WONDER WOMAN Series Being Developed By The CW; Will Focus On Diana's Origins

After NBC passed on David Kelly's Wonder Woman pilot last year, The CW network are reportedly planning their own take on the DC Comics character. The story is apparently an origins-based tale, a la Smallville. More details after the jump.

Only a year ago, David E. Kelly unsuccessfully attempted to bring Wonder Woman back to the big screen with his pilot starring Adrianne Palicki. After NBC passed on the pilot, many have been wondering when or if the Amazonian Princess would return to the small screen. Now, with Warner Bros. Pictures slowly working on a big screen feature, Vulture has learned that The CW (who have previously developed Smallville and will launch Arrow next month) are working with Warner Bros. TV and DC Comics for a television series based on Diana of Temyscira, and would focus on Diana's origin story.

Under the working title Amazon, Allan Heinberg (Young Avengers, Grey's Anatomy) is writing this new take on the DC Comics character, who is famously a part of DC's "Trinity" alongside Batman and Superman. Vulture says that the series "will focus on Wonder Woman as a young, budding superhero, rather than a fully formed defender of liberty." Sounds a lot like Smallville to me. The site also says that only a script is being developed right now, and CW have not greenlit a pilot.

As for the planned Wonder Woman movie, the last update we received was back in June, when WB hired writer Michael Goldenberg (Green Lantern, Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix) to pen the script. The movie will likely follow the studio's planned Justice League movie, which may be released in 2015. If Amazon is picked up and a success on The CW, then increased interest in a Wonder Woman film is more or less a given. Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments below.

THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 9/6/2012, 1:11 PM
The only station to handle something very professionally is HBO imo. CW is a horrible channel.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 9/6/2012, 1:12 PM
I second JDUKE's comment

chanel preston was a pretty good wonder woman in justice league xxx & wonder woman interactive.
DarkGrifter - 9/6/2012, 1:17 PM
I feel as though the only way you can truly capture the scope and scale of a character like Wonder Woman is by doing a movie, preferably with a large budget. She has such a rich background and mythology, it will be hard to translate that to a tv series.
IronLeprechaun - 9/6/2012, 1:20 PM
My Fvcking god... Make the damn movie you assholes

This is destined to fail because CW is making it and this is just a move to giver her TV time... idiots
Maxi91291 - 9/6/2012, 1:20 PM
Wow .. Tori Black as WW ...now that would be a superhero for adults and mature audiences
ironpool007 - 9/6/2012, 1:26 PM
Sounds like shit. Though having Heinburg as a writer would be good.
ItsNotASchooner - 9/6/2012, 1:28 PM
Just saw Haywire

Gina Carano would be awesome as WW
marantaz - 9/6/2012, 1:28 PM
This is the way for WB/DC to go, I think, and I said it here before: use TV to re-introduce the character, lay the foundation, then make a movie and make it big. They've got Supes and Batman, known characters in modern up to date features, but WW and any other characters they want to put in a JL movie are not presentable to the general audience without some kind of a reboot to spark interest. Introducing Diana (and yeah, I'm gonna be sexist, she has to be hot and busty, a large and visually stunning woman who looks like she could beat the hell out of you and you'd enjoy it, even beg for it... ) again as a young Amazon is the way to go (I'd have Lynda Carter play her mother... just cuz). With the right sets and stories, they can do this.

Unless they want to spend 15-20 minutes introducing each character in a JL movie....
Maxi91291 - 9/6/2012, 1:29 PM
Maybe they just want to really do this smallville stzyle .. you know . she is young , a teenager going to amazon high .. facing normal amazon teenage problems .. all girls in amazon high ... whoops toris back in my head ....

Again then she goes as a young amazon to the US and she finds an agent who says he can get her a job as an actress ... whoops tori again ..

But seriously ... smallville sucks

Ha1frican - 9/6/2012, 1:33 PM
Maybe they'll try to tie it in with ARROW
HelaGood - 9/6/2012, 1:34 PM
do they REALLY need a TV Series to see if there is interest in a WW film?????????

WB are a bunch of [frick]ing idiots
TheSoulEater - 9/6/2012, 1:35 PM
Check out my idea for a Wonder Woman show that could work

WonderWoman-cast
grandizer74 - 9/6/2012, 1:35 PM
I think the problem with gina carano as WW is WW actually talks, and gina carano can't act. maybe reinvent WW as a mute just so carano can play her?
Ha1frican - 9/6/2012, 1:35 PM
But im not for a tv show. I say yes to a movie if its all out fantasy greek mythology, and special effects out the wazoo but i dnt see a tv sow being th least bit interesting... guess ill wait to see whos involved
ATrueHero1987 - 9/6/2012, 1:36 PM
@CaptainObvious Agreed

SN: Hello Wonder Woman :)

HelaGood - 9/6/2012, 1:37 PM
the only, ONLY reason the old TV show worked was because of Lynda Carter's body. the show was crap and so campy, BUT we had LC to look at so it didnt matter.

making a WW TV show today is a such a lame idea. who wants to see WW as a "budding superhero"? i want to see her as a full grown hot busty amazon woman!!!
HelaGood - 9/6/2012, 1:38 PM
@Marvel87
those pics are so very wrong
HelaGood - 9/6/2012, 1:38 PM
yeah lets get a writer who has worked on greys anatomy to write and action tv show! BRILLIANT!!!
jimpinto24 - 9/6/2012, 1:41 PM
Reading the brief plot, it sounds like the WW TV series will be just like Smallville.
marantaz - 9/6/2012, 1:47 PM
Marvel87, I....I .... I.... wow.... look at that.... omg.... uhh.... ummmmm..... oh wow..... is that painted on?... that butt.... ooooohhhhhh.... daaaaaammmmmmmnnnnnn..... is that real?.... jeeeeeeezzzzzuzzzzzzz....!!!
THABATMAN - 9/6/2012, 1:48 PM
this doesn't need to happen. If it will be anything like Smallville it doesn't need to happen. And thats coming from a somewhat fan of Smallville.
It better take place on Temyscira
Suzanne - 9/6/2012, 1:51 PM
Good they should have done this sooner. This should be the DC show debuting in October on the CW not Arrow. They should have also done one called Gotham City.

Nadia Bjorlin as Wonder Woman

Steve Burton as Steve Trevor
SimpleObserverOfThings - 9/6/2012, 1:51 PM
Zeusdammit, why DC why? Why can't we just make it a great greek mythology film with great scenes of action, scenery, really great story....

...Didn't they learn from the failed tv series that was made but never released???
marvel72 - 9/6/2012, 1:56 PM
taylor cole for wonder woman but only in a big screen movie, not to be wasted in a shitty cw tv show.
MajorRoboto - 9/6/2012, 1:57 PM
Heinberg wrote a Wonder Woman comic:

Not that he'll be able to do this kind of action on the CW, but this and his Young Avengers and Avengers: Children's Crusade comics are really well written.
ATrueHero1987 - 9/6/2012, 1:59 PM
@HelaGood Why is it wrong?
lntrn8 - 9/6/2012, 2:01 PM
guys & lover of women. . . this is a fantastic idea, as long as it centers around paradise island, NOT a Diana "Felicity" Prince show (princess lost in New York).

I say, bring on the Vestal Virgins!

OwenWilsonsNose - 9/6/2012, 2:02 PM
Ugh. Just make a frickin movie. If you can make a character like Thor work in a film, you can certainly make Wonder Woman work. She deserves better than the Smallville treatment.
MJPETTY7 - 9/6/2012, 2:04 PM
I'm up for this! More DC shows on the CW is better!!!
