UPDATE: First Set Photos From GODZILLA Now Online

They will kill this film for me if they use a giant lizard again. i also do not want to see a massive dump of cgi. I think it ruins the acting for me.

Thought Godzilla is supposed to be a "giant lizard". And not a dinosaur like in the previous Hollywood remake.

just want to see godzilla wrecking shit up, using his atomic breath, fighting other monsters, not the recycled, repetitive and boring U.S military. I'll cause a riot in the cinema if the military take down godzilla in the film, should never ever happen

Toho's Godzilla is a dinosaur. But a different kind.


Toho's Godzilla is a variation mixture of different dinosaurs, the icon doesn't have a particular specific saurian relation to any obvious or common dinosaur. And due to the times back then and the lacking of proper knowledge on dinosaurs, Godzilla was a dinosaurian creature that walked upright. (Just a bit of extra info)

@Seejay Godzilla has always been presented as a prehistoric creature, the orginal toho japanese film established that. It was the 1998 crapfest zilla, which established that godzilla was orginally a [frick]ing iguana. The origin that godzilla is prehistoric dinosaur/creature is far better than a mutated lizard.

So happy this doesn't take place in America.

I think Giant monster movies are going to be the new Hollywood trend now. CBM's will still have there moments but they will be sharing the spotlight with movies like Godzilla, Power Rangers, Gundam and shit like that.

I thought the first movie design of Godzilla was actually pretty good. The movie just sucked.

Controlling for 1) special effects quality (which is really all Sony's pic had going for it) 2) film budgets and 3) the vicissitudes of Japanese vs American film making sensibilities, the fundamental difference between Toho and Sony's Godzillas is that Toho's Godzilla was a force of nature whereas Sony's Godzilla was a freak of nature (Born pregnant?? Really?). Toho's Godzilla incorporated themes like World War II, Pollution, the Cold War, and biological warfare (and occasional alien invasions of course) whereas Sony's Godzilla incorporated half the cast of the Simpsons, a running Siskel & Ebert gag, and Jurassic Park's velociraptors.

To be honest, if Sony had called their movie anything but Godzilla or at least kept the look of the creature the same, no one would have kicked up a fuss. But the fact is, all they wanted was the name. What Sony did was akin making a James Bond film but instead of a good looking British ladies man, we get a middle aged pot bellied Bostonian and then defending that choice by saying "Well Boston is NEW England so that's sort of the same thing right?". Feel free to use your internet colloquialisms like "butt hurt" or "fanboy" or whatever tickles your fancy.

You've got it backwards. In the original Japanese version, Godzilla was an ancient dinosaur who survived the extinction and was awoken by the H-Bomb. The 1998 version had Godzilla as a mutated iguana (yeah...).

And the 1998 Godzilla was not a mutated iguana. It didn't say what it was. It implied that the nuclear testing at Bikini Atol and subsequent fallout was responsible. By the way, a nuclear origin was at the insistence of Toho. So unless you're going to have a nuke crack open the ocean floor and Godzilla come swimming out, I don't know how else to do it.

There's not a way to do it that's not retarded in other words. That's why Emmerich chose to keep it vague.
