Don Cheadle On The Potential Plot Of A WAR MACHINE Spin-Off Film

Iron Man 3's Don Cheadle talks about the possibility of War Machine getting his own spin-off film, revealing what the movie's plot was back when there were discussions to make it.

Back in 2010, a few months after the release of Iron Man 2, it was rumored that a spin-off film starring Don Cheadle's James Rhodes/War Machine was in the works at Marvel Studios. The actor later confirmed that the movie was in development, but since then, we haven't heard anything about the project until now. On this week's Empire Podcast, Cheadle dropped by to share this thoughts on where a War Machine movie and where it was heading plot-wise. He compares it to the first Iron Man film, saying that he would've been darker and "really realistic". “When we have talked about the [War Machine] spin-off, what the departure point might be for War Machine… [we've discussed that] it might be when he goes rogue, so to speak, and takes a mission that he believes he is morally responsible for but is against policy and does it anyway. What happens when he’s out there and he’s been dishonourably discharged but he still has the suit, or Tony makes him another suit?”

“And now he’s out there on his own too, but even worse than Tony, because now he’s a fugitive. Because if we wanted to do it, I think the best way to do it would be go darker, to take it and make it even more visceral. Sort of close to the first Iron Man, how it began. Really visceral and really realistic.”

Unlike Iron Man 3 co-stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle still has more Marvel movies on his contract. While a fourth Iron Man film is looking unlikely right now, he recently expressed interest in appearing in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier and/or 2015's The Avengers 2. Would you like to see a War Machine film starring Cheadle?

Iron Man 3 is out now in the UK, and will be released May 3rd in the US.

I have though that the only way for the Ironman franchise to continue is for Rhodey to take up the mantle of Ironman. It's happened before in the comics.

But is there any point to an Ironman movie without the RDJ factor?? Who is bigger (no s[racial slur]ing!) the character or the actor?
TonyChu - 4/26/2013, 7:05 AM
Put him in an Avengers West Coast or Secret Avengers movie.
MrSundayMovies - 4/26/2013, 7:05 AM
Sure I'd see it, I don't think it'd happen but I'd be up for up.
ParisSun - 4/26/2013, 7:06 AM
Marvel better do a Heroes For Hire or Black Panther movie befor a War Machine movie.
Thegeekygurl - 4/26/2013, 7:09 AM
Believe it when I see it only. Hollywood has a terrible record when it comes to Non-Whites as lead characters!

kenjim152 - 4/26/2013, 7:09 AM
After the piece of crap that IM3 is I seriously believe They will have z hard time try ing to bring IM back, and if RD Jr is not returning the franchises is losing a big part of it, so how can he believe a solo spin off war machine can actually happen? LoL
punkfusion - 4/26/2013, 7:09 AM
I could see an Iron Man 2.0 movie, base it off those comics. They were very war driven comics... and Rhodey as a character is awesome
drfate - 4/26/2013, 7:10 AM
meh. I don't need a War Machine movie. It was great to see him in IronMan, but I'd rather see Black Panther or Sub Mariner.

@Orphix,

"I have though that the only way for the Ironman franchise to continue is for Rhodey to take up the mantle of Ironman. It's happened before in the comics."

I agree. WHile I'm not married to any comic plots being using exactly the same way in the movies, it would actually make too much sense for Rhodey to continue on as Iron Man if Tony were to step back (and thus giving RDJ less stress on his body for the action sequences etc).

I said it elsewhere, but if they replace RDJ as Iron Man, I want them to go in a totally different direction rather than having someone do an impression of RDJ. Rhodey just makes perfect sense for that.
subzero1077 - 4/26/2013, 7:13 AM
Go for it!
Gorr - 4/26/2013, 7:14 AM
Iron patriot sucked balls. War Machine would be cool but will never happen. Also Terrence Howard was a much better Rhode!

"And since the majority of critics and audience members love IM3 so far I can guarantee another movie will be welcomed with open arms"

I save this quote, after 299 review like TDKR I want see if it will confirmed or denial.

Don Cheadle's a remarkable actor. First movie I saw him in, he played a French demolitions expert in Ocean's Eleven.

I think if he were working on his own, and not to the beat of another lead character AND actor, he could make Rhodey a stronger, more interesting character.
TheAbomination - 4/26/2013, 7:20 AM
I could see it happening someday.
113 - 4/26/2013, 7:22 AM
I'd LOVE solo film, and I really really want him in Avengers 2!

War Machine has always been such an awesome character.
kenjim152 - 4/26/2013, 7:25 AM
@Teabag what are u talking about? IM 1 has over 200 reviews on RT and Iron Man has just 50 so far!!!! How can it be the best reviewed if most critics have not seen it yet?????? ~~ LOL
ruadh - 4/26/2013, 7:27 AM
@ Tainted87

"Don Cheadle's a remarkable actor. First movie I saw him in, he played a French demolitions expert in Ocean's Eleven."

French?! You gotta check that accent again!

First time I saw him, where I took notice of him, was the ghetto-ish criminal in Out of Sight. The next thing he was totally different, and then I saw him as the british demolitions guy in Oceans... but yeah, great actor. I've still not gotten used to it not being Terence Howard though.
Fogs - 4/26/2013, 7:28 AM
Tonight! Some friends watched it in the midnight showing and said it's boss!

Yessssss!
scapegoatjones - 4/26/2013, 7:31 AM
@weneedrevelation

Jamie fuxing Foxx is terribad.
Rewatched Django again the other night. He was probably the worst actor in that movie. Just below Quentin himself.
Orphix - 4/26/2013, 7:32 AM
@ruadh

Having seen Oceans Eleven its kind of understandable where the confusion comes from.

I'm British and was never 100% sure what accent he was doing. :oP
Ocelot - 4/26/2013, 7:32 AM
after the way they shortchanged the character in Iron Man 3, I just cannot see this ever remotely happening
ChrisEl - 4/26/2013, 7:33 AM
All I care about is RDJ returning for Avengers 2, and maybe even Avengers 3.
GodzillaKart - 4/26/2013, 7:34 AM
Not sure I would be excited about a War Machine movie. I've never been crazy about Cheadle in the role. Always preferred Howard.
GodzillaKart - 4/26/2013, 7:35 AM
After all the great reviews I've read about the RDJ/Cheadle chemistry in IM3, it might change my mind, though.
kenjim152 - 4/26/2013, 7:37 AM
@teabag u may be right dude, But 3/5 and 4/5 are just for average Good movies IM got 5/5 I insist IM 3 is a Good popcorn flick, but the fatigue of the franchise is more than visible.
jlabatman - 4/26/2013, 7:39 AM
I like the Iron Patriot as Rhodey instead of Osborn, makes more sense! You could never get Osborn in an IM suit in the movies without bringing Spidey into the MCU. Reaaly like the direction the went with that, but a solo film without RDJ would just suck!
kenjim152 - 4/26/2013, 7:45 AM
@justanotherloki Man u r an a$$¥£le y are u talking about the plot!!!!! U should be bannedmany peoPle here have not seen the movie!!!
STOOPUDR - 4/26/2013, 7:46 AM
Ironman 4 starts with Tony retiring, a press conference maybe announcing that he is no longer Ironman. Make the movie about an enemy or a group of enemies trying to attack a suitless Tony and revolve the movie around Rhodey working as his body guard protecting as War Machine but losing and the armor getting destroyed and ultimately saving him as Ironman 2.0. End the movie with Tony having his answer does the suit make the man or the man make the suit. And its not the answer he wanted. However, have him get redeemed in later movies via cameo with him returning to the suit along with Steve (replaced by Bucky) in Avengers 3.
STOOPUDR - 4/26/2013, 7:49 AM
Never make an Ironman movie without RDJ, just make him a supporting character/ cameo for a few until the bug hits him again (true to the comics just like Stark did - he will want to wear the armor again some day), this way you can go on without him, without recasting. Just let Rhodey/ Cheadle keep his seat warm for him.
SUPERSHADOWBAT - 4/26/2013, 7:49 AM
I always liked James Rhodes, he's one of the oldest supporting characters in the Marvel universe. I think a War Machine movie could work, but I don't feel they fleshed out his character enough in the Iron Man films to warrant a film.
STOOPUDR - 4/26/2013, 7:50 AM
Gusto - Tony let him. He also uses it without Jarvis.
SigmaCenturion - 4/26/2013, 7:51 AM
Get someone else for Warmachine and maybe.
Tempo - 4/26/2013, 7:56 AM
I think there will be no RDJ in Iron Man 4,after Avenger 2 maybe there will be a recast and a new actor for Avengers 3 and Iron Man 4.
plasticman - 4/26/2013, 7:57 AM
So War Machine will be a one man A-Team movie?
