This month marks 57 years since Black Panther's comic book debut, and Marvel Games has now announced plans (via GameFragger.com) for a video game revolving around T'Challa.

The EA-owned Cliffhanger Games, a new triple-A development studio based in Seattle, is officially working on an original, third-person, single-player Black Panther game, and a brief announcement teaser was released earlier today to coincide with the news.

It's clearly very, very early days for the project, but the plan is for the company to "build an expansive and reactive world that empowers players to experience what it is like to take on the mantle of Wakanda's protector, the Black Panther." Needless to say, the prospect of exploring Wakanda as T'Challa is incredibly exciting, especially if it's going to feature an open-world map similar to Far Cry, for example.

Cliffhanger is led by Kevin Stephens, while the team working on Black Panther is made up of those who have previously contributed to franchises such as Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Halo Infinite, God of War, and Call of Duty.

"We’re dedicated to delivering fans a definitive and authentic Black Panther experience, giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game," Stephens says. "Wakanda is a rich Super Hero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do."

He'd add that the plan is for Cliffhanger and Marvel Games "to ensure that we craft every aspect of Wakanda, its technology, its heroes, and our own original story with the attention to detail and authenticity that the world of Black Panther deserves."

You can hear more from Stephens on the team's Black Panther plans by clicking here.

This sounds incredible, and we can only hope Cliffhanger is able to do T'Challa justice. It's probably going to be a good couple of years before we even get a first look at the game and no doubt a couple more beyond that before we actually get to play it.

As always, keep checking GameFragger.com for the latest updates on Black Panther

'Tis a licensed game so it's gonna be crap.

@CoHost - Are there no good licensed games in existence?...

@CoHost - Gotg game was great, sadly flopped. Aren't the Arkham Batman, Injustice, and Marvel Spiderman games licensed? They are good too.

@mastakilla39 - Did it flop?? That game blew my expectations away. It was the first single-player game I had played in years. The way they weaved in the soundtrack was amazing.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 7/10/2023, 5:06 PM
@Tonic24k - Yeah it flopped. Square Enix (distributor) sold off Eidos Montreal (game maker) to another company for that reason. Both Marvels Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy flopped pretty hard. Gotg had great reviews from critics and everyone who played the game but all the drama that Marvels Avengers created made gamers lose trust in the brand and studio.

Tonic24k - 7/10/2023, 5:26 PM
@mastakilla39 - An absolute shame. And yeah, you're right about Avengers. I noticed it soured people; when GotG was announced people just dismissed it not realizing the distributor has nothing to do with the production and development. Avengers SHOULD have been great and SHOULD still be going strong with new content. But they dropped the ball and earned their L. GotG definitely didn't deserve an L.

DeadClunge
DeadClunge - 7/10/2023, 6:46 PM
@LongMayHeReign - @Tonic24k its because its EA.

If it was Rocksteady or insomniac we'd all be excited. EA half arse nearly everything and most of they publish are loot box rush jobs due to EA putting the studios under a lot of pressure 😭

@GunnISaClunge - the games they publish**
LongMayHeReign

@GunnISaClunge - There are no loot boxes in the Jedi Fallen Order or Jedi Survivor games. And while yes Survivor suffers from performance issues evidence points to that being more a Disney issue as they are seemingly mandating a new Star Wars game every 6 months.

https://insider-gaming.com/star-wars-every-6-months/

Considering some of the games on the list in this article are being restarted I think it's obvious that Disney would have pressured EA to release Survivor before it's finished being polished.

Regardless of all that Survivor was a great game with a great story so I'm willing to give EA a chance. Would I be more confident with a PS studio at the helm? Yes but I'm not gonna write this off like some people here are doing.

Also Marvel Games would never have a studio owned by WB work on one of their games, so that alongside the fact that they are still working on Suicide Squad Kills the JL would immediately take Rocksteady out of the running.

@LongMayHeReign - haven't played the star wars ones yet. Was actually about to start fallen order today as I just completed metroid prime remastered. Maybe this game may restore my faith in EA, so far I only trust the criterion NFS games as that developer use to make Burnout 🤔
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 7/18/2023, 7:59 PM
@GunnISaClunge - I think it will, both games have fantastic stories (especially Survivor), esily the best stories to come out of Star Wars since Disney bought them (excluding animation because I haven't seen those).

Be prepared tho, they play like Souls games in that they can get difficult and enemies respawn in the area when you die or reload. So if you don't like those games you may not like these, but again it's worth it for the story and characters alone. So whenever you get around to it hope you enjoy.👍

If it's a mix between Shadow of Mordor and God of War, this can turn out to be a really good game.

Wonder if it'll affect that Captain America & Black Panther game though

Still Can't believe Marvel terrible decision to cancel T'Challa's Black Panther in the MCU

The was the start of the downfall of Feige and the MCU

@WakandaTech - Was he cancelled? I thought we were just given a new kid T'challa in BP2? Kid versions work....just look at baby Yoda lol

Disney just has to follow the trend with kid Tchalla
AmazingFILMporg
AmazingFILMporg - 7/10/2023, 4:26 PM
@mastakilla39 -

Kid Tchalla can work. If after secret wars we get some type of time jump or everything gets resent and we get a teenage Tchalla I'll be more than happy 🥲
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 7/10/2023, 4:28 PM
@WakandaTech - Canceled? The actor died...they didn't cancel him. They left Boseman with the legacy of the original T'Challa and are developing a new T'Challa.

Also, "downfall"?? Lol. There's been no downfall. A few projects didn't meet everyone's expectations. That's the extent of it. Marvel Studios is still dominating and leads all CBM franchises.
TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 7/10/2023, 4:32 PM
@WakandaTech - But for the sake of the story it works. I personally think that these recast (Rhodey, Banner etc.) are an eye sore. This is more natural. And we will have a new T'challa by the time the third film gets here.
SethBullock
SethBullock - 7/10/2023, 4:33 PM
@AmazingFILMporg - Kid Tchalla once he is an adult in the future could use the Avengers time travel machine to travel to the present for some random reason like warning about a future threat, like Trunks did on DBZ.
StSteven
StSteven - 7/10/2023, 4:40 PM
@AmazingFILMporg - Totally. I mean, how old is T'Challa Jr. now? Like 7 or 8? If I recall correctly they didn't ever explicitly say his name in "WF" so they have som wiggle room there. Plus, even if they don't do a time jump after "SW", "SW" won't be coming out until 2026 (and that's assuming that Marvel doesn't push it back further), AND don't forget that there are rumors that "SW" will be split into 2 movies like "IW/EG", which means that the earliest that we would see "SW Part 2" would be 2027. And then by the time they actually got around to "BP3" would likely be a couple of years from that. So by then you can have an experienced and seasoned Shuri BP who wants to become queen and trains her nephew, who is like 15 or 16 to be the next BP. It could work just fine, especially if Marvel lets BP cool down for a while after "SW", where she'll most likely play a considerable role. Don't see what the problem is here.

I’m still waiting on my open world Marvel game. One where you can be any marvel hero or make your own and do missions and fight crime or maybe even be a villain. But make it like GTA.
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 7/10/2023, 4:38 PM
@slickrickdesigns - Hell yeah. I really thought Avengers was going to be that game. Sadly, it didn't deliver. I did enjoy it a little in the beginning. And I came back when they released the Black Panther DLC. (Wakanda looked amazing.) But I just couldn't bring myself to play it anymore at that point.

But yeah, a TRUE open world game needs to happen. And we need a studio that knows how to develop it.
Fares
Fares - 7/10/2023, 4:22 PM
We really need to stop announcing games before being far enough into development to show some proper gameplay.
Origame
Origame - 7/10/2023, 4:32 PM
Ok, this is wrong. Nowhere in the announcement did it say we were playing as tchalla. In fact, this ea game was already talked about, and it's revolving around a new black panther created by the player after tchalla dies.

But the fact you assumed we were playing as tchalla just goes to show how tchalla IS black panther. And how stupid marvel is for killing off tchalla in the mcu.
ShimmyShimmyYA

Keep in mind that while the part of you not playing as tchalla isn't confirmed, but the insider got everything else right about it.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 7/10/2023, 10:35 PM
@Origame - ahh eh I think it could be fine or bad but it mostly only works with BP or GL since those are titles even if there are characters most famous for holding the title
Origame
Origame - 7/11/2023, 5:53 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - but tchalla has been the only one to hold the mantle for decades.

Not only that but we're running out of projects including tchalla. The comics have pushed him out of the role. This game is killing him off. And we still have that black panther/captain america game where it's in ww2 so not tchalla.

This is what I've been saying as a problem with killing off tchalla in the movies. He's gonna effectively be dead everywhere else.

I'm not too sure how "authentic" a version you can make of a fictional country who's boundaries and location and details have changed many times in the comics over the years.
