I've never been a Trek fan, but I became after the reboot in 2009 and Star Trek: Into Darkness is one of the movies I want to see the most.

TyrantBoss: A threat to Earth has been the basis to many of the Star Trek movies: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (which Gene Roddenberry himself produced) and two of the better entries in the film series, Star Trek: The Voyage Home and Star Trek: First Contact. My guess is that the reasoning is the general tim audience is more easily invested in a threat to Earth.

However, in looking at this commercial, the question that came to my mind was: Doesn't 23rd century Earth have the equivalent of the FBI to track down terrorists? Having Captain Kirk do it is sort of like having the captain of an aircraft carrier track down Timothy McVeigh after he blew up the Federal Building in Oklahoma.
