I assume that the story takes place after "Origins" So it must be closer to the present day, may be in the 80's or 90's

@coloso .. i think wolverine is comming back to japan... i think the past wolverine will be the one we saw in the past set pics, where he was running from a japanesse fortress in ww2 ... maybe he is just comming back to find out about his past

The story is in ww2. Hes in a concentration camp. Theyve stated it. I agree with misterjay above. Hes returning to japan to rediscover his past.

Clearly the whole film will not take place in WW2 era Japan.
Anybody seen the set photos where a long haired Logan is said to be confronting hunters (wearing modern hunting gear)?
And as far as Logan not having his adamantium... Have you folks actually read the Frank Miller series?
Why not wait until the film hits screens before judging it so quickly. At least it's in the hands of a versatile filmmaker who can deal with action scenes.

The Miller Claremont mini-series was so epic and I do believe it changed the industry somewhat, just like MIller did with his original Daredevil run. I would love to see that storyline on the screen. There's not much you'd have to change in order to appeal to the general audience, but Fox in all their ignorance, will most likely screw this up! That my Geek friends is a damn shame. I was in high school when I bought and read that mini-series. It defined Wolverine's character and paved the road for other Wolverine writers and artists.

Of course he can't still have his bone claws in this film. Whatever the comic book continuity it would make for pretty stop 'n' start fight scenes conceptually when its bone vs samurai steel.
