Yesterday, we heard that 20th Century Fox has officially confirmed that a sequel to last year's hit sci-fi film Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes was in the works. Now, speaking with Collider, Fox CEO Tom Rothman updated on the status of the sequel. "That’s very much on the tracks. We’re developing a script. Rupert Wyatt, who directed the first one, will direct the second one. We’re pushing forward aggressively, so the script’s being written now."

It was suggested in yesterday's report that the film could begin production this year, potentially for a 2013 release. Rothman, however, says that the studio's goal is to release it in 2014. "Yeah, I think it would make sense if we can, you know we serve no wine before it’s time, but the goal for us would be summer of 2014, if that’s possible."

Also set to return is Andy Serkis, who signed on a few months ago to reprise his role as Caesar in any potential sequel. There's currently no word on if any of the other cast members (such as James Franco) from the first movie will return, but be sure to check back for more updates on Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes 2.

UPDATE: In an interview with MTV, Rothman confirms the 2014 release date, Andy Serkis' commitment, and making sure the script is as good as the first film (if not better).

"I think one of the big questions they're wrestling with now, which is kind of the fun, is how far forward do we skip?" Rothman said. "When does it start? Does it start the next day? The next year? Does it start in 10 years? Does it start in 50 years?"

"The script for that 'Apes' film was fantastic," Rothman explained. "We had the script for 10 years, and I always knew it was one of the best scripts. I just didn't think it was possible to do it. I thought it couldn't be done. We've got to have a great script. Because now, having made that good a movie, we better make the next one better."

The only problem with that is that this movie was made to set up for later movies. The Apes still haven't taken over the Earth and at the end of the first film there seemed to be the rise of a pandemic that would cause the fall of humans. It would leave a huge cliffhanger if they just decided to make this a stand-alone movie.

The way I see it, they have it set up for 3 movies:

Rise: what we saw

Apes 2: Actual war between Apes and the dying Humans

Apes 3: The crew aboard the shuttle return to earth and see that Apes now rule

That being said, releasing the movie in 2014 is the best option. It gives everyone enough time to fine tune the movie and open up any schedules for anyone who's busy ie. Andy Serkis who is Gollum and Second unit Director for the Hobbit and will be quite busy for the next year. Plus with Man of Steel coming out in 2013 (summer I presume) and The Hobbit in December of 2013, it'd be best to wait till 2014 to have little to compete with

2014 is a good target. Don't rush it. Remember, quality over quantity.

@Gmoney84 Exactly. They'll have plenty of time to fine tune it. The main actors wont dramatically age over the course of the trilogy or even if they decide to do 5 movies ie: Franco & Pinto. And the apes are all CGI. They can make this really good and I am sure they will.
