First Look Inside The Ark Of Darren Aronofsky's NOAH

Cinematographer Matthew Libatique has tweeted a new set picture from Darren Aronofsky's currently-filming Biblical epic Noah, giving us a first peek at the inside of Noah's (Russel Crowe) reptilian-filled ark. Check it out after the jump.

NOAH is a close adaptation of the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark. In a world ravaged by human sin, Noah is given a divine mission: to build an Ark to save creation from the coming flood. The screenplay was written by Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel and revised by Academy Award®-nominated screenwriter John Logan (GLADIATOR, HUGO). Scott Franklin and Aronofsky of Protozoa Pictures, along with Mary Parent of Disruption Entertainment, will produce the film. The film will be executive produced by Ari Handel (BLACK SWAN), Arnon Milchan of New Regency and Chris Brigham (INCEPTION, ARGO).

Noah stars Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Douglas Booth, Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, Kevin Durand and Dakota Goyo. The film is set to hit theaters March 28th, 2014.

Odinsbeard You can't understand that? There are different kinds of snakes? Grass snake, rattlesnake, cobra, etc. So yeah that would make sense there are a lot of them... lol

I personally wouldn't have minded one bit if the snakes were kept off the ark. I hate snakes about as much as Indiana Jones does.

Why do I care about an Old Testament myth which was ripped off from the Sumerian tale of Utnapishtim in the Epic of Gilgamesh?

I'm more interested in a director with balls helming a film about the Epic of Gilgamesh.

I'm more interested in seeing how they explain the Carnivore species of animals surviving for 40 days and nights when there was only 2 of each species.

Yeah I agee. Hopefully it's faithful to the Bible. I definitely think it would be cool to have a great Bible account like that turned into a film with great actors.

If they can maintain the accuracy of this story unlike the one that John Voight did a few years ago and point out the trials and tribulations of having to undergo the housing of all of God's creatures and what it took to get through that, then I expect a brilliant movie.

@MrEko. The reason the Flood story was popular in that area, is *because* the Epic of Gilgamesh is the source from where the Bible takes the story. The Epic of Gilgamesh was written long before anything in the Bible, it's arguably the oldest known source of humans writing stories ever discovered.

@Wingding. If it's faith to the bible, then, Noah will be a terrible drunken alcoholic, who sits around his tent, drunk with his junk hanging out and his kids making fun of him.

I don't understand Aronofsky's thought process on this one. He has a choice between making one of two films, both with fictional and somewhat silly story's. How does he not pick the one with [frick]ing Wolverine!

@MrEko, do your homework - the Epic of Gigalmesh was written long long long before the bible.
The bible is a rip off and a mashup of ancient myths. Sorry.

supertoherside@ the "i don't understand" comment was in reference to the shiny gold light. i offered no context and yeah that one pretty much fell flat on the floor. no defending that one

but the two snakes comment was just a jab at how ludicrous the entire concept is. funny how everyone tried to get serious about it and explain to me how there are different kinds of snakes. THANKS!! but the excerpt from the text book is a nice touch... i don't think i could have grasped the fact that there are different kinds of snakes without that. one question tho... where's the trouser snake?

@cole33: The Mayans included a great flood in their religion, as well. Yes, I'm talking about the Mayans of Central America. According to them, their gods had created a forerunner species to humans. Because the gods were not satisfied with that species, they wiped them out with a flood, and they started fresh. Now, "The Epic of Gilgamesh" was written somewhere between 2700 BCE and 2500 BCE. The last paleolithic people to travel to the Americas was several thousand years before that. Was it not possible that a great flood could of actually happened? If I am not mistaken, then the Mayans aren't the only Native americans to include a great flood. Not to mention, I think some Pacific Islanders also include a great flood.

An "Epic of Gilgamesh" movie could easily be really bad. In the ancient myth, Gilgamesh cries more than Spider-Man in the movies. He only cares about himself and his friend Enkidu. He forced the women that he ruled to have sex with him which can't really be redeemed by simply sharing his story with others. All his people hated him. It's a wonder that they didn't overthrow him.

You are of the wrong mentality then. Yes, there are countless versions throughout the world of the ancient flood myth but archaeology has proven the Biblical version most of us are familiar with was written down several thousands of years AFTER it occurred. We also know that the Biblical account most closely resembles the version from the Sumerian account which was prevalent in Mesopotamia among the Assyrians, Babylonians, Chaldeans, and Akkadians for thousands of years before the Old Testament was written.

So, yes, the Noah story is a rip off of a distinct variant of the flood myth. No, it isn't the same thing as having a different story of the same myth - especially when an older variant was popularly circulating in written form in the same region well before the Biblical account was written. Arguing such would the logical equivalent of saying that West Side Story was just derived from the Greek myth of Pyramus and Thisbe thousands of year before and ignoring how it an adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet which was the original adaptation of the original Greek myth.

That's exactly why it would take a director with balls. Gilgamesh was so unlike what many American audiences are used to. He's an even more extreme version of Conan the Barbarian.

I also suggest you actually read the Epic of Gilgamesh. It is NOTHING like anything you will find in the Book of Genesis.

I'd be more excited to see a film about Moses or Adam&Eve but I guess this will do for now.

Maybe it will open the door for more films from the bible.

Trying to apply logic to such a ridiculous story is folley.

There are MILLIONS of animal species on Earth. Is Aranofsky actually saying Noah had 2 of each on a single boat?

For those who came in late.... This movie will not be based on the Biblical accounts, Its based on a Graphic Novel written by Aronofsky, so of coarse he would choose to do this movie rather than doing the Wolverine, he has more passion for a graphic novel he wrote, just makes sense that he would put all his effort into making this film. For those who are looking for a play by play Biblical account don't get your hopes up, Aronofsky is going to surprise us all with what he is doing, I personally is looking forward to seeing it as pure entertainment :)
