Philip Seymour Hoffman Confirmed For THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE

After reportedly being offered the role a few weeks ago, Mission: Impossible III actor Philip Seymour Hoffman is set to play 'Plutarch Heavensbee' in Lionsgate's highly anticipated adaptation of the second Hunger Games novel.

One of the first casting reports for Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - the sequel to the wildly successful adaptation of the Suzanne Collins novel - was that Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote, Mission: Impossible III) was offered a major role in the highly anticipated flick. Now, E! News has learned that the Oscar winner has officially signed on for the role of 'Plutarch Heavensbee' in the sequel (despite Lionsgate not making an official announcement yet). One source told the site that a deal was made shortly before the Fourth Of July holiday. The character is described as the new Gamemaker after Seneca Crane (SPOILERS for those who haven't read the novel) was executed following the events of The Hunger Games.

With production expected to commence this fall, Lionsgate is currently casting various roles for the film. Jena Malone (Sucker Punch) was recently confirmed to be playing Johanna Mason, while Kevin Nash (The Punisher) also revealed a couple weeks ago that he was in talks for an unspecified role. Still to be cast is Finnick Odair, with various actors being linked to the part over the past couple months or so. And of course, much of the main cast from the first movie (Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, etc.) is expected to return for the sequel.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is expected to hit theaters November 22nd, 2013.

Crane wasn't executed in the film. didn't they leave him in a room with those poison berries Katniss & Peeta threatened to eat?

And when Snow visits Katniss in her home at the beginning of Catching Fire, he tells her that Crane has been executed.

Catching Fire is the best book in the series, I hope they do things right.
