Bryan Singer Returning to the X-Men?

The director who helped launch the X-Men said that he likes to "trick audiences into thinking they're seeing fireworks" when he's really commenting on social issues.

Bryan Singer, the director of the first two installments of the X-Men franchise, said that he is ready to return to the property. At the South Korean Pusan International Film Festival, Singer said:

"I'm still looking to possibly returning to the X-Men franchise. I've been talking to Fox about it. I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast."

Singer said that he enjoys using the X-Men and science fiction to comment on important real-world issues:

"The excitement about working in science fiction and fantasy is — the stories, if they are good, are about the human condition."

	I don't know. He did make XM 1 and X2 which are great, but he did make Superman Returns and that wasn't faithful to the comics at all, but it was solid. I just don't know. 	Huh? How is he a sell out? Im sure we will be getting a whole host of comments about how Singer [frick]ed up the X Men because Wolverine wasn't wearing yellow [frick]ing banana spandex and all sorts of other pedantic crap. The dude made one very good and one excellent movie. Anyone that claims to be an X Men fan, that is, actually reads comics and not just looks at the pictures, should know that the X Men were always about reflecting the injustices of society and as Singer says, the human condition. Sure they also had awesome action and stuff and maybe he should have done some more visually, but action nuts are always going to bemoan the lack of action in any movie no matter how good it is. Apparently TDK wasn't great because there was no action! Jesus Christ, just look at explosions on Youtube or something if thats the most important thing to you in a movie. 	@Ror: I get where you're coming from and I saw some social commentary in Singer's films, but he didn't really make any controversial moves with these films. He could have gone way deeper into the social comparisons between the civil rights movement--which was the basis for Stan Lee's original concept--and the gay rights movement--which is the current basis in the comics (X-Men are even living in San Francisco). 	Here's the plot run-down: X1: There are mutants. One mutant leader is good and wants to be friends with humans; the other leader is bad and wants to turn everyone into mutants or kill them off. 	I'm not even saying I want to see him return to it, I wouldn't mind but new blood is good too..provided they don't go all Ratner on it again. If he was to continue, I would love to see either Sinister or Apocalypse. I would actually love to see Angel become Archangel more than most things. 	@Ror/Tyler: I think Sinister is the next logical plotline for the franchise because it plays into the previous themes (see my comment above) about creating/curing mutants, etc. In the comics, Sinister was working behind-the-scenes with DNA for years, even experimenting with Cyclops and Jean Grey (can we go back to calling her Marvel Girl ever?). 	I agree with Bijous, a superhero movie should show superheroes. Watchmen was good, despite everyone wearing spandex outfits. Hasn't Marvel proved that it worked with Iron Man, Spiderman and the Hulk? We have our non-suit wearing Heroes on television already, I don't need to see the same thing in theatres as well. Suit up!!! Oh, and I don't have a problem with Singer. It's part of the comic book "convention" that they wear costumes. You just have to accept that going into the film. Leaving it out is like taking salt out of your diet: it leaves everything bland. 	I will say this again for the cheap seats in the back: It is a MAJOR cop out for a director or a studio to say that a superhero costume doesn't translate well to screen when they don't even try it. With reboots being all the rage right now I would think some director would have the balls to put these guys in their costumes (spandex and all) and let the GENERAL AUDIENCE decide if they like it or not. 	But a sellout is someone who compromises their ideals or principals and such for money. Singer made some movies..then he made another movie, and now he wants to revisit the first set of movies. How does that in any way make him a sell out? When he left the X franchise it was actually in pretty good hands with Mathew Vaughn at the time..it was only after he left that Ratner came aboard. And Supes Returns turned out, at least imo, to be a damn good movie. He's a sellout because he left his envisioned trilogy in the hands of someone else to finish. What if Lucas had done the same with Star Wars? Now that his Superman movie dreams are down the crapper, he wants to edge back into X-Men. In my opinion, that shows bad form. Does that mean I don't want him back for another run? Not at all. 	At least with Singer we know we can expect a quality film. If they reboot, choose another director, or go another direction with the storyline, there's no telling what kind of mess they'll wind up with. Comic book movies are a fairly new Hollywood commodity, and they're still trying to figure out who has the skillset to successfully direct them. Clearly, some directors have no idea how to create a believable world for these characters, so I'm perfectly happy if they stick with someone like Singer who has proven himself. (At least he proved himself with these particular characters. The fact that he flubbed up so badly with Superman just goes to show how delicately this stuff needs to be handled.) 	well, actually, in grant morrison's run of The New X-Men they DID all wear all-leather costumes that were identical to each other. and i could be wrong, but i believe the first movie came out during that run. i've never been one to complain about the costumes in these super hero movies because you can't sake the costumes from the comics and put them on screen, they would look silly. 	I think the question regarding what the next story should be is still unanswered. Other than a bad ass mutant and an interesting cover up what does mr. sinister really bring? 	Personally, I didn't have a problem with the X-Men not wearing their comic costumes. That movie worked without them. There are some movies that I may not accept without outfits. I can't imagine the Avengers without costumes. I don't want to see Thor running around in a Brooks Brothers suit screaming he's the son of Odin. I don't want the Hulk smashing things in a tight leather suit. And I don't want to see Captain America without the star on his chest. If they were seen without masks, then they could be traced back to the school, and the purpose of the school is to be a safe haven for the mutants of the world. 	My biggest beef with the costumes was the lack of individuality between the X-Men. I want the costumes to fit one particular member, and be based off his/her powers, personality, and other attributes to them. The movie costumes were all identical, save for the color of the highlights in them, which you could barely see, and Storm had a cape. That's it. The costumes should reflect who each character is. 	Wow a lotof hate for the X-Men series. It can be fixed, easily. So @Leee NO REBOOTS! HAWK SMASH REBOTOS! Here is a list ofcomplaints about why the series needs a reboot: 1. Scott died in X-3 2. Kenny, I mean Jean Died in X-3 3. Professor X died in X-3 4. It wasn't the original line up 5. They didn't have their original costumes 6. It wasn't true to the comics enough 7. It had too many characters 8. It focused on Wolverine too much 9. Halle Barry took over X-3 10. Ben Foster as Angel And here are some responses to those complaints in order 1. Did you see a body for Scott? no? then how can you be sure he is dead. He could easily have been taken away by Sinister or another villain. 2. She is teh Kenny of Marvel. she ALWAYS DIES. You could easily adapt the Inferno storyline and say that it was the Madelyne Pryor clone made by Mister Sinister. 3. If you listen to the commentary to X-3 the film makers stated that the body that the kids see in ethics class is Xavier's brain dead twin brother. When they were in the womb Xavier's mind wiped his brothers, leaving him a shell. And Xavier transfered his mind to it. They fixed their own error. 4. So what if it wasn't the original 5. Angel and Iceman made it in the series anyway. If you want you can say a three year old Bobby was at the school ;P 5. As for costumes... 	I love the first 2 X-films, but I can see where they strayed from the comics, particularly in the characterizations of some....er.....characters. But I think they remained overall pretty faithful to the comics. They did really get Cyke all wrong. They made him not confidant, leader-like, or tough at all. I didn't think he was the leader of the team for a second. They did mess up Storm a bit, but that could be mostly attributed to Halle's awful performances, but I don't think the way they wrote her was so faithful either. Naomie Harris should be the next Storm. No Zack Snyder, please no. He is wrong for the X-Men. I could see him with the Wolverine sequel, but his style is just wrong for the X-Men as a whole. 	@Roland: We're talking about superheroes, not soldiers. Singer tried making their costumes like basic training 'initial issue' uniforms. Their costumes represent their persona. Having them all in thick leather suits was a cop out to putting thought into individualistic suits that would work on screen. You want to talk realism, then when have any of you EVER seen any Fighters wearing head to toe leather? It affords absolutely no mobility! If you have a real world example, please show it to me. 	To be honest, I would have rather NONE of the characters had a costume/uniform/suit on for X-Men 1. From the tone of the movie, the X-Men had never faced off against Magneto or any other threat before. Why would they need to stockpile suits? The smart thing to gauge audience reaction would have been to have them in regular clothes in X1, they encounter their first threat (Magneto) and then have them create outfits before X-Men 2 began. 	Hawk- If they did what you suggested, I'd be ok with that. Provided Singer stays away from the work, it could turn out ok. The fact that so many foul ups have to be addressed is discomforting. I'm in DDD's camp here. I think there is room for expansive improvement. Singer made huge headroom for this genre with Xmen. But that doesn't excuse all the errors. Fans were so giddy with excitement to see their heroes put to film, they were willing to look past its shortcomings(and still do). Singer wants back in because this franchise catapulted his career and reputation into overdrive. But by his own admission, he's not really a fan of this genre. Its money for him. Just imagine how great X-Men 1 would have been if Magneto hadnt had a cheesy plan to basically turn people into water but had instead faced off against the X-Men with his Bortherhood of Mutants? Imagine how great iit would have been to see Wolverine vs. Sabertooth with Sabertooth perhaps dropping hints about Logans past instead of Wolverine vs. Wolverine (Mystique) The second film was no better for poor scenes and missed oppurtunities - just think of all the new mutants that Stryker could have been holding captive that they could have introduced!
