Last week, X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn left production on the film's highly anticipated sequel, Days Of Future Past. We also heard that Bryan Singer - who launched the X-Men film franchise with 2000's X-Men and 2003's X2: X-Men United - was the studio's top choice to take over directing duties for the film. Now, Deadline confirms that Singer will helm X-Men: Days Of Future Past, which is described as "apocalyptic" by creative consultant Mark Millar. Additionally, Vaughn is near a deal to produce, alongside writer Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner. Singer's next film, Warner Bros.' Jack The Giant Slayer, has been slated for a March 1st, 2013 release.

Most of the cast members from First Class - which includes James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence - is set to return for the sequel. 20th Century Fox hope that they can make the film's July 18th, 2014 release date. Filming is said to be commencing in early 2013, after Lawrence wraps up Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

UPDATE: In their article reporting the news, Bleeding Cool say that they've heard that there is a "meaningful number" of cast members from the original X-Men film who will be present in Days Of Future Past. Patrick Stewart (Professor X) and Famke Janssen (Jean Grey) previously teased their possible involvement with a future X-Men movie, while Shawn Ashmore (Iceman) and Daniel Cudmore (Colossus) recently expressed interest in reprising their roles in Days Of Future Past.

OK. Sucks that Vaughn is not coming back, BUT I'm hoping for the best.
TheSkywalkingKnight - 10/30/2012, 3:24 PM
Yeah, Superman Returns was rubbish. But X-Men and X-2 were great, so I'm optimistic!
PantherX - 10/30/2012, 3:29 PM
Well, at least it won't have a problem with returning to its roots -- for better or worse.
CaptainObvious - 10/30/2012, 3:33 PM
Singer is a horrible director, the X-Men franchised is ruined, Marvel needs to buy the rights back, and blah blah blah blah.

There. I just saved you 4 comment pages .
nowtheresaBATman - 10/30/2012, 3:34 PM
I concur w/ CaptianObvious
Spidey91 - 10/30/2012, 3:35 PM

I'm glad Fox hired Bryan Singer to direct X-Men:Days of Future Past. I thought he did a great job with the first two X-Men films & I enjoyed Superman Returns (Regardless what people say)
Luis75 - 10/30/2012, 3:37 PM
X-MEN MOVIE FRANCHISE IS DEAD R.I.P.
gambgel - 10/30/2012, 3:40 PM
great news finally!

a bit sad for Matthew leaving but happy for Singer back as a director on the franchise.

This sequel will be Amazing!
95 - 10/30/2012, 3:41 PM
Oh, so this is the bad news of the day, huh? :P

Mark Millar better keep Bryan Singer in check. He's a good director, but the aesthetics of this colorful team were really dull in the films he directed. Days Of Future Past may be a our first real X-Men film. The previous have only breezed the surface of the mythos, and if you know the comics, X-Men is heavy stuff and deserve an epic portrayal.
MovieTheaterLad - 10/30/2012, 3:41 PM
@Luis75

That's funny considering how successful First Class was both financially and critically!
YoungThanos - 10/30/2012, 3:43 PM
BOOOOOO! Singer is a horrible comic book director, if the franchise's continuity wasn't ruined before it will be now. I'll just wait for the day that Marvel gets back what there's.

P.S. @CaptainObvious nice try but if you don't like the Marvel Studious revolution then don't read it..
BlueDemon - 10/30/2012, 3:43 PM
Good but c'mon Bryan Singer let's have waaaay more action this time!!!
Vence - 10/30/2012, 3:43 PM
Im excited.
Spidey31 - 10/30/2012, 3:44 PM
Vaughn is producing, singer produced FC they're just pretty much switching sides.
Spectre94 - 10/30/2012, 3:44 PM
Awesome! The X-Men franchise needs Singer back, so I hope he can save it. First Class was good, but missed the directoral style of Singer
SpideyQuad - 10/30/2012, 3:45 PM
Well, I certainly hope he has progressed past those stupid leather costumes. I want to see the real X-Men this time around. And Fix the continuity, this is the perfect time an excuse with "Days of Future Past" so don't blow it.
YoungThanos - 10/30/2012, 3:45 PM
@MovieTheaterLad, First Class bombed domestically. The Foreign box office is what saved it. And most critics that did like it still had the same problems with it that most Comic book fans had. So nice try.
CaptainObvious - 10/30/2012, 3:45 PM
@UltimaRex- You'd be surprised.

@YoungThanos- Wow. You just assumed I don't like the Marvel "Revolution." I like what Marvel is doing and I like there movies. But I'm not some ass-kisser who blindly accepts whatever is thrown at them and is unable to allow any legitimate criticisms.
deamon - 10/30/2012, 3:46 PM
YEAH!!!
X-Men 2 was best of all x-movies.
ATrueHero1987 - 10/30/2012, 3:47 PM
All I want is no more continuity problems, do more justice for some of the characters, and hopefully Mr. Sinister and Apocalyspe done RIGHT in future films.
PantherX - 10/30/2012, 3:47 PM
@UltimaRex Challenge accepted.
YoungThanos - 10/30/2012, 3:47 PM
Wait! What do I care I'll be watching Hobbit 3 that weekend anyway. Screw Fox and their lame @ss continuity!
UniBeam11 - 10/30/2012, 3:52 PM
I hate to be a broken record but C'mon Fox, give it up already, let the X-Men go home
Swiftsword777 - 10/30/2012, 3:55 PM
Not sure how I feel about this but singer just does not do it for me.X-men for me was A bit OVER RATED and i dont think he handles action to well.WHY HIM? X2 was great but I just dont understand for the life of me why he had lady deathstike kicking the living SHITE out of wolvie I mean the guy is a very skilled fighter but if i didnt know who wolvie was and I just went to see the movie I would just have thought he was a guy who cant fight but has claws and is saved because he can heal him self and also more than half the actors were miscast in thier roles... SMH thanks Singer.Superman returns LOL dont get me started.
Spidey31 - 10/30/2012, 3:55 PM
I'm being cautios though
SpideyQuad - 10/30/2012, 3:56 PM
Captainiobvious, of course you are. Obviously you are Canadian and all Canadians fit that description.
marantaz - 10/30/2012, 3:56 PM
Captain Obvious said it all... obviously.

Waiting for a title change... "Out of the Closet" or "Back to the Future" or "X-Men - What Time Is It"... nothing original here.

How can Colussus be in it when he was a teen in the last movie? Oh, of course, time jumps, flashbacks, whatever, yeah yeah yeah....
YoungThanos - 10/30/2012, 3:57 PM
@CaptainObvious, by ass-kisser do you mean Millar and Donor who's done all be get on there knees when begging for Marvels help at the "shared" universe?

Because if you're talking about fans that could only describe FOX's followers at this point.
MisterMagurlypse - 10/30/2012, 3:57 PM
OK guys let's give him another chance and maybe he'll get $hit straighten back around. I'm not to happy about this, but let's see. BTW, X-Men are my favorite comics and have been for 25 years, so it's not like I REALLY don't care what happens. I Do!!
deamon - 10/30/2012, 3:57 PM
Lady Deathstrike kicked Logan ass in comic and cartoon too.
nowtheresaBATman - 10/30/2012, 4:00 PM
When I saw the article the other day about the rumoured sighting of Famke Janssen on the set of The Wolverine I instantly thought great MORE Bryan Singer poison! & almost puked Now this news...

Singers X movies were good but not great - 10yrs ago - I find them unwatchable today.
DrRockso - 10/30/2012, 4:02 PM
Shit is going down today, I love it!
wolverinesfury - 10/30/2012, 4:02 PM
This day is a great day of you are a nerd!
CaptainObvious - 10/30/2012, 4:04 PM
@SpideyQuad- Michigan, actually.

@YoungThanos- Millar was brought in as a creative consultant. Studios hire people like that all the time. By the way, who cares if it's a shared universe? Fox only has the Fantastic Four and X-Men and it's obvious they won't ever be put together. So why make a big deal out of characters sharing the same universe when they are all on the same team?
MisterMagurlypse - 10/30/2012, 4:05 PM
I see the word Apocalyptic and so help me, I can't help but think of the big A himself. I know he hasn't nothing to do with DOFP, but God I want to see him sooooo bad. Soooo bad.
comicNERD1031 - 10/30/2012, 4:05 PM
2nd best news of the week! I'm glad he's back behind the camera. He has two amazing CBMs under his belt.

I'll forgive him for Superman Returns if he corrects the timeline. Fair trade?
nowtheresaBATman - 10/30/2012, 4:05 PM
Singer needs a 1-way ticket into the SIEGE PERILOUS
PirateOpossum - 10/30/2012, 4:07 PM

Shadow137 - 10/30/2012, 4:11 PM
WHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY???????????!!!!!!

We believed in you Vaughn and you dropped out of an X-men film again. Now Singer is back, ugh.
samster10001 - 10/30/2012, 4:15 PM
This is the worst [frick]ing news of the day. Besides the east cost storm. I can't believe people actually think the mediocrity of X2 warrants this shithole director the chance to continually [frick] up the xmen. My God!!!!
This is really not good and I have officially given up hope of there ever being a good xmen movie again. Phuck fox, phuck singer, phuck vaughn, and phuck the xmen on film.
GUNSMITH - 10/30/2012, 4:16 PM
SINGER---REDEEM THYSELF FROM THAT CRAP SUPERMAN FILM.
Bane2099 - 10/30/2012, 4:21 PM
Heres to hoping we get a honest adaptation of DOFP if they are describing it as " apocolyptic " and " X-men meets Terminator "
beane2099 - 10/30/2012, 4:25 PM
And I will be seeing the X Men franchise later. He's the father of the era of CBM's. He deserves that respect. But I don't want to see another X Men film from him (Superman Returns still leaves a bad taste in my mouth).
mrexcellent - 10/30/2012, 4:32 PM
I'm not sure why Singer went with the leather costumes for the first 3 movies. The landscape for superhero movies was kind of non-existant at that point. You had Batman movies, a couple of miss fires like the 90s Captain America and the unreleased Fantastic Four movie. Sam Raimi even directed a movie called "The Shadow" that had some success to it. There were cult classics like Spawn, and some more main stream hits like Blade. Then came Singer's X-Men, then Spider-man, etc. Spider-man gets a lot of credit for launching the first major wave of superhero films in the 2000s, but I'd say it was Singer's X-Men that really set the stage for that bunch of movies. Point is, when Singer's X-Men movies came out, it was anyone's guess as to how close you could actually get to using a live action version of a comic book costume, especially when dealing with costumes as colorful as those found in the X-Men comics. If Singer is to blame for the costumes, so be it, but he's clearly changed his mind by now. Hear me out.

Vaughn may have directed XMFC, but he was going off of a story that Singer penned. Singer didn't just pen the story though, he also produced it and was part of the team that selected Vaughn to bring his vision to life. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for Matthew Vaughn, because his directorial style definitely shined through, and he made a hell of a movie in such a short period of time (11 months I think). If not for him, XMFC wouldn't have been the same. All I'm saying is that First Class is very much Brian Singer's baby too, and it doesn't seem that he's always given credit for that.

Both Singer and Vaughn collaborated extensively on this project, and both of them agreed to using the aesthetic that was used in XMFC. Whether or not it was Vaughn's idea to give the film a 1960s James Bond-esque feel, he had Singer's uninhibited approval. The colorful costume designs we got with that film, were definietly a part of that move. So,

that being said, I do think the leather costumes will show up again, since there will be some time jumping in the upcoming movie, but there's a very good chance that the colorful costumes from First Class will still be used as well.
Screwger - 10/30/2012, 4:35 PM
Am I the only one who thinks that Singer returnes(returned by Fox) because of his relation with the original cast? Honestly, I think Vaughn did better job with FC then Singer with the X1 & X2. Take away Wolverine from the X1& X2 and see what will happen ( the ass'boring shit will be dropped to the face of the audience ). Then, take away Xavier from FC and it will be still solid Magneto Revenge movie( damn, you can drop the whole team and it will be still good).
126thst - 10/30/2012, 4:37 PM
I was hoping for Rian Johnson. Looper was great. He did time travel proper.
