No Robert Downey, Jr. in The Avengers?

The Iron Man 2 and Sherlock Holmes star said that he has "no set plans" for the future.
In a candid interview, actor Robert Downey, Jr., currently at the height of fame thanks to the spectacular success of Iron Man, tells Entertainment Weekly that he may retire from acting if Sherlock Holmes doesn't perform well.

Robert Downey, Jr.:

"I have no set plans for my future. I’ve never had it this good — this is my day in the sun — and I certainly don’t want to look a gift horse in the molars. But [my wife] Susan and I want to begin to be in our lives as much as we are in our jobs. I’d love just to sit here and say, 'What movie’s playing tonight?' I’d love to finish the new book about D-day I’m reading. I love painting, I love music.

I’m f***ing really good at what I do — and have been for a long time, so I don’t waver on that. But here’s the thing: I can only be a guy on a call sheet probably, I don’t know, maybe a couple more times. It’s something I’m so grateful to have in my palm, and yet I already see its inevitable decay. If Sherlock Holmes performs well, I could be busy for the next 5 or 7 or 10 years."

His statements imply that he is not obligated to appear in another Iron Man movie or in The Avengers, which is contrary to the multi-picture deal that he is assumed to be under.

Sherlock Holmes opens December 25th!

Wow, well let's hope that Sherlock does well, if not we might have to see another casting change in Iron Man.
WEAPON420 - 11/22/2009, 2:45 AM
I really, really, really hope RDJ is just fooling around. Maybe he was having a bummer day or something...

I guess we all need to go out and see Sherlock Holmes then!
Brent Sprecher - 11/22/2009, 2:46 AM
Aw, hell no! You can't retire Tony! I mean, Robert!
Bijous - 11/22/2009, 2:50 AM
C'mon Robert, you are not Cat Stevens.
MisterFixit - 11/22/2009, 2:57 AM
But where did he say that he may retire? I think he is only afraid that these successfull years are the last, for age or some other problem
MisterFixit - 11/22/2009, 3:05 AM
He is just high on some good coke.

(Robert, if you are reading this, I sincerely apologize. You are one of the greatest actors of your generation, and you deserve to be. I just cant help myself, and will do anything for a cheap laugh. Sorry. I love your work, btw ;)
Jojo Risin - 11/22/2009, 3:38 AM
I thought he said Iron Man was a trilogy on the tropic thunder extra's !? :P
teabag - 11/22/2009, 3:54 AM
MY ANSWER TO THIS....MONEY TALKS.
GUNSMITH - 11/22/2009, 4:13 AM
Not the first time he said that. This is just his philosopy. If you have seen the interview in IM's bonus disk,he said more or less "i was 39 when i took the role, and now i.m 41. I think i'll be at my best for the next 5-7 years, with training,so this is the right moment for doing movies like these". He mentioned his age in others 2-3 interview i have seen. He is only worried hollywood wont ask him for others movies or he wont be 'physically adapted' in few years. But,hell,he will be :-)
gosh,i hope you guys are able to understand my poor grammar in my post. Sorry for this
MisterFixit - 11/22/2009, 4:16 AM
He didn't say he was quitting acting. He said if
Sherlock Holmes does well he might be busy for
5-10 years on the call back sheets...or doing other
movies different from what he's already contracted
to do!

He said he has it in his palm now but yet he sees
it's inevitable decay as all actors who are hot for
a time but then get too old to play the leading man
types!

He did say Iron Man was a trilogy! He is contracted
for 3 Iron Man movies. He won't be retiring, if he
ever does, until his contracted movies are up. He's
probably contracted for 3 Holmes movies too if they
do well! That's the way they do it in Hollywood now.
They contract at least a trilogy for each movie
franchise!

Let's not get our panties in a knot now! lol
DDD - 11/22/2009, 4:21 AM
if he means he is getting old. well yeah he is old. shit happens. they dont need to show him with his shirt off all of the time. i only want to see him as stark or the guy in tropic thunder. i never liked this guy. but he is great in tropic thunder and ironman.

i think his future should be invested in voice acting after ironman. he is really good with his voice.
grif - 11/22/2009, 4:23 AM
I mean Anthony Hopkins has vehemently said he's retiring
twice now and he's still back making movies! Actors are
strange creatures!
DDD - 11/22/2009, 4:25 AM
Hey,he is only 44
MisterFixit - 11/22/2009, 4:28 AM
Its bull crap, he'll be in it. he's messing about. MARVEL wont risk [frick]ing up the AVENGERS! ; D
LEEE777 - 11/22/2009, 4:52 AM
if he is not going to be in more ironman, and a couple avneger films then ill be pissed. and it looks like hes going to set his pants on fire in that pic.
1chris2 - 11/22/2009, 5:37 AM
this is just to get iron man fans to go see sherlock holmes! threaten us that if we dont, no more ironman! I Smell 8u)) $h!T
cincyboy - 11/22/2009, 5:48 AM
I dont understand how this implies no role in avengers?...kinda a stretch here kid
~X
XmutantX - 11/22/2009, 5:56 AM
Y is he burning his leg in this pic? lol
XmutantX - 11/22/2009, 5:57 AM
well u know what to do guys......Go see sherlock holmes 3 times! even if it's not good....u can carry a chick to distract u the other 2 times. simple!
Kes - 11/22/2009, 6:20 AM
of course this prolly just means if Sherlock does well ....the franchise's sequels will have him busy for the next 5 to 7 years....but whateva stirs your pot!
Kes - 11/22/2009, 6:27 AM
robert downey jr. will be back for at least a third iron man, as for the avengers thats still up in the air
deadpool21 - 11/22/2009, 6:31 AM
XmutantX@ It helps with the shakes :P

teabag - 11/22/2009, 7:14 AM
i can hear all the hearts breaking right now. lol
InFamouslyCool - 11/22/2009, 7:17 AM
DDD-- I agree, he isn't saying he wants to quit. He knows better than most that oppertunities can dry up. As much as he would like to kick back and enjoy life,he had better take what he can get while he is a hot commodity.
For every Robert Redford there are 20 actors who can't find a job after a certain age.
Hawksblueyes - 11/22/2009, 7:21 AM
The Avengers isn't a sure-fire project, so no one has been officially cast. RDJ, SLJ and the others have multi-picture contracts but nothing specifically about The Avengers. The only people 100% sure of it happening are the those that read IMBD as if it were scripture.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/22/2009, 7:27 AM
Modest fellow isn't he? Im sure he is just waxing lyrical like Mortenson was a while ago.."Oh, its such a burden and strain on my life, time to stop and smell the roses"..."Hey Rob, here's 70 million to go make Avengers"..."[frick] yeah! Those roses smell like shit anyway!"
RorMachine - 11/22/2009, 7:48 AM
well now he's got a sadistic streak doesn't he? All he has to do is to stay on board for two more years! That's not that bloody long!

And then he can sod off in any fashion he so desires..

"I already see it's inevitable decay"..... HORSESHIT!

Does anyone have any idea what he' stalking about? Is this some Dame Judy kind of shit about not being able to find work because your older? What's he on about now?
DarthMulder - 11/22/2009, 7:56 AM
lol @ Ror: Ahhhhhh.. Your comments sooth my soul. Yes indeed. Exactly right
DarthMulder - 11/22/2009, 7:58 AM
he might not have said he'd retire, but he DID say:

"I can only be a guy on a call sheet probably, I don’t know, maybe a couple more times. "

and:

"I’d love just to sit here and say, 'What movie’s playing tonight?' I’d love to finish the new book about D-day I’m reading. I love painting, I love music."

sounds to me like he's tired of living the hollywood life and wants to settle down. but who knows.

CorndogBurglar - 11/22/2009, 8:31 AM
This sucks big time.

Oh and Pats are about whup to Jets today!
Ozymandias - 11/22/2009, 8:49 AM
CorndogBurglar- I agree that's what it sounds like to me

but come on SLH will do great! I know I'm going to see it christmas weekend.

RDJ has to play iron man in the AVENGERS,
NO ONE ELSE COULD PLAY TONY STARK SOOOOO WELL!
peterparker420 - 11/22/2009, 9:19 AM
Oz: just try not to go for it on 4th and 2 on your own 28 and all will be well.
Simonsonrules - 11/22/2009, 9:36 AM
Saying that he has "no set plans" for the future doesn't mean he isn't signed on for Iron Man 3 and Avengers. It just means they haven't been officially greenlighted yet.
slimybug - 11/22/2009, 9:43 AM
Ror@ lmao........

:P
teabag - 11/22/2009, 10:04 AM
Thats bull shit hes just trying to get attention.

He thinks that if he says this that people will see Sherlock Holmes and he'll get paid more.

Marvel will not risk losing RDJ, hes definitely coming back.
BatmanKnight - 11/22/2009, 10:13 AM
@Simonsonrules:I was so mad at that play. Bill Belicheck should have punted the ball instead.[Frick]ing Peyton Manning and Colts!

NE Patriots all the way!
Ozymandias - 11/22/2009, 10:19 AM
I really hope they make The Avengers movie! So Robert dont quit.
AlexDeLarge666 - 11/22/2009, 10:46 AM
Pfft...who cares about Holmes. At the very least Robertmust play Stark when he is needed. He can retire from all other roles.

stark - 11/22/2009, 10:49 AM
Even if Holmes fails (which I doubt) I cant see him retiring from acting - especially not when he's made such a brilliant acting comeback! I think its best to take this with a pinch of salt! :)
JoshW - 11/22/2009, 10:50 AM
I doubt he won't be in Iron Man 3 or Avengers. Seriously, I highly doubt it.

I'm not that worried. Sure, it's always a possibility, but I don't see RDJ not being in another IM movie or Avengers.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/22/2009, 11:10 AM
Robert simply didn't want to give away any info on Avengers. We all know how hush hush its gotta be. Who in their right mind would'nt want to be in The Avengers movie?
hewilldefytheirgravity - 11/22/2009, 12:04 PM
Josh@ i agree , we should take it with a pinch of salt....and alot of Tequila :D
teabag - 11/22/2009, 12:06 PM

TheLivingWeapon - 11/22/2009, 1:03 PM
he's full of crap. he signed a contract. him and christian bale should talk to their lawyers about things like contracts, legalities, ect...
deathmetalbrian - 11/22/2009, 1:21 PM
I think they need to lock in the RDJ for any and all possible Iron Man movies and sequels and or spin-offs.
They need to do that with all comic book movie actors Who are the best possible actors for their roles. that would stop all the disappointing and shitty CBM movies like DragonBall Evolution and spider-Man 3.
JRay420 - 11/22/2009, 1:25 PM
Trust me, hes not leaving the iron man franchise. I see where he is coming from but he isnt leaving his bread and butter at the moment. he might be frustrated that people only see him as IRON MAN these days but hey, i dont see william shatner tearing up whenver people only assiciate himself with being Captain Kirk.

one look at his paycheck and you can bet hell do the avengers and call it a day when its all said and done.
brianj22 - 11/22/2009, 1:35 PM
I dont get any implications about Iron Man or Avengers from what he said. Oh well maybe I'm just slow he said he can be on a call sheet a couple more times and i'm assuming when he says couple he doesnt literally mean two
breakUbatman - 11/22/2009, 2:00 PM
to the fuy who posted the ironan pik with kaps look

that is a wu tang rekord
FrankCastle1 - 11/22/2009, 2:58 PM
He needs to do 3 Avengers movie, one more Iron Man, two Sherlock Holmes sequels & a Shaggy Dog sequel (Im kidding on that last one! lol), then he can retire from acting because I dont think he would be able to do a movie that is more awesome than the roles of Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes
dancingmonkey08 - 11/22/2009, 2:59 PM
@frank- realy? oh ok fanx
TheLivingWeapon - 11/22/2009, 3:03 PM
I think Tom Cruise was the first option for Iron Man
brazilianbatman - 11/22/2009, 6:10 PM
I THINK ITS NOT TIME FOR A DRAGON BALL MOVIE, EVOLUTION SUCKED, BECAUSE OF THE BAD DIRECTION AND LOW BUDGET, FOR A DRAGONBALL MOVIE EVER BE GOOD, THEY MUST INVEST ON CGI, AND A BUDGET LIKE AVATAR
brazilianbatman - 11/22/2009, 6:14 PM
Sounds like he's saying he's loving his moment in the sun. I guess he remebers when he wasnt in such high demand. I really didnt get him saying he was ready to call it quits. More like you never know how long these moments last.
BLADE4040 - 11/22/2009, 6:43 PM
I think Sherlock Holmes will be a one-shot.

But you know, people say things without thinking. Maybe he is saying that The Avengers is still up in the air. The movie would suck without him, but he must do Iron Man 3. Maybe they can do The Avengers without showing his face?
Fartman - 11/22/2009, 7:25 PM
@ blade

he DID say he's loving his time in the sun, but he also said he can see the end of the tunnel up ahead. he pretty much said he only wants to do a couple more movies. i don't get how people can say they don't get that vibe when thats exactly what he said, lol. none of us can hear his voice or his tone, so how can anyone not go by what was said? now whether or not its true, who knows.
CorndogBurglar - 11/22/2009, 7:34 PM
he hasint said for defo he's going to retire, i can personally see him doing another iron man but anything else then god knows, he's a talented actor tho would be a shame if he did up and retire.
ukboy28 - 11/22/2009, 8:05 PM
He seems like he's the guy saying "I'm too old for this sh!t," but keeps on trucking.
Upupandaway - 11/22/2009, 8:16 PM
watch he retires and then who's gonna be iron man in the 3rd movie, gary busey
hawkngo - 11/22/2009, 8:24 PM
CorndogBurglar: I dont know sounds like a guy who needs a vacation maybe. I remeber those spring training and two a day camps when I played ball and we would all sit around sayin similar things. Boy I cant wait till I dont have to do this anymore... no more weights,no more pads,no more running. Come next year and the year after etc your saying the same thing until injury or old age forces you from the game. He did say if Sherlock Holmes did well he could be around another 5-10 yrs. If he wanted to retire seems like he'd do it before then ...who khows maybe your right thats just my take.
BLADE4040 - 11/23/2009, 8:51 AM
Misterunderhill, I agree with you.
BLADE4040 - 11/23/2009, 9:08 AM

It ain't so:)
RorMachine - 11/23/2009, 9:45 AM

JUNTAO347 - 11/23/2009, 10:47 AM
He probably doesn't want to be an the Avengers movie because Zak Penn is writing it. Big Mistake Marvel!
Hammbone - 11/23/2009, 11:27 AM
I don't know. It DOES sound like he's thinking about RETIRING. He says he has "no set plans for the future," which means he's not thinking about Iron Man 3 or The Avengers and he talks about wanting to spend more time with his wife and just living...
Bijous - 11/23/2009, 11:52 AM
@JerzeyHellboy: How is it taken out of context? His exact words were:

"I have no set plans for my future."

Even the article that served as the source of the news posed the same question:

'Sherlock Holmes' Exclusive: Is Downey Quitting Acting?
Brent Sprecher - 11/23/2009, 11:55 AM
It's totally taken out of context. This is alarmist b.s. RJD never says he's not going to be in the Avengers. He never mentions the Avengers. He's wildly successful, so he can talk about retiring like we talk about taking a day off from work.

When Disney bought Marvel a bunch of alarmist folks were losing their sh*t proclaiming that Thor wasn't going to be made. Now sets are being built and filming's starting in January.

EW is trying to drum up sales, just like this post is trying to get people to read it. People shouldn't get their panties in a bunch every time someone says boo. Relax. Post these articles, but how about a better title, like, RDJ speculates about retiring sometime in the future. Stop being whiny ninnies.
80sFace - 11/23/2009, 12:44 PM
What 80sFace said.

Might want to cut down on the caffeine, guys. :)
KeithM - 11/23/2009, 1:11 PM
Um, how is anyone able to draw any kind of conclusion from this interview? Sounds to me like it's an open ended answer. He's neither confirming nor denying anything.
Apoc4all - 11/23/2009, 2:28 PM
Living Weapon:

RE: The Captain America Iron Man hybrid.

I'm pretty sure thats the costume the green goblin uses as leader of the new Avengers/Dark Avengers in the Dark Reign story arc. If it isn't it's virtually identical to it.
Acerimmer1 - 11/23/2009, 2:33 PM
No Downey JR in Avengers means no point in going to go see Avengers...Nuff Said
RomeyRome2002 - 11/23/2009, 2:35 PM
@ brent

lol, some people just refuse to see what is right in front of their face. sure, none of us know what he'll do, and this could all be BS. but the fact is he said:

"I have no set plans for my future".

and

"I can only be a guy on a call sheet probably, I don’t know, maybe a couple more times."

i'm sorry, but its pretty clear what he said. again, who knows what he'll decide, but the fact is, he's THINKING of calling it quits. at some point in the near future. if an NFL player went to his coach and said, "i think i only have another season or two in me", the coach wouldn't totally dismiss it. sure its no guarantee WHEN he'll actually quit, but only an idiot would totally dismiss it as nonsense, especially when all us fans can go off of is what the guy said, lol.

CorndogBurglar - 11/23/2009, 4:20 PM

I think I remember hearing he is going to retire

Then reeeeeeeeally smell the roses.

yeah i remember anthony hopkins saying the same thing about ten years ago when he made that stupid rageing bear movie. its to be expected of actors to act like spoiled litlle bitches....ive always accepted that of them. it takes such a monumental narcasist to be an actor in hollywood, it should almost be classified as a new species. twitter is such a perfect forum for these creatures because they are twits. the biggest problem is WE feed the twits and they thrive. shut up and make the f@#&ing movies you twits.

Errmm, wasnt there an article a while back saying that both RDJ and Don Cheadle were BOTH signed up for an Iron-Man sequel and the Avengers?!?! - Im sure the articles still on here somewhere :-P

So.... if Downey's contracted for those flicks "HE WILL BE IN THE AVENGERS" = beyond that' maybe thats whats in qu. :-S
Elle1980 - 11/25/2009, 4:05 AM
