New Story Details For Legendary Pictures' GODZILLA Reboot Emerge

With production beginning this March, some new details on Legendary Pictures' Godzilla reboot have emerged, revealing that it's "way different" from the original movies and that we can expect more than one giant monster will be featured.

This week has seen quite a bit of news related to Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' reboot of the Godzilla franchise, which will begin filming in March. Frank Darabont (The Walking Dead, The Shawshank Redemption) was brought on board to finalize the script, which was previously worked on by Iron Man 3's Drew Pearce and The Dark Knight's David S. Goyer, among others. Then, it was confirmed that two of the film's producers left the project. Additionally, the studio is reportedly eying Henry Cavill (Man Of Steel), Scoot McNairy (Killing Them Softly) and Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men: First Class) to take the lead role after Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises) turned down the offer. Now, via Chud, we have some potential story details for Godzilla. According to the site's source, WB's promotional arm just wrapped a webinar on their upcoming slate, and that the following details for director Gareth Edwards' "realistic" take on the legendary monster were "100% confirmed" and in the movie's pre-Darabont script.

-The film will feature more than one monster, confirming that two new monsters will also be wreaking havoc – this in addition to the big green guy.

-Warner Bros. made it clear that their interpretation of the material “follows the story of a solider” and is “way different” than the Toho Godzilla films.


Very interesting. We previously heard that Godzilla will be taking on one giant monster in the film, but it looks like we can now expect him to battle two. Which creatures would you like to see Gojira fight in his next big screen outing? Many thanks to CBM's @Marvel_Freshman for the heads up.

Hmm well I'll wait to see something like Pacific Rim to make a confident prediction but tbh this just sounds like a pointless extension trying to mimic the usual modern monster movies. Like I just don't get the point in Godzilla fighting monsters, while the story follows a soldier, what would the actual story follow? Like I guess it could work, but if this was cancelled right now I wouldn't care.

there is a Godzilla movie that sorta follows the journey of a Japanese soldier in WW2. A japanese officer and his squad on a remote pacific island come under attack from the US Marines, then when they are about to die a T-REX dinosaur (sorta) shows up and saves them. Then after the war a Atom bomb is detonated close to the island. Resulting in the creation of Godzilla.

Toho's movies focused on either journalist, scientist, a few normal civilians who are just along for the ride, crime officers, businessmen,etc. There are few films involving soldiers but they never solely keep a soldier at main center as there are always few other main characters as well in the mix.

Only how this would be different is if the human department focuses solely on the solider with other characters being just supports to keep the film moving along.

The question still remains is whether Godzilla will battle some of the monsters from the TOHO films, or totally new creations.

Whoever plays the soldier and whatever storyline they give him im sure most people will want his scenes to hurry the [frick] up and get back to the monster action

Im all for Godzilla fighting against other monsters. But i wouldnt mind seeing just Godzilla in the film.

Hope they focus on G more than the Soldier character.
I vote McNairy for the soldiers role. No need for big star. Godzilla is the star.

They should have Godzilla fightin' a couple monsters, and to focus on the soldier every now and then show a close up of him runnin' and lookin' back screamin'....well, maybe too much like the originals.

What are you people saying,how the [frick] can that work,just follow godzilla through the whole film and have some monster just pop up,where did this monster comes from? how do you split up fights between the monsters,is it just gonna be one big fight at the end and thts it,what is godzilla doing before the big fight? and why would gozilla fight it? he isnt protecting everyone he want to [frick] shit up himself,im sorry I never saw the shitty man in a power ranger suit japanese versions,but they looks [frick]ing lame,so I will stick to there idea of following a soldier n tht shit

makes sense that godzilla will be fighting other monsters, would have been silly if he was brought down by the military only other monster should trouble and harm godzilla and @Destroyer14 the soldier scene in godzilla vs ghidoraa may have been small but it was a good scene espeically when godzilla kills him

That's my fear.

While everyone tends to cheer Gareth Edwards for making Monsters a "character driven drama that oh so cleverly tricked the creature feature loving yokels into watching it" they tend to forget that his characters were both terrible. And it wasn't just the acting, they were just terribly written. Maybe they were meant to be terrible, but I wouldn't hedge my bets.

Luckily he's not writing. Monsters was beautiful, beautiful eye candy. Edwards has an eye for shots and iconic imagery.

I just hope he keeps his paws off the script.

All of the Toho films had human stars, although the stories always revolved around Godzilla. Look at the U.S. version of the original KING OF THE MONSTERS with Raymond Burr. However, saying it is going to be "way different" than the Toho films can mean a lot of different things. I would describe TriStar's FRAUDZILLA as being "way different" than the Toho films, but NOT in a good way! Hopefully, their meaning of "way different" is cutting back on some of the campier elements of the Toho films by making it more realistic. They should stay true to Godzilla's spirit, which is that he is an indestructible force of nature, not some wimpy lizard who runs away from the military and hides in the sewers. Let's see Godzilla trash some cities and kick some monster butt this time!!

The majority of the Godzilla movies were thematically similar:

First half of movie-lotsa talkin'.
Last half-hour-Lotsa monster fightin'.

All I wanna know is how I can be an extra in this,for it is a lifetime goal to be a panicked civilian running in terror from a giant atomic flame-spewing lizard on screen.

I'm sure @Destroyer14 feels the same way..lol

I always thought one of the best things to do is mix a Godzilla script with an action movie script. As hokey as Final Wars was, I still think it's one of the best Godzilla movies for that very reason (despite the big G's minimal screen time). But I like this angle. It has kind of been done though. The more recent Godzilla X Mecha Godzilla (along with the sequel) and Giant Monsters All Out Attack (What a title) explored the soldier aspect in one shape or another. I really hope they don't include a reporter. I think a reporter has been a main character in almost every Godzilla flick since the first one. Enough with the reporters.

Oh, and as for monsters, for some reason I always wanted to see Godzilla fight a giant shark. Not as his main enemy, but in a brief underwater battle as way of introducing him in the movie. But I'd be okay with at least one brand new beastie.

If the older films are based around people too then why are people saying it should just follow godzilla since hes basicly the star of the movie lol its always gonna follow one person or two,I just dont see how you can have two monsters in one film and make it work without making excuses up to make them fight n stuff,you cant really compare it to anything like transformers because at least that made sense,good robots have to fight bad robots to save the day lol pacific rim would probably be close to this but yeah thats the actually humans fighting the monsters

Movie can focus on Godzilla just like King Kong focused on King Kong. Ok the human characters were still there but Kong was still the main star.

Godzilla can do the same. Just in his own way.

A little creativity goes a long way. In 23 Godzilla films, the series has covered all kinds of genera and plots. I'm sure the writers can think of something to explain more than one monster.

I mean Jesus [frick], I might as well go on a similar dipshit rant on every superhero movie that includes more than one superpowered human.
