Captain America Gets a Director

The director of the coming Wolfman movie, Joe Johnston, has signed on to helm The First Avenger: Captain America.
Johnston's other movies are Jumanji, The Rocketeer, October Sky, Jurassic Park III, and Hidalgo. Universal's remake of The Wolfman, will arrive in theaters April 3rd, 2009. He's also done some impressive SFX work on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Return of the Jedi.

Script writers are the next hire for the Captain America project, which is due for a May 2011 release.

Created by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon in 1941, Captain America was a wartime symbol for Timely Comics, with his alter-ego Steve Rogers having been transformed into a patriotic superhero after being subjected to the Super Soldier serum.

The character's popularity declined after the second world war but revived during the Silver Age of Marvel Comics in the 60s, as he became the leader of the Avengers superhero team.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige said Johnston was the ideal choice to take on the World War II project.

"This is a guy who designed the vehicles for Star Wars, who storyboarded the convoy action sequence for Raiders of the Lost Ark," he said.

"From Rocketeer to October Sky to The Wolfman, you can look at pieces of his movies and see how they lead to this one."

First Avenger: Captain America will be set during the second world war ahead of the present day-set Avengers film, expected to feature Captain America, Thor and Iron Man, among others.

OK, ....But remember,
Listen not to what they say, but watch what they do.

i am very nervous about who they will pic for the actor. cap is the peak of human fitness. he is as fit and as strong as a human can possibly be. and hopefully he can act. as for this director? good choice. he made made jp3. means he can work with effects. just get a good script going.hopefully cap is mentioned in wolverine during the ww2 scenes. then they can cross over the franchises that much more.

Interesting, but a good choice. So far so good...

yeah he helmed jp3..that was tripe! but im not a huge cap fan so im not too bothered either way, would be nice to see a good movie tho. theyl have to have a more ultimate cap approach because if they take this character too seriously its gonna enter cheese territory

If this movie takes place in WW2, don't expect to see too many special effects. I'm guessing it will be like Saving Private Ryan but Tom Hanks has special skills and super powers... lol I don't care, I just hope is entertaining...

Like i said before, to me, Jensen Ackles could pull it off hands down!

And as for the mention of Cap in Wolverine, don't hold your breath. Marvel and Fox are two way different entities. If Fox can't make a penny off the Cap movie, they'll never mention him in Wolvie. Shit look at what they did with the Watchmen issue... Fascism!

Shaman-

I like Ackles too, but he's gonna need a good year in the gym to be big enough, and he should be about 3" taller.

Ackles is my pic for the role, i really think after seeing him in Dark Angel and supernatural, he could pull it off easily.
As for the ww2 setting, id rarther the story be told in a band of brothers/saving pvt ryan way rarther than over the top Indiana Jones method.
If they stick to the ultimates, and throw in classic cap story arcs, this has the potential to be a great film.

That's very true talontd! He is short but that could be fixed with angles, thicker boot sols... they have options. And as for his muscular mass, you are also corract however if we examine his structure very closely, he's very wide shoulder lenght-wise and has great back muscles which means that all he would need to do is just go to the gym intensly for a few months with the right trainer and voila!!! No need for air brush or CGI. His morphology is perfect for the part.

Bull's eye InSaneMilesy, dead on!!!
