Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura Open To A TRANSFORMERS/G.I. JOE Crossover Film

Bonaventura, who produces Paramount's two big Hasbro franchises G.I. Joe and Transformers, shares his thoughts on a possible crossover film a la Marvel's The Avengers.

Paramount Pictures and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura are involved with Hasbro's two big movie franchises, Transformers and G.I. Joe. The former currently has three films (with a fourth on the way), while the latter just released its second installment, Retaliation. The two previously crossed over in comic book form, and with the success of Marvel's "shared universe" approach for The Avengers (thus influencing other studios to make similar moves, such as Fox for X-Men/Fantastic Four and possibly Warner Bros. for Justice League), could we see the Joes appear on the big screen alongside the Transformers? In an interview with Cinema Blend, Bonaventura shares his thoughts on the idea. He sounds hesitant about taking on such a film due to both mythologies being "so rich", but he then admits that he'd be open to it if the right story came along.

"I guess it’s possible. I don’t know. I think I probably at this moment, I resist it. I don’t know necessarily why, but I just think there’s so much that’s so rich in the mythologies that I don’t think they need to draw from the other. I think, I didn’t rule it out for me and I think those things have somehow for me, sort of in the past, they made me feel like a little bit cynical exercises in just drawing money out of something. It’s not to say you couldn’t do it well, but both these properties have such rich mythologies with so many characters, that you could go a lot of movies before you start running out of ideas of what to do. But it’s not to say, if we found the right… I’d hate to set out to do that, but if I heard a story where we went, “Oh my God…,” I could see a story right now about machination, machination of war and that could lead you sort of intrinsically to a Transformer. I think in general, Marvel is doing it within their own universe, right? And so it doesn’t feel gimmicky in that way. I think that’s what I would really try to resist."

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is in theaters now; Transformers 4 is set to be released June 27th, 2014. Would you like to see a crossover between the two franchises?

BWAHAHAHAAAAA!
SuperDude001 - 3/29/2013, 3:42 PM
I would've been open to it if both franchises hadn't already established storylines that involved worldwide panic. Like I can't imagine a way they could explain one wasn't in the other before a crossover.
ForeverPowerful - 3/29/2013, 3:45 PM
Get Chu to do another Joe film to establish a franchise with no ties to Rise, and get Bays new trilogy going, I could see this. Transformers is fun to watch (in my opinion) and Retaliation is apparently dumb fun. We'll see.
ShogunNevets - 3/29/2013, 3:46 PM
People who don't read comics (unfortunately many) would see it as an Avengers knock off which is also unfortunate. But as long as Michael Gay is only needed for designs and not directing, writing, etc. It could be a great movie, I'd watch.
ShogunNevets - 3/29/2013, 3:47 PM
@Superdude001 you have a good point with their before worldwide crisis'
SomTingWong - 3/29/2013, 3:51 PM
I'd rather see terminator vs. robocop
supermarioworldE - 3/29/2013, 3:51 PM
Wouldn't the metal eating nanomites be a clear disadvantage for the Transformers?
comicle199 - 3/29/2013, 3:52 PM
personally i would love to see gi joe and transformers crossover but thats it, thats the line drawn, no my little pony,no action man and no transformers meets hungry hungry hippoes if your gonna do it you cant have a shared universe like marvel you dont have enough good material
comicle199 - 3/29/2013, 3:54 PM

MrMartinMarvel - 3/29/2013, 3:56 PM
Good thing I don't care.
CaptainObvious - 3/29/2013, 4:04 PM
I really wish I could care about either one of these franchises.
BboiBlack - 3/29/2013, 4:16 PM
Good to see these producers at have at least a thought before selling their entire line on the premise of crossover after cross over gimmick. IronMan 2 with it's constant look captain america is coming, look thor is coming...fan boys aren't we cool...ugh.
omg ANOTHER PIECE OF ARMOR, BUT IT'S CALLED THE HULK BUSTER SO IT'S THE COOLEST ONE YET.
It's not just guardians of the galaxy, we know no one cares, but they might cross over into avengers so make sure to check it out!!!
#whatever.
InfiniteMonkey - 3/29/2013, 4:18 PM

ShogunNevets - 3/29/2013, 4:18 PM

THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 3/29/2013, 4:19 PM

PsyGuy - 3/29/2013, 4:35 PM
OH GOD, NO
beane2099 - 3/29/2013, 4:50 PM
Problem is, once you cross those franchises, there's no going back. It'd basically be like the Transformers movies are now, but with GI Joe in place of the current cast of characters. It's not like the Avengers where they could conceivably go off on their own and have their own adventures. I don't know. That's just how I feel about it.
epitaz - 3/29/2013, 4:55 PM
Wasn't Disney in talks a few months back to buy Hasbro? If that happens then who knows. Disney has done alright with their Marvel properties and I haven't seen or read of Marvel crossing over with Star Wars so if they do buy Hasbro I don't think I see Transformers and Joe crossing over unless they have a really good idea.
AC1 - 3/29/2013, 4:56 PM
Go for it. I mean, who really gives a shit at this point, right? Hey, at least if this fails (which I hope for humanity's sake it would) maybe they'd stop making movies for either toy line?
TerminalVoyd - 3/29/2013, 5:19 PM
Well, it wasn't so bad under Marvel (Hell, even Spider-Man made a came in Transformers). The Dreamwave version was fine, though I haven't checked out the Devil's Due take on it. The only possible issue (other than money) is logic. And really, just one piece of it.

Transformers on Earth? A big deal. I can't imagine a scenario where the Joe team wouldn't be dispatched or COBRA wouldn't make contact with Decepticons, at least after the second TF movie. It's just a hard thing to hand wave away. The NEST team were basically surrogate Joes at that point.

You'd have to fudge the timeline a little if you really wanted to make both movie continuities happen AND acknowledge anything that happened in the solo films (namely Dark of the Moon). Conversely, you could ignore all that and just blow stuff up real good (which is basically where both series are at right now).
TheOneAboveAll - 3/29/2013, 5:23 PM
@LEVI You know what?

I want DC VS Marvel VS Star Wars VS Star Trek VS Nintendo VS GI JOE VS Transformers VS Freddy VS Jason VS Ash VS Dredd VS Hellboy VS Spawn VS Terminator VS Alien VS Predator VS Ghostbusters VS Gears from GEARS OF WAR VS Master Chief VS Indiana Jones VS Mickey Mouse and the gang VS Looney Tunes VS 92 Dream Team VS Harry Potter VS Them blue mutha[frick]ers from Avatar VS Eminem.

THAT WOULD BE [frick]ING AWESOME!!!!!!!!
NeoBaggins - 3/29/2013, 5:26 PM
Wouldnt be the first time they crossed over. Van Damm's Guile was actually supposed to be a Joe in The street fighter movie.

HeadPool420 - 3/29/2013, 5:46 PM
Didn't they already do that in the 3rd Transformers movie near the end? The military kicked more ass then the Autobots!
dracula - 3/29/2013, 5:52 PM
this would be cool if they rebooted both series and it wasnt a crossover with to crappy film series
1ncredibleJ0C - 3/29/2013, 5:58 PM
i can picture this on all types of levels transformers and gi Joe in the same movie i would like it a whole bunch [frick] i say do it go for it
Pharaoh - 3/29/2013, 5:58 PM
@superdude it's not exactly hard is it, who's to say they aren't in a shared universe during the first 3 Transformers movies, we focused on just two human groups in those movies so while Witwicky n the army were in Cairo who's to say G.I Joe wasn't handling business in NY n when the Transformers were in NY in T3 GI Joe was in Tokyo dealing with Decepticons there or some other global threat

marvel72 - 3/29/2013, 6:27 PM
its the only way a gi.joe film will make a billion at the box office is if they team up with transformers.
SigmaCenturion - 3/29/2013, 6:31 PM
Hell Yeah if it is just the joes and transformers and not the tag on pieces of shit for the transformer's series.
TheGodOfMischief - 3/29/2013, 6:35 PM
The new G.I.Joe movie was fun! Waaaaaayyy better than Rise!
A Crossover like this would be amazing!
ForeverPowerful - 3/29/2013, 6:45 PM
Id love to see Snake Eyes running up the leg of a Decepticon and chopping off its arm, doing a backflip, and Optimus blowing it in half as Snake lightly lands on the ground.
Tainted87 - 3/29/2013, 6:45 PM
Might as well just make a PG-13 Power Rangers movie and call it even.
NeoBaggins - 3/29/2013, 8:00 PM
Not a fan of this Joe series, but if they crossed it over with Transformers I'd watch it. TRANSFORMERS production values are light years ahead of the Joe movies and it would actually benefit from the quality upgrade. And I know it's popular to hate Bay, but I doubt Paramount would unload money on an unproven director.
YoungThanos - 3/29/2013, 8:09 PM
RELEASE WHAT YOU WANT HASBRO/PARAMOUNT. I'LL BE HOME THAT DAY.
tarZen - 3/29/2013, 8:13 PM
FreakingIntelligentRobertGriffin, if you combine (add) two negatives you get a bigger negative. You only get a positive if you multiply two negatives. Did you really go to school?

I thought people grow out of these two negatives is one positive jokes pretty quick.
Bread - 3/29/2013, 10:01 PM
It would be the biggest heap of shit in all of cinema... but then again, it might be so bad that it's good.
Bigred20 - 3/29/2013, 10:05 PM
yaaaaaaa.......NO
TheSuperguy - 3/29/2013, 10:20 PM

RPD - 3/29/2013, 11:19 PM
