This weekend will see the debut of Blade among some other supernatural heroes teaming up with Spider-Man to take on Dracula in the Ultimate Spider-Man Halloween special. The hour-long episode puts Terry Crews as the voice of vampire Blade.

Via Newsarama interview, Crews spoke about playing Blade for animation and what he wanted to bring to the role:

The aspects of Blade I’ve enjoyed most is how deep the character is. You’re talking about a guy who straddles two worlds; he’s a vampire who gets rid of evil vampires. That’s kind of nuts. There’s a certain dichotomy to Blade that’s important, but in doing this with the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series you also have to do it for a children’s audience; people sometimes forget that.

What I wanted to do here is deliver Blade’s gravitas and seriousness to the show, but also bring some fun to it as well. It’s harder than people think to do something serious that’s also palatable for kids. But if you do it right and fine the tone like we did, it works out great. When I saw the results, I was really happy.

Without revealing too much, Crews also spoke excitedly about a scene between Blade and Nick Fury:

Once they showed me the playback of Blade and Nick Fury facing off with each other, I said ‘This is cool as s#$t!’”. Nick Fury there with his eyepatch, Blade with his sharp teeth; seeing those two getting angry and facing off, forcing Spider-Man to separate them, was great. It’s a cool movement, and I’d love to see that in a live-action movie even.

Crews is a favourite fan choice to play the role of Luke Cage AKA Power Man, but he explains that he is not interested in the role simply because Marvel have not expressed interest in it. He goes on to say that he would like to play the Thing from the Fasntastic Four or X-Men's Colossus:

Some people bring up Luke Cage, but honestly I have to step out of that because Marvel’s never really expressed an interest in making it. If Marvel hasn’t expressed interest in it, why should I? I’m interested in actually doing a character that’ll see the light of day; that’s one of the reasons I chose to do Blade here. I don’t want to be a part of something that’s going to sit on the shelf and never get made.

One character I always thought I could play is the Thing from Fantastic Four. Another character I’ve always loved as a fan is Colossus. If there was a way to make that happen that worked, I would love to be Colossus.

You can’t make yourself President; the people make you the President. If people want me to be a part of this superhero genre, it’ll happen. People get what they want. I feel like we need to make new superheroes, African-American superheroes, that people would accept. Whatever I do, it has to be right – for me, for the character, and for the fans.

MexicanChinman - 10/4/2013, 4:19 AM
Does he even lift?
MexicanChinman - 10/4/2013, 4:27 AM
Sorry Mr. Crews, only white people can can have those characters, that you want to play. Acting ability doesn't matter, and the only thing that matters is if the actors look like their characters 100%, even if their performance sucks.
Luminus - 10/4/2013, 4:32 AM
^Would you be okay with a Chinese Superman? Just curious.
MrCBM56 - 10/4/2013, 5:08 AM
MexicanSuperman

Do you know how ironic that statement was. You said only white people can play that charecter but you username is MexicanSuperman.
thalidomide - 10/4/2013, 5:15 AM
Go to DC
StarSpangledBruce - 10/4/2013, 5:25 AM
Two African-Americans making up the all-white Fantastic Four.

Now, I'm not racist in the slightest, but I cringe to think that people will bitch and complain about this.
Luminus - 10/4/2013, 5:26 AM
@MrCBM56: MexicanSuperman was being sarcastic.
sameoldthing - 10/4/2013, 5:38 AM
Crews would play Cage if ere was an actual movie in the works & he was offered it.
That's not happening so..too bad.
NitPicker - 10/4/2013, 5:40 AM
SOB. Terry Crews as Luke Cage would be perfect casting.
SuperCat - 10/4/2013, 5:44 AM
No.

MexicanChinman - 10/4/2013, 5:56 AM
@Luminus, if he gives a good performance, then yes.

@MrCBM56, I'm just bsing.

Honestly though, we already got a Quarter Japanese as Superman (Dean Cain) and he was really good.

They would definitely need a Blue-eyed Caucasian man to play Ben Grimm's human form though. Unlike Johnny and Sue (Micheal B Jordon and Kerrie Washington should play them!), his jewish identity is very integral to the character and "Blue Eyed Thing" is also a part of his identity.
Asterisk - 10/4/2013, 7:14 AM
Dean Norris from Breaking Bad should play The Thing.

That way, whenever people comment on his being made of rocks, he'll be all: "They're minerals."
MexicanChinman - 10/4/2013, 7:39 AM
Gusto could play The Thing. He already has that chiseled body of The Thing, with all those ridges, and he even tans with the Jersey Shore crew, so he is that orange glow.
MexicanChinman - 10/4/2013, 7:40 AM
*he has that orange glow.
SuperSomething616 - 10/4/2013, 7:53 AM
Most roles in films should be open to racial change...

The Thing is not...changing his race would change the very essence of the character, his mannerism, personality...

This would never work...
dougieisrollingthejays - 10/4/2013, 8:13 AM
Blade would be good. but stay with a black character. Also don't do the thing, that next movie will flop...
MisterMagurlypse - 10/4/2013, 10:35 AM
I don't care about changing the race of a character if it's done right and not just for the sake of it. The Thing needs to be cgi this time though.
DudeGuyMan - 10/4/2013, 2:37 PM
I can totally see it.

MightyZeus - 10/8/2013, 1:44 AM
Sure why not. I can picture Terry portraying The Thing. I do however want to see another Blade film. The first two still are amazing comic book movies.
