BOX OFFICE: Legendary Pictures' PACIFIC RIM Surpasses $300M Mark Worldwide

Pacific Rim crossed the $200M mark at the worldwide box office earlier this week, and now the Guillermo del Toro-directed science fiction film has already made it past $300M thanks to a stellar first seven days in China.

Legendary Pictures' Pacific Rim was released last week in China, and it opened to a record-breaking $45.2M debut. The Guillermo del Toro-directed has been struggling at the domestic box office, where it has currently earned a tepid $94.8M. With a $180-200M budget, many have been wondering if it will break even. Well, another step has been taken towards that as Pacific Rim has now surpassed the $300M line worldwide, and is sitting at $313.1M. As for its full seven-day opening in China, the sci-fi epic made $54.7M. A final total of $400M+ is now a good possibility; while it won't guarantee a sequel due to its hefty budget, it doesn't entirely rule it out. Do you want to see a follow-up to Pacific Rim?

I read that the budget is actually $190 million so, it should at least make $380 million to be a success.
anthonyEstark - 8/8/2013, 1:54 PM

I'm glad it didn't flop hard like some people were expecting, but tbh I really don't care about a sequel, especially if it is directed by GdT. Give me At the Mountains of Madness and JL Dark.
Durf - 8/8/2013, 1:55 PM
Great movie(best of the summer), glad to hear it's going to make $400 million plus like it should. Doesn't need a sequel though because it was pretty damn self contained
3DWitchHunt - 8/8/2013, 1:55 PM
Where's Jollem?
I bet he has something to say about this
AwesomeSauce - 8/8/2013, 1:56 PM

Hell has frozen over
BlackIceJoe - 8/8/2013, 1:57 PM
It's nice to see it doing well in China. I wonder if it will end up doing better in China over North America when it's done at the movie theaters.
Chewtoy - 8/8/2013, 1:57 PM
I'd be happy if the toys were more easy to find... but a sequel could be fun.
AvatarIII - 8/8/2013, 1:58 PM
@daemoon
I'd love to see Pactific rim too but Amen to JL Dark or AtMoM!
FilmsFan - 8/8/2013, 2:00 PM

AwesomeSauce - 8/8/2013, 2:05 PM

GUNSMITH - 8/8/2013, 2:10 PM
WE WANT A SEQUEL!!!! DON'T LET US WAIT LIKE WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR HELL BOY 3!
Mike89 - 8/8/2013, 2:11 PM
As i said before the movie doesnt need a sequel. Unless del toro comes back to direct a potential sequel then id say go for it.
exe - 8/8/2013, 2:12 PM
The sequel needs a stronger script. They have to hire better writers. The first one is AVERAGE as heck. Only thing it has going for it is the visuals. The dialogue is cliched' as hell and cringe-worthy as [frick].
CrimsonFlash - 8/8/2013, 2:20 PM
I really don't see how this movie needs a sequel. I really enjoyed it but it really seemed to end it. Not sure i'd like a "oh wait look at that we were wrong more monsters are here!" I'm happy its making some money though so similar movies can get made.

looking at you Gundam
Doughdzm - 8/8/2013, 2:22 PM
This movie was awful at best. Effects were good but the story was stolen from How High
CyberBishop - 8/8/2013, 2:25 PM
@Nomis.. That is f-ing cool!
Floke - 8/8/2013, 2:33 PM
It still haven't open in Sweden. If it becomes a succes in our big country, it will add several 100s of dollars into their pockets. Then in the sequel, Baltic Rim, the Scandinavian Scank will hump a few monsters before comitting suicide..
PanochaLibre - 8/8/2013, 2:33 PM
I thought this was the most fun I had at the theaters so far and it was the movie I was least excited about.
RaythBane - 8/8/2013, 2:34 PM
lol @ Josh You have no clue dude. Go suck a Kaiju's weiner

Flop...rofl
kknight - 8/8/2013, 2:37 PM
@Beto -- Totally agree with you man... Lol

Hope they make a sequel, this move was so awesome. Loved the robots, the story, the characters, the action, the script, just about everything about it.

GeekLegionofDoom - 8/8/2013, 2:41 PM
Good news .But after Marketing and after Cinema chains take a cut is still Prob over $100,000,000 from breaking even however
Doughdzm - 8/8/2013, 2:49 PM
@Beto look here the How High reference was joke. and Yes the movie did suck. Can you remember any of the robot names or the drivers. Which character was developed. Real Steel was a better Robot movie. This was trash. The writing sucked there was no emotional connection with any character and the scientist were cooky. Exception the father was pretty straightforward
Kyos - 8/8/2013, 2:51 PM
It was far from perfect, but it was alright. Make a sequel with the same visual qualities and a better script and it might end up being among my favourite movies!
DaVinci31 - 8/8/2013, 3:08 PM
You know what that means? :D

Starlight - 8/8/2013, 3:09 PM
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES !!!
charlie2094 - 8/8/2013, 3:13 PM
Everyone forgetting that they'll see only a very very small percentage of Chinas Box office? Will need to do at least $400 million, for a sequel to be a maybe.

Don't get the "other movies have made less" arguements. This cost $190 million, which means it needs to do at least $380 to make back it's budget (obviously only get roughly 50-60% of box office money) and then there's marketing and the such on top...then there's profit. Still got a ways to go really
YoungThanos - 8/8/2013, 3:13 PM
Hell yeah! 300M!

Suck on that Wolverine fans!!!!
kknight - 8/8/2013, 3:14 PM
@Beto -- I think MR Doughhead is getting defensive. Better watch out. LOL

RamonSuarez - 8/8/2013, 3:14 PM
The major problem Pacific Rim had was that none of the Kaiju were personalized. They were just generic behemoth monsters from another dimension who were expendable. They need to find a way to get the Jaegers to fight something like a Godzilla, Monster Zero, or Cthullu type entity for a final showdown.
JGAR - 8/8/2013, 3:17 PM
Godzilla will be and MAKE better hands down. :D
marvel72 - 8/8/2013, 3:22 PM
best film of the summer,i bet trollem will be along shortly to rip on iron man 3 because that's what he does knock marvel studios on any unrelated article.
charlie2094 - 8/8/2013, 3:24 PM
@YoungThanos

Err what? Wolverines already at $270 and is more recent, Pacific Rim opened almost a month ago whilst Wolverine still has quite a few counties to open up in, so should pass Pacific Rim quite easily. Not to mention Wolverine cost $70 million less, and has already surpassed Pacific Rim domestically and Pacific Rim has made a lot of that in china, where they won't see much of that money back.

Guess you just have something against people liking Wolverine.
FOOM - 8/8/2013, 3:29 PM
Great news. Seems the rest of the world has a much better take on what makes a decent movie than [frick]ing Americans. C With luck a Dredd sequel could still be in the works too. Enjoy Grown Ups 3 and 4 you bunch of retards.
