Captain America film update

After unveiling some dazzling new Iron Man 2 footage at Comic-Con Saturday afternoon, Marvel Studios exec Kevin Feige took time to update us on another high-profile project in his company’s ambitious pipeline, The First Avenger: Captain America.
On the film’s storyline and how it might be shaped to appeal to an international audience:

“Captain America is really the story of Steve Rogers, like Peter Parker, like Bruce Banner, like Tony Stark. By the way, Tony Stark is about as jingoistic a guy there is. He’s always talking about America, what’s right for America, making weapons to go to war with the rest of the world with and [Iron Man] did extremely well overseas because his story was engaging. This movie is Steve Rogers’ origin story, and I think it is our burden to make Steve Rogers as appealing as any of our other characters ... he’s not just the perfect boy scout who follows order every time. He has ideals he wants to live up to.”

On the decision to set the movie in World War II and the possibility of an appearance by the 1940s-era supergroup the Invaders:

“Also, setting it in World War II — the Marvel version of World War II — I think is gonna open it up in another big way ... What’s funny is it will actually end up being, I think, our most diverse and our most international film, in terms of the content of the movies itself. It takes place overseas much more than any of our other films do. In terms of the cast, there’s a group that Steve works with that will have an opportunity for many more international actors than any of our other films.”

On potential villains:

“We are gonna explore those aspects of World War II that made Cap special: the Super Soldier program, Red Skull, Hydra, all of those things that exist in the Marvel version of it. As you know if you read the comic books, the origin of Captain America is really the origin of the Marvel universe ... it’s about that time in history when the idea of the superhero began to emerge.”

Feige, who was wearing a Marvel hat in case anyone forgot where he works, indicated that they're “about halfway though” developing the script, with a target date of June 2010 for the start of production. As far as casting is concerned, don’t expect any major announcements until October, when director Joe Johnston (The Wolf Man, Hidalgo) joins the production full-time.

Can a period-based comic book flick succeed in a genre dominated by glossy, futuristic films? And is The First Avenger: Captain America the latest example of franchise-obsessed Hollywood's disturbing trend towards comic book flicks with annoyingly cumbersome titles? We'll just have to wait and see, true believers.

Nice! This means the movie is progressing and we should know who is cast as Captain America soon.

joshw24 - 7/27/2009, 12:53 PM
this movie will suck - only because of the people who keep screaming Ackles etc. every time this topic comes up.

you've ruined this film for me and it isn't even written yet. I hope they cast that fcuk with the bowtie from Gossip Girl as Cap.

That'll teach you all - teach you all good.
Keven - 7/27/2009, 12:56 PM
This will be a good movie that is all i'm saying.

Ozymandias - 7/27/2009, 1:00 PM
ackles is a very good choice but agree with KEVIN this movie sucks it doesn't have big C.G.I. robots in it! ha ha.
gambitfreak - 7/27/2009, 1:00 PM
so the whole movie will be in the 1940's?
thats setting it up for a part 2 already...

I guess you could end it with him falling to the antartic or something.
vonstallin - 7/27/2009, 1:05 PM
To properly set up the Avengers franchise and do Caps story justice, it has to be set in the WW II....on whether or not in can compete with the glossy fututistic stuff?!....I think it can. They're gonna get the azzes in the seats just on the strength alone of it being another comic book character and Captain America for that fact.....its gonna be up to them to deliver a top quality product to have that box office staying power.
xmentheeight - 7/27/2009, 1:05 PM
Super Natural is awesome but that dude is too short.
kylemf88 - 7/27/2009, 1:24 PM
kylemf88: Jensen Ackles is 6"1 - Captain America is 6"2
Thats an INCH difference!!!
joshw24 - 7/27/2009, 1:26 PM
I'm excited to hear more about this movie...

On another note...ShakeBake why do you have to say "see ya then shake bake" after every post? It is your name. We already know that. Kind of annoying.
Bamf7 - 7/27/2009, 1:29 PM
The guy who played Kirk's dad in the new Star Trek movie would do good. He's got a square jaw, and he's bulky enough, as for hair and eyes, just dye the hair and give him the same contacts as Chris PIne had. There ya go.

No Hackles of Worth-less-ington.
WulfComicFan - 7/27/2009, 1:43 PM
WulfComicFan: you dont really keep up to date with the news do you, lol? The guy who played Kirk's dad is playing THOR!!!

oh what a frigen surprise. a captain america story followed by all kinds of pictures of jensen ackles and jason lewis (although his pictures are comspicuously absent). give it a rest guys :)

WWII is the only way to do a captain america movie. sets it up perfectly for the avengers.

freddie prinze jr for cap :) sorry guys, couldnt resist.
superdog - 7/27/2009, 2:07 PM

GUNSMITH - 7/27/2009, 2:40 PM
It's nice that MARVEL is finally making these movies the way they should be made. I think Iron Man started the "Win" streak for them.
BmanHall - 7/27/2009, 2:43 PM
Now this is very interesting. I have a situation here in which I can get myself into trouble by giving my opinion or just read the article , stress about it quietly, and get on with my day. I think at this point I will choose the latter and I will merely point out the possible meaning of these two statements:

"This movie is Steve Rogers’ origin story, and I think it is our burden to make Steve Rogers as appealing as any of our other characters ."

and

"it will actually end up being, I think, our most diverse and our most international film"

Does anyone else here see what he might be trying to say here in the roundabout?

A little something about the unpopularity of Patriotism perhaps? Or the prominece of anti American sentiment in the world? hmmmm?

I truly truly hope that the personal politics of the people involved don't ruin this movie.
DarthMulder - 7/27/2009, 2:48 PM
Keven @ ive never watched that lady program gossip girl so not sure what you mean!!

DarthMulder@ i think there just trying to make it apeal worldwide....most people here in england wouldnt just go to a film cus its called captain america....sounds gi-jo'sh

Ackles for cap

And this for GUNSMITH.....

:P
teabag - 7/27/2009, 2:48 PM
gross

on topic-this is good, the invaders rock!
NightAvenger4 - 7/27/2009, 2:52 PM
Superdog: ahh...no post is complete without humiliating Jason Lewis - i can sleep well tonight, lol!

DarthMulder: while i agree the word "burden" was an odd choice of words, him saying that it will be the "most diverse and our most international film" just means (in my opinion) that it will be set probably in Europe (as that is where Cap fought in WWII after all) and will thereby have foriegn characters and will hopefully feature other heroes like the UK's Spitfire and Union Jack!
joshw24 - 7/27/2009, 2:53 PM
Yes! I think it would be cool to have the Invaders. They just have to cast Namor carefully, since chances are he could pop up in other movies. And how cool would it be to have Bucky, and later on in the next Cap movie have him as the Winter Soldier? This could be great news.

@ ShakeBake just thought I'd ask...haha. No offense. And yes, that's a great idea for the Red Skull, he's a great actor.
Bamf7 - 7/27/2009, 2:56 PM
Why the hell are they setting the whole thing in ww2? I heard half of it was going to be in ww2 then the other half of the film would be in present day. I hope some of it takes place in the present because this film wont be that good to me.
Ozymandias - 7/27/2009, 2:59 PM
Bamf7: I would also love to see The Winter Soldier in a future Captain America movie!!

ozy@ if either one of them gets cast we'll never hear the end of it. i pray to god they pick someone else
superdog - 7/27/2009, 7:23 PM
@ Keven: bowtie guy from Gossip Girl? I have no idea who that is, and if anyone here does, just leave lol, but seriously....yeah, just leave.
bleclercq - 7/27/2009, 7:50 PM
Lets cast Ed Norton, or Robert Downey JR as Captain America.... Oh wait nevermind.

The movie would be complete crap and piss off every real comic fan if it wasn't WW2.

Jensen for Cap
stupify_me - 7/27/2009, 9:11 PM
I'm looking forward to this. This could be either really good, or really Transformers II...

A semi-serious time period piece with cameos from the Invaders and some historical figures (MacArthur, Roosevelt, etc.) and ending with modern-day Avengers finding him floating in frigid waters covered in his original shield.
gtrman - 7/27/2009, 9:58 PM
I wouldn't hate Jensen Ackles in the role but Mark Valley would fare much better as Captain America. Peter Stormare for Red Skull!!
Geekautomaton - 7/27/2009, 10:17 PM
GEEK @ Anyone would be better than TACKLES the i love myself wonder!!! : D

MARK VALLEY would be cool!

But i really think the guy with the best chance if they goes A-LIST is = SAM WORTHINGTON, now he ain't got GL!!!! ; )

They wont use a box office flop like ACKLES lmao! ; D
LEEE777 - 7/28/2009, 2:10 AM
LEEE RDJ was hardly box office material but look how that turned out!! :)
teabag - 7/28/2009, 2:26 AM
You for real???? RDJ is a real actor way before IRON MAN he had plenty of great movies out!!! tACKLES is a z-grade (With Z-grade movies) actor when it comes to a big character like CAP, only place he belongs really is TV!

He maybe could pull off HAWKEYE! That's it!
LEEE777 - 7/28/2009, 6:05 AM
LOLOL :P

Good one Josh, never thought you'd actually put it up :P
Shaman - 7/28/2009, 6:43 AM
This is sounding promising! Cap's movie SHOULD be set in World War II. If we're setting things up to do the Avengers right, Cap SHOULD be seen fighting in World War II. After all, that's a key part of his origin, and a key part of his character. He disappears near the end of the war, to be found and thawed out years later by the Avengers. This shows that they're treating this important part of Marvel history with the respect it deserves.

As for who should play Cap, I'm holding out for Aaron Eckhart. He LOOKS like Steve Rogers, and he's already proven he can play a good comic book character.
comicb00kguy - 7/28/2009, 7:13 AM
LEEE what movie before Iron man in the last ten yrs has RDJ bin a box office smash in?? :)
teabag - 7/28/2009, 7:29 AM
Can't believe it, but I agree with Teabag. If we are talking about box offices than there are a few actors who have been miscast yet got great responses. Jensen was my first choice, but I've changed my mind.

My new first choice is the guy who wrote Kate and Leopold and PS I Love You. That's right ladies and gentlemen Captain America should be played by Steve Rogers.
stupify_me - 7/28/2009, 7:54 AM
so many years from this movie. not looking forward to years and years of a debate.
TurdFergunson - 7/28/2009, 7:58 AM
Jensen Ackles for Captain America!!! 'Nuff said!
joshw24 - 7/28/2009, 8:38 AM
AMERICA!!! - [frick] YEAH!!!
HAQ - 7/28/2009, 8:41 AM
I'm sure I'll catch hell for this, but why aren't we asking an obvious question when asking who should play Cap...Who can share/lead the screen in the evenutual Avengers movie with Robert Downey Jr.? I'm sure Ackles is a decent actor and all, same for that other guy Lewis (i don't really know either of them) but does he bring the acting strength to be Ironman's equal/leader? If they picked actors based on a photo or look alone then we'd had ended up with Triple H as Thor and John Cena as Cap. (btw when I saw someone recommend those two I cringed)
Layperson - 7/28/2009, 8:47 AM
Everybody: Could we all please STOP talking about this particular character´s casting?? It has gone too far-repetitive.
SirJediFrank - 7/28/2009, 11:21 AM
Aaron Eckhart has the acting chops to be the man, the gravitas to command Tony Stark, and let us not forget... the chin.

Wrigs - 7/28/2009, 1:17 PM
No eckhart...too old to be a twenty something cap...since they are doing an origin story :)
teabag - 7/28/2009, 2:22 PM
they couldnt make him look 20 but they could make him look younger than he is for the role
fotc - 7/28/2009, 4:57 PM
@ layperson. Yes, they should have someone with enough screen presence to play Cap that can stand up against the actors playing Thor and Iron Man.

This should be a Grade A actor. If this movie is not done carefully, we are going to be pissed off for the rest of our lives. I don't think I as a comic fan could ever recover from this. This is one of the big chances to have Captain America on the big screen. I don't think that Marvel will be able to support this movie again until a few more ages to come. Please creators...don't botch this up.
Scorpioxfactor - 8/2/2009, 1:30 AM
shia labeouff as CAP !!!!!!! ....... no im jokin, Ackles FTW !!!!
