Those who have been following my 100 Days of Superheroes will know what this is all about. I’m currently reviewing and ranking 100 superhero films over the course of a year, building up to the release of Amazing Spider-Man, Dark Knight Rises, Avengers, and Man of Steel.

Here is how it works. The ranking is determined by two factors the average audience ranking (by poll votes) combined with my own score for the films in the reviews I wrote. These rankings will be posted every ten reviews so be sure to vote. As more votes and movies are added to the ranking, films will slide up and down on the scale.

You can also go back and vote on previous films already ranked as it could change their score in future updates. So if you don't like the ranking GO VOTE!!! Just click the 100 Days Logo to the Fansite to both vote and read the reviews. So let's get started.

NEWLY RANKED:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:

Now here is one film where it seems my readers were of a completely different opinion than me. It had an overwhelming reader score of 75.24% compared to my 20%. Perhaps I missed the nostalgia, having never watched it as a kid, or maybe I just didn’t get it’s tongue and cheek nature. Either way Ninja Turtles is one to love or hate, some may find it fun and other may think it just irritating.

Ranked At: 47.63%

Superman and the Mole Men:

Yes I know this isn’t exactly a Newly Ranked film (as it was the first film reviewed) but because the poll didn’t exist at the time of the last ranking I decided to mention it. Reader votes came in at a mediocre 46.75%, bringing it close to my initial score. It’s the first attempt at a feature length theatrical superhero film but its not much better than the early serials.

Ranked At: 43. 75%

Howard the Duck:

Considering the fact that it has become a critic whipping boy and put up against Batman and Robin as a contender for worst Superhero film, the reality is that Howard the Duck is not as bad as it is made out to be. By no means is it good though. With a reader score of 40.3%, it’s hardily anything to brag about but by no means the worst of the lot.

Ranked At: 40.15%

THE TOP TEN COUNTDOWN!!!:

#10- Danger Diabolik

It barely manages to cling to its place in the Top Ten, especially having dropped 3.75% in the polls. Danger Diabolik is a mixed bag. On one hand it’s a fun spy-superhero hybrid flick but lackluster characters and mediocre action drags it down a notch.

Ranked At: 50%

#9- Toxic Avenger

This 80’s exploitation film is hardily what anyone could call “good” in the traditional sense. But readers agree with a 52% score that it has it’s positive qualities in the pure absurdity of the circumstances and character. Just don’t expect any real drama or characters.

Ranked At: 56%

#8- Hero At Large

Hero at Large my have dropped from position #5 but it’s ratings in the polls went up over 6%. The film lacks in action but makes up for it with quality scripting and a likable lead.

Ranked At; 58.12%

#7- Swamp Thing

It’s effects are horrific but the story steps up the game to save the film with a surprisingly emotional script. Falling from the #3 spot, but it really saw almost no change in the polls.

Ranked At: 61.25%

#6- Superman 2

It was knocked down from it’s spot at number 2 but the Superman sequel continues strong, seeing a very small rise in the polls. Superman 2 may not have the emotional depth and story complexity of the original but it’s still a solid sequel and fun action flick.

Ranked At: 68.7%

#5- Darkman

This newcomer started out strong. Readers voted it into #5 spot with an average of 78.75%. Darkman is a slick and well crafted action film with an original and interesting central premise. The screen presence of Liam Neesan doesn’t hurt either.

Ranked At: 74.43%

#4- Batman (1989)

No surprise here that Tim Burton’s Academy Award winning Batman film made it into the top ten. Voted at a strong 80.48% reader score, this film is strongest in it’s visual arts and as a darker adaption of the character. Well developed character though is not its strong suite.

Ranked At: 75.25%

#3- Superman: The Movie

Still going strong. Richard Donner’s Superman may have lost the top spot but it still stayed in the top 3 superhero films. There wasn’t much change for it in the polls. Donner manages to take the typically clumsily handled character of Superman and craft a compelling story around him that remained true to the character.

Ranked At: 85.13%

#2- Robocop

This original scify superhero film snatched up the second position with ease. Readers seem to agree that this film is the prime example of a rated R superhero film done right. An average score of 89.4%. Gory, emotional, action packed, and thought provoking, Robocop is one badass motherf**ker of a film.

Ranked At: 89.6%

#1- The Crow

And the taker of the top spot is none other than the Crow. Readers voted it with an overwhelming reader score of 93.6%. This will make the Crow the new film to beat. With a dark foreboding story, themes of death, and a gorgeous art house style, The Crow remains one of the greatest superhero films of all time and monument to a lost talent and traditional filmmaking.

Ranked At: 96%

BOTTOM THREE- WORST OF THE WORST:

#3- The Punisher AND Superman 4

These two stinkers were neck and neck for the honor of the bottom 3. The punisher got away with a reader score of 40% where Superman 4 suffered a 30% reader score. Both are lackluster in action and plot. Superman may have its original cast going for it but that’s not enough to save it. The Punisher meanwhile is just lucky to have been made.

Both Ranked At: 30% (go vote so we can break this tie!)

#2- Superman 3

It still isn’t doing too hot. Last Ranking it was dirt last though. Here it clings to the proud honor of second worst movie. Superman 3 is a disaster of a film with lackluster action, near no plot, and worst of all….it’s boring.

Ranked At: 28.15%

#1- Supergirl

And the worst of the lot is given to Supergirl. Readers didn’t find it quite as bad as I did with an average score of 42%. But the end reality is that Supergirl has no acting talent, little action, and worst of all no plot. One stupid movie that is an insult to everyone involved.

Ranked At: 26%

I love that The Crow is getting some love because that really us a fantastic movie. The character of Eric Draven is a very tortured character but he does what he has to so that he can avenge his fiance and his own deaths. Plus the performance by Brandon Lee is great as well definitely one of the best in CBMs. I think I agree with this list for great nostalgic films.
