Speaking with News Day, actor Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker, The Adjustment Bureau) discusses his recent casting as Sam Wilson/The Falcon in Marvel Studios' highly anticipated sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He gives a run down of the character's biography, and reveals that it's a "huge honor" for him to be portraying the first African-American superhero in mainstream comics as well as being somebody that his son, nephews and nieces could idolize. For News Day's full interview with Mackie (in which he discusses the impact that The Hurt Locker has had on his career, among other things), click the link below.

"I’m playing the Falcon. He’s this guy in Harlem who moved to California and became a drug dealer. His plane crashed, and he was genetically altered, and he can fly, has telepathic powers. He’s the first African-American superhero. It makes me feel all the work I’ve done has been paying off. I have a son, nephews and nieces, and I love the idea that they can dress up as the Falcon on Halloween. They now have someone they can idolize. That’s a huge honor for me."

Chris Evans is set to reprise his role as Steve Rogers/Captain America, while Sebastian Stan will return to play Bucky Barnes (who becomes the assassin "Winter Soldier", as suggested by the title). Marvel Studios are currently looking for the film's female lead, with Anna Kendrick (50/50), Imogen Poots (Fright Night) and Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) all said to be up for the unspecified role. Joe and Anthony Russo (Community) are set to direct, while the script was written by Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus. The story picks up "where The Avengers leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and S.H.I.E.L.D. and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world."

With filming expected to begin in March, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set to hit theaters April 4th, 2014.

i wonder how they are gonna portray him on screen, is he gonna fly? is he gonna be a shield agent?
Angelus - 9/15/2012, 6:51 AM
What Pux said. Still, it's a great step forwards!
shadearts - 9/15/2012, 6:54 AM
So what are Blade and War Machine chop liver
RocknSntchRvlvr - 9/15/2012, 6:54 AM
Sooooo, what's wrong with idolizing a superhero that's Caucasian? Don't get me wrong I'm happy for the news and Anthony, but again, why can't the nieces and nephews and his son, idolize any other super hero??? Does the super hero need to be the same race?
toco89 - 9/15/2012, 6:59 AM
@rocknSntchRvlvr

He didn't say anything as wrong with that. He was showing pride for his characters race.

I've heard and seen Mackie make sly insinuations about race, but this is not one of them. He was adressing his family looking up to him.
sameoldthing - 9/15/2012, 7:02 AM
It really is important for other races to have someone represent them,showing diversity is important & logical.
If superpowers really existed then many races would have them.

The Falcon has been a partner to Cap many,many times so his appearance makes sense but Black Panther MUST get his own movie,if done correct it would blow minds!
RunawaysHD - 9/15/2012, 7:02 AM
I think he's talking about his children looking up to their father. Not because of colour.. the fact that they have an uncle/father as a superhero would be cool and you'd want to look up and be like them.
RunawaysHD - 9/15/2012, 7:04 AM
I'm still waiting for some Luke Cage, Blade and Black Panther too
marvel72 - 9/15/2012, 7:05 AM
@ pux

falcon is a part of the winter soldier storyline so he should be in it.

as for having a movie before luke cage & black panther,he should have before luke cage but not black panther purely for the fact that he's been in the comics longer.

black panther fantastic four 52 (1966)
falcon captain america 117 (1969)
luke cage hero for hire 1 (1972)

of course black panther & luke cage are more popular than the falcon,but he is needed for the movie.
RocknSntchRvlvr - 9/15/2012, 7:07 AM
@runawaysho

Very great point!

@lothing

Completely agree about Black Panther. He needs screen time soon.
JonathaNisMagnuM - 9/15/2012, 7:11 AM
Uhhhhhh Yea I'm with mawilli4, when was this confirmed?!? I never got any artice, only thing was stuff on collider that he was in final negotiations w/ MARVEL. Either way, IT'S AWESOME, & TBH Guys, IDK why some of you are a little upset that BP & Luke Cage arent in a Movie yet & Falcon is. I mean 10-15 yrs ago nobody said "Can't believe we're getting a Blade Movie before a Black Panther". Besides, if yall are worried about why which movies come 1st you should be asking, HOW DOES GOTG GET GREENLIT BEFORE DOC STRANGE OR BLK PANTHER? LOL Awesome News either way though
figuresmaniac - 9/15/2012, 7:17 AM
Cool, more superheroes, more Hot Toys to collect
TheAbomination - 9/15/2012, 7:24 AM
I love how Marvel is giving us every black superhero but Black Panther. He better show up by Phase 3.
DrDoom - 9/15/2012, 7:26 AM
While it's great to see him, we still need Black Panther.
Also

@Jonathanismagnum

The real questions you should be asking is why Ant-Man was greenlit . . . . ever.
SpecialKail - 9/15/2012, 7:26 AM
I have a feeling they'll go ultimate falcon. They wouldnt go ultimate hawkeye and not go ultimate falcon. Also, they need to put Isaiah Bradley in a captain america movie.
thewonderer - 9/15/2012, 7:34 AM
LOST

@rocknsntchrvr- that's like asking what's wrong with worshipping a white Jesus. The context here is The history of White and black race relations in America. America has been very under handed in its portrayal of blacks in the media,movies and television. They have protrayed white is alright (even though Caucasians aren't white skinned, their closer to pink) and black is evil. So many young black kids grew up with out positive role models that looked like them. I grew up idolizes the rifle man, mccloud, Steve Austin the six million dollar man and Evil kinevil to name a few. But what this does overtime is to lower self worth and self identity.

The hero's journey is color blind. All mythic hero's can be protrayed with various skin types, reflecting the diversity seen on earth. If Caucasians want a Caucasian Jesus let them have one, if people of color want Jesus to look like them, that's fine too. Black Americans deserve black hero's just as much as white AMERICAN'S deserve white one. There is nothing wrong with looking up to a hero no matter the skin color but don't be upset with this actor for stating finally my kin folks get a hero they can relate to. I still love Batman, Spidey and Cap, they are still my favorites but I understand where he's coming from.
thalidomide - 9/15/2012, 7:40 AM
I have no idea that Mackie is already confirmed for the part of Falcon. When did this happened?
RSDhillon - 9/15/2012, 7:41 AM
I thought Black Panther was the first black superhero?
calin88 - 9/15/2012, 7:41 AM
This guy doesn't fit the part at all. He looks like a wimp who gets his ass kicked on the playground. Falcon should look like what MrEko posted
marvel72 - 9/15/2012, 7:46 AM
@ pux

yeah we do need more movies,there is plenty of heroes that need introducing.

personally i would of left the winter soldier story until captain america 3.
IIIAdamantiumIII - 9/15/2012, 7:47 AM
he was wonderful in the hurt locker
NITRAMtheJudge - 9/15/2012, 7:49 AM
Ok I didn't read the whole article and I don't feel I need to, but I'm kind of confused on what Anthony means by first Black superhero go mainstream.I mean I'm 20 and I'm pretty sure the first Black superhero to go mainstream was Spawn. Is Spawn not a superhero? What about Blade, is he not a superhero? Them 2 guys were mainstream. The Blade series even had 3 films that I thought were pretty good. So tell me is he saying he's the first Black superhero to go mainstream for a new generation...

But hey good for him on the role, I'm looking forward to seeing how he does, can't wait for this sequel.
NotU - 9/15/2012, 7:50 AM
@LEVITIKUZ

Pepperidge Farm remembers.
gambgel - 9/15/2012, 7:51 AM
telephatic powers? didnt know that
do you think they will use that power on the sequel?
BlackHulk - 9/15/2012, 7:51 AM
Black Panther is the first black superhero from marvel but he is also African. Falcon is African American, but who knows' there might be hope for Black Panther to make a cameo. After all, in the comics, Black Panther gave Falcon a more advanced version of his flying harness so they might mention it in the movie as an easter egg.
mctrinket - 9/15/2012, 7:52 AM
Since when is he genetically altered? I thought he just had a lame jet pack.
Keldor - 9/15/2012, 7:52 AM
AS long as we keep perpetuating the myth of race, there will always be racism. (hint- there is onlyone race of humans. The Human Race. Race and racism is a socio political term used to control, have power over and divide people. just sayin.)
DrDoom - 9/15/2012, 7:54 AM
@RSDhillon

Black Panther was the first black and first African superhero.
Falcon was the first African-American superhero.
Black and African-American are not the same thing.
ATrueHero1987 - 9/15/2012, 7:55 AM
When he meant first Black superhero, he meant like one of the first created, one of the originals. The Falcon came before Blade and way before Steel.

SN: Waiting patiently for the Black Panther movie :)
superotherside - 9/15/2012, 8:02 AM
Awesome. I didn't realize Falcon was confirmed. Sounds great though. Even more excited for Cap 2... if that's possible. :P
GUNSMITH - 9/15/2012, 8:04 AM
HOWEVER THEY PORTRAY HIM ITS GONNA BE GOOD
theboywonder - 9/15/2012, 8:10 AM
Was he genetically altered in the comics?
Geeksiah - 9/15/2012, 8:24 AM
@rocknsntchrvr- THE GEEKSIAH SPEAKS!

Stop being silly.........

Known fact kids needs heroes that look like them, they really do. They can like a hero who looks different but there is a disconnect.

Nuff Said....
DrRockso - 9/15/2012, 8:26 AM
I hear black men have enormous penises, but I don't believe it.
RunDTC - 9/15/2012, 8:30 AM
Mackie's a fantastic actor. looking forward to seeing him in the film.
toco89 - 9/15/2012, 8:37 AM
Maybe that's the Lobo the Rock wants to play and somebody just assume that its the better known one.
Natetrix79 - 9/15/2012, 8:39 AM
I hope he is a Shield Agent when he meets Cap & they become friends/partners. If he's a agent then I can see him popping up on the tv show now & then......how awesome would that be??? What if?!! (I use to love those comics) Marvel would shoot little guest apperences with the Avengers on their solo movie sets for the show? Like have a quick talk with Tony about some new tech or have Cap give a training session to a couple of agents......DOIT MARVEL, DO IT!!!!
scmittydude - 9/15/2012, 8:46 AM
@DrRockso
Shane Diesel haha
marvel72 - 9/15/2012, 8:47 AM
@ nomis

i think i've found earlier than lobo 1965,dc comics showcase 37 iron of the metal men 1962.

unless you mean a solo hero & not a team member than lobo is probably earliest.
Gromblidor - 9/15/2012, 8:48 AM
You idiots, we are all of the human race. Don't confuse race with human biological variation. Falcon should be a mix othe 616 and the Ultimate: Cosmic Cube Origin, keep Redwing, modernized suit with hints of the traditional.
DioFoRio - 9/15/2012, 8:55 AM
@RocknSntchRvlvr...that's a silly statement.

Hope they drop the Drug Dealer aspect from the origin.
NeoBaggins - 9/15/2012, 9:12 AM
Falcon is in the film and Mackie is playing him? Didn't know that. Awesome.

Now everybody from the 313, put ya mutha[frick]in hands up and follow meeee....

Look... while he stands tough, notice that this man did not have his hands up!

LaputaHeir - 9/15/2012, 9:15 AM
"He’s this guy in Harlem who moved to California and became a drug dealer."

To be honest, I've never known anything about the Falcon's origins.
But after reading that he's a one-time drug dealer...smh...

I guess, for the majority of Black male characters in comics, before they can become superheros or anything constructive, that have to had at least sold drugs once in your lifetime. Or, lived a life full of various forms of incorrectness.

I'm sorry, but if having a non-White/Black superhero comes at the expense of them reinforcing harmful lingering stereotypes, then you can keep them. Because such portrayals do more harm than good to the global image of the Black male.
GunMetalScroll - 9/15/2012, 9:19 AM
I really hope Cap has a new suit, i can not say i liked the one he was wearing in The Avengers.
