this time. But, I was also contacted by another source, who requested anonymity, and he told me Justice League is a go, and will be released one year after Batman Vs. Superman.

As for the cliffhanger rumor? General Napier, tells me that's very much true. Cliffhangers, will actually be one key component in WB's master plan to dethrone Marvel Studios. WB realizes that Marvel films are famous for their mid- and post-credits scenes, and have no interest in copying from Marvel's playbook. WB's plan, is to end each of their films with a cliffhanger, setting up the next film in their cinematic universe. WB also wants to do short films for their lesser known characters. These short films would be played at the end of each film. That's a pretty interesting way of taking on Marvel's trademark post-credits scenes.

I'm told by my source, that the marketing campaign for Batman Vs. Superman will still be starting up this year. Photo releases can be expected in the coming months and a viral site will be launched with a "choose your side" angle. That's about it. In the near future, be on the lookout for official casting news pertaining Joaquin Phoenix, Jason Momoa (despite his denials) and Josh Holloway.

Snyder will direct the film from a screenplay written by David S. Goyer, from a story co-created by Goyer and Snyder. Zack Snyder’s Superman/Batman film stars Henry Cavill, reprising his role as Superman/Clark Kent, and Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne. The film will also reunite “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane, and also stars Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. Zack Snyder’s untitled Superman/Batman film which will now be arriving in theaters May 6, 2016.

I'm glad he's getting a haircut, though. I couldn't stand his hair in MOS
GuardianAngel - 1/19/2014, 5:59 PM
DC has got to do something about a too many bugs in their department.
SmellofDuty - 1/19/2014, 6:01 PM
DC's plans to have short films and cliffhangers are pretty intriguing. And I was mad yesterday but today I guess I'm just like everybody else and hope that this means it'll be great!
GuardianAngel - 1/19/2014, 6:02 PM
Though, I'm liking the cliffhanger idea. They should start making their movies more like chapters or like TV series. Keep people coming back. I only wish they started planning before Man of Steel. Could've made the movie better.
TayDee - 1/19/2014, 6:02 PM
Expected cliffhangers? Sounds great WB.
GuardianAngel - 1/19/2014, 6:03 PM

How about making a film that everyone, not just the fan enjoy.
DraculaX - 1/19/2014, 6:04 PM
@GuardianAngel As A DC fan, I say you are insane for suggesting that.

Each film ending in a cliffhanger setting up the next film? That reminds me of what the Batman TV series did with each Batman villian.
JDUKE25 - 1/19/2014, 6:05 PM
Glad to hear about the haircut. Definitely needs one.

I really do hope Phoenix takes on the role of Lex. He'd be incredible.

I like the idea for having cliffhangers at the end of movies. Leaves you wanting more.
Zordan - 1/19/2014, 6:05 PM
Good news, so lex, doomsday and holloway? Maybe steve trevor?
Parryk - 1/19/2014, 6:05 PM
I love the cliffhanger idea. The Joker card at the end of Batman Begins was insane and had everyone leaving the theatre clamouring for TDK.
JediSuperGuy83 - 1/19/2014, 6:05 PM
Awesome Im stoked DC Fan For Life and GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!
whoa123 - 1/19/2014, 6:05 PM
I like what I'm reading. Good work nail!
DraculaX - 1/19/2014, 6:06 PM
Quick, someone do a photoshop of Henry with the Kingdom Come haircut
niceguyeddie - 1/19/2014, 6:07 PM
I hope alot of that is true but I'm a bit skeptical. For the record (because I honestly don't know) how many of your scoops have panned out so far? I do hope you're proven right and a certain arrogant person is proven to not know everything.
RichardHedski - 1/19/2014, 6:07 PM
Man, they are desperate. If they would have just made a direct sequel to Superman Returns and had Brandon Routh's Superman team-up with Bale's Batman then WB/DC wouldn't be in this predicament. BatFleck? Seriously? What are they smoking because pass that shit my way, dawg!
MrCBM56 - 1/19/2014, 6:09 PM
Ok if true, WOW!!!!!!!!!

If not, ;(

Also, Nail, how reliable is this source?
BatmanFTW - 1/19/2014, 6:09 PM

God. Please not the curl.
Zordan - 1/19/2014, 6:12 PM
Isnt Joakin like 10cm shorter than Henry?
BatmanFTW - 1/19/2014, 6:12 PM
Also, the fact that Themyscira is thrown in there and is so obscure, makes me think there's some truth to it...
GuardianAngel - 1/19/2014, 6:12 PM

I'd love to see a BATMAN/SUPERMAN film as much as you, as long as it's done right. This seems like it's being rushed, hopefully this delay means their taking a step back to get it right, but I'd rather they cancel it and try again in 5 years after thoroughly planning it out, rather than just release a cash grab from a mediocre writer and a director who's best films are direct adaptions.

Plus that's just my opinion. I'm just trying to be reasonable, unlike everyone else in these comment sections who only care whether or not the Batsuit is grey. Having a different viewpoint doesn't make someone insane.

Batman vs. Superman should just have Lex Luthor and Metallo as the villains. Lex uses Kryptonite that the World Engine created and he creates Metallo. Lex should also have his power suit that way its Batman & Superman vs. Lex & Metallo. The cliffhanger should deal with Darkseid. He would be the reason the Justice League was formed. I have an idea for a rebooted Green Lantern without giving him another solo origin film. In Justice League have Darkseid be the guy who kills Abin Sur. When Abin Sur lands on Earth he actually meets Superman and he tells Superman of the coming danger of Darkseid. The ring then goes to Hal with Superman accompanying it that way Superman recruits him right on the spot. You just rebooted Green Lantern and you made it fit within the context of the movie
TheActionAce - 1/19/2014, 6:13 PM

Cliffhanger ending leading to Justice League = Darkseid
Zordan - 1/19/2014, 6:13 PM
JoeMomma29 - 1/19/2014, 6:13 PM
That's it I am going silent till we get something concrete or freaking DC/WB makes official announcements........I am so done!!!!!!

GuardianAngel - 1/19/2014, 6:14 PM

And change mediocre to terrible. David Goyer is a TERRIBLE writer
Bl00dwerK - 1/19/2014, 6:14 PM
The "Best" DC can hope to do is keep up...
Indy - 1/19/2014, 6:14 PM
I like the hair cut he had in MOS so will see if they do change it. Hope Phoenix is lex not sure about rest have to wait and see.
TheLetter10 - 1/19/2014, 6:14 PM
Wait, you spill some news from your source then you say you're not at liberty to say other news? I smell bullshit.
TheProfessional - 1/19/2014, 6:14 PM
I'm kind of thinking leaving each film on a cliffhanger could make the ending feel incomplete.
But only time will tell, hopefully the extra ten month wait will pay off.
Kurne - 1/19/2014, 6:15 PM
Cliffhangers aren't copying Marvel's post-credit scene formula? Err, the cliffhangers are what the post-credits scenes are for :P
TheNerdArk - 1/19/2014, 6:16 PM
Sounds good to me
McNyagano - 1/19/2014, 6:17 PM
I'm liking what I hear. Seems pretty cool but the whole 'short films' at the end of each film is a bit questionable. And sometimes cliff-hangers are not always a good thing if not done right but I like it. Let's hope they can pull it off. Just don't let Goyer and Snyder near the Justice League movie. Let a new director and writer take over from there.
MrCBM56 - 1/19/2014, 6:17 PM

None of Marvel post credit scenes are cliffhangers. At least not to me.
TheActionAce - 1/19/2014, 6:17 PM
and meh on the haircut
the haircut was ok in MoS but he
can change especially if the 'sequel' is some time after
like a year or a few months after MoS
