Talking with the LA Times' Hero Complex, Bruce Greenwood - who plays Captain Pike in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek - talks about working with the Enterprise crew for the first time for the upcoming Trek sequel, which began production on Thursday. Greenwood also briefly comments on the script, saying that it's 'good' (as expected), as well as expressing his excitement. Meanwhile, co-writer/producer Damon Lindelof comments on making the highly anticipated sequel worth the long wait, saying that everyone involved with the film has the same ambition.

Damon Lindelof On Making The Sequel Worth The Wait...
Every single person involved with this movie has the same ambition — to do everything they can to justify the long wait … to live up to the lofty expectations of 40-year ‘Trek’ fans and those who are coming to the party for the first time. The energy is crackling. The warp core is primed. And we are, at long last, ready to boldly go once again. I hope to God we don’t screw it up.

Bruce Greenwood On Working With The Cast Members Again and His Excitement For the Film...
I was talking to Anton [Yelchin] the other day and he was saying that they all got together on the bridge a few weeks ago and it was just like no time had passed at all. None. I had dinner with Chris [Pine] a few months ago and he said he couldn’t wait to get back with the gang of people that makes this work. The same with me. They’re wonderful people and the show is like the icing. What’s great is the family. I know it’s an overused term and people roll their eyes but it really feels that way to me.

Everybody’s got their script – all printed on red paper with every actor’s name stamped across every page — and their brown bag and we’ve all signed these releases that are as long as your leg. The script is good, as you would expect. You won’t be given anything by anybody when it comes to the movie. It’s easier to push the building than get anything out of anyone. We have a huge stage here, I haven’t seen it. It’s exciting.

Greenwood's an awesome actor. Can't wait. Also Kevin Costner's cool too but i think they should've gotten Greenwood to play Jonathan Kent in Man Of Steel.

Can't wait! I lived in Riverside, CA when 'Trek released and yeah, it kickd my ass up and down the aisles at the Ontario Edwards IMAX. When the Narada emerged from that black hole, my jaw was on the floor.

Worse reboot of all time, turned intelligently written scifi into popcorn action shite for braincell challenged audiences!

@ceejay actually the reboot was incredibly intelligent, more intelligent than the original series.

I recomend you look at the Redlettermedia reviews of some of the Star Trek movies to see just how stupid a comment that really was. You've got rose coloured glasses on mate!

And seriously, anyone trying to say that reboot was intelligently written can't be that intelligent!

1: The Romulans arrive with a ship from the future (TNG time) and blow up one ship that somehow makes an entire change to the universe because why? Since when was Kirks dad of any relevance to any timeline let alone a vulcan one, why would it change Spocks whole history and his people?

2: The Romulans appear in the past with vast technology advance in their ship and what do they do? NOTHING FOR 20 YEARS apart from wait for Spock to turn up so they can get revenge on the only person who tried to save their world! If it was intelligently written they'd have gone straight to their home world that STILL EXISTS in that time, warn them of the cataclysm to come and give them the technological advantage against their enemies with all the knowledge of their advanced tech!

2: How does Checkov appear on the Enterprise before Kirk, it took Kirk years to become a Captain and Chekov wasn't even at Star Fleet at the time! How does Kirks dad dying suddenly throw Checkov into being a Star Fleet graduate before Kirk, McCoy and the rest?

3: How does the most advanced race in Star Fleet (The Vulcans) not have any defenses against a ship with a drill bit burrowing into their planet? These guys were in space thousands of years before we even learned how to do warp drive and Kirks dad dying turns them all into convenient idiots?

There's like so many stupid things like the above that makes no sense other than to contrive an action comedy flick for knuckle-dragggers who can't watch real intelligent scifi that Star Trek has delivered for years. The whole Hollywood concept of turning everything into an action film or action comedy simply speaks volumes on the state of the majority of idiots who pay to go to the cinema to see only one type of movie because they are cerebrally challenged!

Ceejay - 1/14/2012, 10:23 AM
@hush - Yes, because Star Trek was NEVER meant to be film material, its supposed to be intelligent sci fi TV series! A general film audience would never sit through a real Star Trek film and that's why those idiots at Paramount tried to turn every Star Trek film into some ridiculous action film. Worse with TNG crew because everything they did successfully as a TV show has nothing to do with contriving action scenes and silly one-liner jokes for an action movie format.

Best thing they can do is leave Star Trek alone and stop convincing idiots they're watching good Star Trek simply because they've managed to make up another excuse for a sp[ace battle and fist fight! ...Simpletons!

Do you guys realize when you try to push your opinion on someone it only pushes them the other way? ACira liked the movie and the series, Ceejay likes the series but not the movie. Who's right? both and neither. Telling someone they are stupid because they don't agree with you is ....well you know, yeah.
I liked the movie, does that mean I'm stupid? Nope.
Instead of calling someone stupid, try explaining it to us why you think the movie was so bad. And as smart as you think you are, there are a lot of people smarter and the smartest person I know loved the movie and I promise he is smarter than 99% of the people on here.I think this guy here would have approved of this different take on Star Trek as well.

One of the most amusing aspects of this site are the pretentious assclowns who insist that if a movie is just FUN, it can't be good. Loud mouthed douches convinced that their OPINION is the ONLY way to "properly" see things make me laugh, and then pity them for their extremely limited perspective. Those perpetually unhappy dimwits DO make for entertaining reading, even if their credibility is zero.

The first movie was spectacular, and I am among the many, many people eagerly awaiting this sequel.

I'm a Star Trek fan. I enjoyed the new movie. I think it opened the door for new fans to come into the Star Trek world. I'm not a big fan of the Star Trek stuff that doesn't involve the original crew. With that said, the movie was different - the original series dealt with a lot of serious things and topics. The 60s were an exciting time, people thought anything was possible and we were all on the brink of some huge social awakening and on the verge of some huge mental evolution. And the Star Trek of that time reflected that. Today's audience are more interested in other things - and the new Star Trek movie reflected that.

Art reflects what is happening in society at the current time. So I think the new movie did well - and like I said, it brought in new fans to the Star Trek world which is a good thing. And the general message of Star Trek - the future will be bright and positive - was still there. So it worked. The other message of Star Trek is to keep an open mind about things - and I think the fans should learn to do that as well.

My point was not that the reboot was any more intelligently written, only that the original movies are not as intellectual as the myth would have you believe.
The next Generation tv series made a better effort at experimenting with science. But even their movies are a dummed down version for the masses.
All the reboot did was rock and roll it up a bit and ramp the action up.But it works!

@MaddMonkk - I sir, am one of the 1%. But I'm sure you knew that . Very well argued BTW.

As for the first Star Trek: it was awesome...on every level. If one's opinion differs, that's good! It just means we're not all 'mindless worker bees serving the queen' to achieve a common objective.

If that were the case , we would be 'Borg', and assimilation is inevitable.

Differing opinions is healthy. Air it out y'all!

That's one of the great things about this site!

1. The captain of that ship was lost also along with Kirk's father and the ship. That whole crew was displaced and had to be reassigned some might have quit Starfleet as a result. No telling what that crew was supposed to have done together or what relationships might have changed. As a result of an attack by a much more advanced ship would also cause an organization like Starfleet to change lots of things including how they build ships. Also Spock's childhood did not change.

2: Nero said he went to the Romulans and they would not listen to him. Also in a deleted scene it tells what happened to Nero after his ship was crippled the Klingons took them captive. The attack on the prison planet referenced in the film was Nero and his crew escaping from Rura Penthe and reclaiming their vessel.

3. The Checkov part did bother me a little but you can't really have a Star Trek movie about the original crew and not have him there too. Its very much like how the TNG movies kept having Worf on the Enterprise just by coincidence even though he was no longer stationed on it and was even an Ambassador during two of them but did not wear an Ambassador uniform or was called by the title. So the other incarnations are guilty of this kind of thing too. Plus on TOS they never had a Checkov's first day episode so during the early part of the show he could have been working on another part of the ship.

4. We did not see the battle before the Enterprise got there but we did see the wreckage. Nero's ship destroyed all of Vulcan's defenses and most of the Federations Fleet. Also Nero's ship was not just a ship with a drill bit it had Borg tech integrated into it.

Bruce Greenwood is extra awewome in my eyes cause he voiced Batman. I thought the last Star Trek movie was freaking brilliant. I'll buy that crud on DVD and watch it 18 times before see midnite showing of new Star Trek.
