UPDATE: Will STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Be The Last Time We See Zachary Quinto As Spock?

Quinto, who plays Spock in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek and next summer's sequel, reveals that he would like his career to go in a different direction and suggests that his association with certain roles such as the popular Vulcan is "coming to an end".

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, actor Zachary Quinto talks about his career and some of his more recognizable roles. He has previously played the serial killer 'Sylar' on NBC's Heroes, and is currently playing another serial killer on FX's American Horror Story. After being associated with a certain type of role, Quinto now says that he wants his career to "go in a different direction" after next summer's Star Trek Into Darkness, in which he reprises his role as Spock from J.J. Abrams' 2009 reboot. In the following quote, Quinto also suggests that he may not play Spock in future Trek movies after Into Darkness.

“It’s like an era of association with certain roles – a specific part like Spock, or a kind of part, like Sylar — is coming to an end,” he says.

A third Star Trek movie from J.J. Abrams has yet to be officially confirmed, although writer/producer Damon Lindelof has previously stated that a third film was being discussed. Additionally, all of the main cast members from the first movie were signed on for two sequels as of June 2008. While Quinto isn't exactly saying that he won't play Spock anymore, his comment on his association with a specific part like the Vulcan "coming to an end" is rather intriguing, especially since he's signed on to reprise the role again for another movie. In fact, it would be surprising that we won't see Quinto's Spock again for at least one more film (unless he dies in Star Trek Into Darkness). What do you think of what Quinto's comments?

Star Trek Into Darkness also stars Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and Alice Eve. The film is set to hit theaters May 17th, 2013. We recently learned that not only will we be getting the first trailer next month with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, but a nine-minute preview will be shown with IMAX 3D screenings of the Peter Jackson film.

UPDATE: Quinto has taken to his Twitter account to address this report. Apparently, his quote about no longer being associated with specific parts was taken out of context.

No I need him as Spock! The Spirk ship must keep sailing and it wont if he leaves!
DarkArts - 11/18/2012, 11:26 AM
Hopefully it is the last we see of Kirk the illegitimate Captain and gay Spock and the whole Teen Star Trek crap we saw in the 1st one.
Abrams Trek was a nice Teens in Space flick but a horrible Star Trek film.
BlackFlash - 11/18/2012, 11:28 AM
Zachary I would stick with Star Trek because there isn't much coming your way.
zachman2013 - 11/18/2012, 11:29 AM
star trek sucks period. The 2009 film was only ok. Star Wars is the shit.
DioFoRio - 11/18/2012, 11:33 AM
@Yoss...yeah he is and if you haven't been watching it...you're missing out man. Shits good.
nld3 - 11/18/2012, 11:35 AM
That's what happens when you take forever to make sequels. The actors become bigger stars with bigger ego's. Quinto did an ok Spock, but not like Nimoy. I'm sure they can find another actor to do just as well if not better.
DrDoom - 11/18/2012, 11:36 AM
His quote seems to be more implication than anything.
DrRockso - 11/18/2012, 11:40 AM
It's gay dudes like him that make me want to [frick] a guy
SoulAllFlush - 11/18/2012, 11:40 AM
Signing up for a Star Trek film when you're not willing to play that character for, well, ages. That's just low.

So much for a reboot.
Dragonpiece - 11/18/2012, 11:44 AM
As long as J.J Abrams plans it out well, then sure, die. I'd rather someone who doesn't want to do the role to know not do it at all.
Facade - 11/18/2012, 11:44 AM
In other words, "can I hear a better contract offer?!"
Parker2017 - 11/18/2012, 11:47 AM
I think you are looking at things that don't exist. It sounded like he uses just a few roles that he feels that are not as exciting, and its fine and all. People DO lose interest in things, He still probley will do Spok for a few films. He's more known as Syler if anything. also what does him being Gay have to do with anything?
maxxgone - 11/18/2012, 11:47 AM
you know, guys like this [frick]ing baffle me...they get a 1 in 6 billion chance that is unquestionably fueled by the fans. and then immediately start bashing it & wanna seperate themselves from the role thats gonna pay his rent FOREVER.

im not saying he owes it to anyone to play spock forever, but the 2nd [frick]ing film hasnt even come out yet & he's ready to bolt. [frick] him. re-cast for the future. spock is not one of those irreplaceable roles.
nld3 - 11/18/2012, 11:49 AM
Quinto is the product of internet fanboys lobbying. He only got the Spock role due to the Heroes TV show fans lobbying for him to get it.
thewonderer - 11/18/2012, 11:50 AM
Why in the holy mother of [frick] are people pointin out hes gay?

It's like going that straight Chris Evans is a good actor. No one says straight

So shut the [frick] up with this gay nonsense
phenomenon - 11/18/2012, 11:54 AM
I allways get sick to the stomach whem I hear an actor... speaking out, that he wants to do more shake-spear in the park..... star trek.... has been and is a classic, legend or whatever you want to call it , series/movie..... to be an actor in this kind of movie...and then whining about it....is an insult to everybody who appreciates this kind of movies.... if you want to do more serious acting.... than give us a spock, where we will forget the name of leonard nimoy.....than you will do something epic acting!!
soberchimera - 11/18/2012, 11:54 AM
He probably signed a contract for three movies, so he might be legally obligated to do a third.
nld3 - 11/18/2012, 11:55 AM
The Lobbying got him noticed by Abrams & co. And put him at the top of the list. Then they saw he had this tv following & they figured what have we got to lose this dude has a ton of fans.
Wingding - 11/18/2012, 12:00 PM
At least make a trilogy with him
SugarYumYum - 11/18/2012, 12:07 PM
@MARVELPSYCHO79: Yeah, pretty tired of this happening. It's understandable but annoying. If you're that good of an actor then you don't have to worry about typecasting or only being known for that one big role you have in that one big popular series/franchise. Harrison Ford, Johnny Depp, SLJ and RDJ do it and manage to both be known as their own person and for the roles they play. If you're talented and can bring something to each role you play then it's not a problem.

In his defense though, it doesn't sound like he wants out after the nest one sounds more like he'll be careful of taking recurring character roles in the future. Pretty sure he'll continue playing Spock until this particular run ends and they reboot/recast.
DioFoRio - 11/18/2012, 12:18 PM
@Yoss...yeah dude ..This season is only missing a hot readhead like the last. But this seasons story is pretty fun.
I have missed every episode of Sunny this year : ( And I've heard nothing but good things. I smell a marathon a coming!
ClarkWayne91 - 11/18/2012, 12:18 PM
Star wars is better anyway.

TIME FOR AN ASIAN SPOCK

Joe6Pack74 - 11/18/2012, 12:27 PM
Sorry Quinto has no say in this. Once you go Spock you can't go back.
LP4 - 11/18/2012, 12:36 PM
[frick] Quinto, recast the role if needed. He's an asshole. He never should have signed on for a big franchise like this if he had zero intention of continuing.

Then again, this is also the fault of Abrams and crew for stalling this film for FOUR [frick]ING YEARS. Maybe had they not stalled the project this long, Quinto would be less likely to quit.

Nomis1800 - 11/18/2012, 1:10 PM
Of course he doesn't want to do this in multiple films. But the time between the previous Star Trek and this one.. I guess we'll be some years further when it comes to the third ;) I'm sure he won't die in this and that he will return in ST3. Just not more than that. And that should be fine I think, I think JJ could make a really good trilogy out of the first film. :D
SuperSomething616 - 11/18/2012, 1:15 PM
2 films under his belt is hardly the same as playing a character for 3 series, 7 films (in 1 your character was actually killed off but then brought back in the next) and numerous guest spots on the spin off/sequel series...

Get over yourself man and just enjoy what you got and enjoy the work...
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 11/18/2012, 1:15 PM
That would be stupid. Nuff said
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 11/18/2012, 1:20 PM
Meh. He was okay, I mean he was cool. But like Edward Norton, he's easily replaced. Besides, his Spock looked a little flamboyant with his big eyes, I don't know, maybe Nimoy is just too man to be replaced.

Get Channing Tatum or Nic Cage to play Spock in sequels.
maxleresistant - 11/18/2012, 1:22 PM
I think everybody ils misunderstanding what he said. IMO he just meant that he doesn't want to play roles that get stuck to him. So tes after the end of his contract he will probably not play spock anymore.
Ichaos - 11/18/2012, 1:29 PM
@earzmundo Gay means happy. It doesn't mean sucks.
Ichaos - 11/18/2012, 1:30 PM
@TheGambitFreak Are you bloody insane??? Nic cage as Spock??
TheDesertGorilla - 11/18/2012, 1:40 PM
Shit Spock.

Alaba - 11/18/2012, 2:22 PM
He can quit! Abrams will replace him with his identical twin! He starred as a Vulcan in Trek 2009.
exodus147 - 11/18/2012, 3:02 PM
Stupid ingrates. Why sign on to an iconic character like Spock and have no intention of doing more than a couple movies?

By the way loved you in that other movie you did besides Star Trek....Oh wait...you've done nothing...
Vapes - 11/18/2012, 3:12 PM
Yeah, good luck with that.
