There are many moments in comic book movies that have fans divided. Many fans believe that the studios should listen to the fans more often, but how much do we know the studio actually listens to us, and do they even care? Well, David S. Goyer, who helped reinvent two of the greatest and most dearest comic characters of all time, Batman and Superman, explained how the fan expectations may or may not influence his writing. He says that "you’re dealing with an incredibly vocal but incredibly tiny sort of [group]. That’s a mistake that I think a lot of sometimes networks and movie studios make is sort of listening too much to [them]. I mean, it’s important to listen to the fan chatter but you’re really talking about a tiny, tiny, tiny portion of your audience that may not be representative of what your mainstream audience actually thinks or feels." He goes on to discuss the fans who feel some things should be done a certain way when it comes to bringing their favorite comic book characters to life on the big screen. He says, "I’m paraphrasing Steve Jobs, it’s like you don’t give the audience or the consumer what they want, you give them what they don’t even know they want. I mean, being involved in some of these comic book movies and stuff like that, people say, well, this is what they should do. And trust me, if we had just done exactly that I don’t think the audiences would have been completely happy. I mean that’s not to say that filmmakers can’t misfire, but if you try to just do what you think the fan community wants you’ll drive yourself crazy and you won’t actually write anything."

Goyer is perhaps most known for his work on Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, but he also adapted comic characters such as Superman, Ghost Rider, the Crow, and Blade. A lot of what he did came straight from, or was inspired by, the comics. But he also made a few controversial changes here and there. What do you think of his comments? Sound off in the usual spot.

Or how about you just don't write shit
ProfessorX - 3/20/2014, 2:15 PM
So basically, "[frick] the fans".
DaVinci31 - 3/20/2014, 2:15 PM
Enough with the hate already, he's going to be but an executive producer on the BvS film. Move on.
MsDarkPhoenix - 3/20/2014, 2:16 PM
I don't even know what I want... So I actually want Jesse to be Lex Luthor but I don't even know it?? I'm confused...
DaVinci31 - 3/20/2014, 2:16 PM
Not to mention he's 100% correct.
SaxoWolf - 3/20/2014, 2:19 PM
I'll wait for the trailer and first pics. Show the damn suits WB!
ChrisEl - 3/20/2014, 2:19 PM
And that, David Goyer, is why you fail.
Starfox - 3/20/2014, 2:20 PM
MrBlackJack is right. Don't start with the BS. The ignorance of that last flame war killed me.
Kurne - 3/20/2014, 2:20 PM
Fans are unhealthy.
DaVinci31 - 3/20/2014, 2:21 PM
@TheDarkPhoenix

Snyder has one of the most impressive casting records, whether it be himself or the team he chooses to surround himself with, the man delivers.

So, to answer your question, yes. Most likely yes.
Moohika - 3/20/2014, 2:24 PM
Goyer= Good idea/concept man,but mediocre writer
Moohika - 3/20/2014, 2:25 PM
@Davinci

You're right, he put Fassbender in his first Hollywood movie
MsDarkPhoenix - 3/20/2014, 2:26 PM
@DaVinci Seriously, I agree with you. I'm not hating on Snyder or Goyer. But BvS has a record of disappointing castings (Affleck, Gadot, Eisenberg) and I actually supported most of them but I just really can't see Jesse as Lex. I hope they prove me wrong but right now I'm not very happy with that casting.
Pasto - 3/20/2014, 2:27 PM
This thread is going to hell in a hand basket.
MsDarkPhoenix - 3/20/2014, 2:29 PM
Pissing off BlackJack?? Lol that's easy!!! Where's your Oscar honey??
AsgardianHobo - 3/20/2014, 2:30 PM
So I guess not liking the dialogue in MoS means I really liked it? I just didn't know it! Thanks!

"That’s a mistake that I think a lot of sometimes networks and movie studios make is sort of listening too much to [them]."

Goyer is calling out other networks/studios? Goyer of all people?

Moohika - 3/20/2014, 2:37 PM
The only problem I have with Eisenberg as Lex is his voice. If he can alter it like Ledger did for Joker and Hardy did for Bane, then I'd be fine with it.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 3/20/2014, 2:38 PM
Moohika
I agree with all your comments
TheGoddamnPeel - 3/20/2014, 2:38 PM
'it’s like you don’t give the audience or the consumer what they want, you give them what they don’t even know they want.'

In terms of applying that idea to your films David Goyer, that hasn't completely worked, and is too risky to continue doing in the future, especially when WB are just trying to build up a DCCU that may one day involve a Justice League movie.

How about you just stick to what we do want to see and hope for, rather than write up ridiculous crazy ideas? Like the TDKR ending? Your idea of Batman forming a deal with the UN to form the Justice League in BvS?

Seriously I really don't like Goyer as a scriptwriter for DC movies, WB needs to get someone else badly.
SaxoWolf - 3/20/2014, 2:39 PM
@MrBlackJack LMAO keep the Leo pics coming
CommanderShepard - 3/20/2014, 2:41 PM
Wow, this is going to end well...
GenerationX - 3/20/2014, 2:42 PM
Cigar* what the [frick] is a sigar???
SpiderFraud - 3/20/2014, 2:44 PM
DC is 4/4 for me..keep it up Goyer.
MsDarkPhoenix - 3/20/2014, 2:46 PM
Yeah MrBJ, that's great but where's the Oscar??? :P
Omarvls - 3/20/2014, 2:47 PM
I can't wait to see Snyder's take on Batman
I think it will be AMAZING
I picture Badass who can take out 20 guys at the same time without breaking a sweat and has INSANE Gadget Tech
typicalfanboy - 3/20/2014, 2:50 PM
OFF WITH HIS HEAD!!!!! We don't know what we want???! Really? We want a wrestler to play a leading character superhero, colorful but mostly gaudy costumes, direct translations of comics to the screen regardless of what era they were made nor how offensive. How dare you not listen to us, goyer?! How dare you, sir.
(Sarcasm)
NetmanTripleSec - 3/20/2014, 2:50 PM
[frick] Goyer.

He's an asshole. Go away, Goyer.

The fans just think what the general audience will eventually think, they're your hardcore crowd which is what the general audience will be if you present the characters right.
Spidey91 - 3/20/2014, 2:51 PM
well f*ck you Goyer, and excuse me for wanting Superman to act like f*cking Superman.
thank God he's not writing the sequel, that movie now has a chance to suck less.
DropAload - 3/20/2014, 2:56 PM
This dude is shit.
MsDarkPhoenix - 3/20/2014, 2:57 PM
Ok MrBJ, I'll stop!! If that makes you feel any better, I believe that you totally deserve an Oscar! And that you're hot!!
DropAload - 3/20/2014, 2:57 PM
And i mean like a turd pile.
DaVinci31 - 3/20/2014, 3:01 PM
@TheDarkPhoenix

Yeah I understand. Definitely still skeptical on the Gadot casting.
Nubase - 3/20/2014, 3:07 PM
the thing is Joss whedon said the same thing, when batman begins come out, he said exactly the same thing that goyer is saying now and what goyer said is correct, it some of you that does not understand, l guess its your age!
mbembet - 3/20/2014, 3:08 PM
lol no wonder mos sucked
JayJayCAW - 3/20/2014, 3:09 PM
Goyer.....STFU.....your drunk.....for the past 15-20 years
batmanvsuperman - 3/20/2014, 3:10 PM
Don't care what anyones talking about just show us and tell us more info they don't even have a name for the movie yet or they didn't tell us wtf
MsDarkPhoenix - 3/20/2014, 3:13 PM
@MrBJ And the real flame war hasn't even started yet...

@DaVinci I can't really judge Gadot because I haven't seen her in many movies. But I've seen Jesse and I think that he isn't the right choice for Lex. I didn't like Chris Evans for Captain America at first though and now I love him so I don't want to say bad things before I see the movie!
EthanSmith - 3/20/2014, 3:14 PM
You guys DO know writers have to make a movie that's good for EVERYONE, right? If writers made the films how the FANS want them to, you'd be the only ones to like it. Notice how comic book fans love Watchmen, but audiences hate it. Notice how Iron Man 3 is loved by audiences and mixed with fans. But most of the time, Marvel knows how to be able to make movies that fans AND the general audience enjoy, but notice how many changes they make. And if movies were just like the comics, what would be the point of making the movie? I loved Man of Steel. I loved The Avengers. The Amazing Spider-Man is my favorite Spider-Man movie. This
just proves you can't please the small minority fans are.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 3/20/2014, 3:16 PM
All I have to say is Arrow has soundly proven that listening to the fans greatly improves the quality of the product. Same with Hasbros' Marvel Legends line of action figures (Even though they are still miles behind the perfection that was ToyBiz).
