The Vampire Diaries actor has been cast in the lead role of Green Arrow/Oliver Queen in The CW's upcoming pilot Arrow, which will be directed by Smallville's David Nutter.

The CW is working quickly on bringing their next DC television show, Arrow, to life, and today we have the first bit of casting news for the pilot. Deadline reports that Stephen Amell - seen in TV shows such as The Vampire Diaries, 90210 and auditioned for the lead role in Spartacus - has been cast as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow in the David Butter-directed pilot. In the TV project, described as a modern retelling of the story of of the character, Amell "will play the vigilante superhero who fights crime using archery, martial arts and technology under his secret identity as Oliver Queen, a wealthy playboy and billionaire industrialist-turned-outspoken politician in Star City."

Nutter (who previously directed the pilots for Smallville and Supernatural) is set to helm the pilot for the upcoming TV show, while Andrew Kreisberg, Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim worked on the script. Amell is the second actor to play Green Arrow in live action on the network. Justin Hartley previously played Oliver Queen in Smallville.
