Gerard Butler Won't Appear In 300: BATTLE OF ARTEMISIA

During the early development for Warner Bros.' upcoming follow-up to 300, Battle Of Artemisia, there was interest in bringing back Gerard Butler's King Leonidas for a cameo appearance. Butler even said that he'd love to do it if it was "something special". With production underway for a 2013 release, many have been wondering if Butler was still interested in making an appearance. However, in an interview with MTV, the actor confirms that he won't have anything to do with the Noam Murro-directed film.

"Oh, yeah, I'm not doing it," Butler told the site. "They're filming [the '300' sequel] right now. I wish them the best, but it didn't [work out]. It wasn't really my thing."

The cast currently consists of Evan Green, Rodrigo Santoro (who reprises his role as King Xerxes from the first movie), Sullivan Stapleton, Callan Mulvey and Jack O'Connell. The story, based on Frank Miller's Xerxes graphic novel, follows the Persian king's struggle to become a god, as well as his battles with Greek warlord Themistocles (Stapleton) and goddess Artemesia (Eva Green).

300: Battle Of Artemisia currently has a release date of August 2nd, 2013. You can see Gerard Butler next in the surfing drama Chasing Mavericks, which is out October 26th.

Oh. First. Isn't the graphic novel supposed to come out before the film on this one? Hope it's better than holy terror!

@Starscream9289: I'd agree, but apparently the follow-up takes place during the events of the 300 battle, so a Leonidas cameo wasn't out of the question.

Butler deserves better, so I'm glad he's not doing it. The whole movie feels like a cash grab to me.

Well that sucks. In other words, Butler thinks its gonna suck!

Thanks for the heads up, GB! I was hesitant about this after it was announced Snyder wasn't returning. Unless this looks REALLY good, I'ma pass.

One shitty 300 movie was probably enough for Butler. Impossibly, the sequel will probably be worse.

King Leonidas had a bit of a belly at the interview?.
It was 7 years ago he had to get in-shape for the role and the training (as evident on the blu-ray extras) was brutal. I wouldn't fancy having to get back to that crazy level of fitness at his age.

@biggest[foo foo] ... maybe dislike it for its historical inaccuracies and the fact that it clearly has historical biases

Oh wow... I was hoping he would be involved in some capacity.

300 was such a great movie. I'm glad I finally decided to sit and watch it.

I wasn't really too excited for this prequel idea to begin with. Now I don't think I'll bother with it.
Maximus101 - 8/21/2012, 5:15 PM
Are you kidding me? 300 was epic and is better than most cbm's. It will be hard to live up to the first one though.
Godzillafart - 8/21/2012, 6:33 PM
@biggest[foo foo]: I understand a lot of people just like pretty action even if it's garbage. 300, Transformers, etc. (although at least transformers occasionally injects some humor). 300 hurts my brain to watch.

villain001 - 8/22/2012, 6:33 AM
300 should be a stand alone
dahamma - 8/22/2012, 6:34 AM
there goes my interest in this movie lol This guy is a SUPERB actor. Best part of 300. He steals the spotlight ine very filmhe's in because he's that good of an actor
gaikinger - 8/22/2012, 8:55 AM
300 is a stand alone. Unless the same director continues a series of films, for me, those films remain stan alones. If you want, and i do, you can look at Star Wars as a stand alone. No one knows for sure whether their films are going to do so well that they will be allowed to move forward with additional films. Most sequels seem more like afterthoughts unless they are adaptions to book series like Lord of the Rings or serials like Twilight. One film that stands out in its dellusion that it would get additional sequels that didnt would be Pandorum. Personally i wouldnt mind seeing more but even this could apply to a stand alone rule.
DoomXfactor - 8/22/2012, 4:48 PM
300 was awesome but I don't know how to feel about this movie. Hopefully it doesn't suck
BrotherJohnson - 8/23/2012, 2:37 AM
gaikinger- You can pretend that the film is a stand-alone, but that would not be consistent with reality.
