Ryan Reynolds Speaks!

The elusive actor (finally) discusses Green Lantern and Deadpool!
Actor Ryan Reynolds, the man that fans everywhere are considering the current torch-bearer for the the future of comic book movies, finally opens up about starring as two iconic characters from competing comic book companies: DC Comics' Hal Jordan/Green Lantern and Marvel Comics' Wade Wilson/Deadpool!

Reynolds told MTV that 2009 has been one of "the most unbelievable" years of his life:

"Starting with setting some goals that I didn't think would be possible several years before, running a marathon, getting married -- the year has been incredible, all across the board. The fact that Green Lantern is something that's about to get going full-steam pretty soon, and then there is Deadpool on the horizon as well. If you asked me if this would be happening three years ago, I would have kick-f---ed you back to where you were from."

Though he may now appear as a shoe-in for both roles, Reynolds said that he had to work hard to see both projects come to fruition:

"It's incredibly validating and gratifying when you can see that you can manifest something that you desperately want or a goal that you have. This is a difficult industry to get anything made, let alone a passion project, so when you see people understand what your vision is and come aligned with that common goal, it's pretty cool. I'm including all the creative types that are actually involved with Deadpool and Green Lantern, because those guys want to make an authentic movie, and that's something a few years ago studios disregarded."

Obviously, getting married to Scarlett Johansson had to be one of the most memorable events in his life, but the other event that really impacted Reynolds was trying on the Green Lantern suit:

"I think, seeing the prototypes for the Green Lantern costumes was a huge moment. It was a moment when I was like, 'This is happening, and it's happening in the right way.' That's a pretty cool, definitive moment for me."

Many fans were not happy with the portrayal of Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Reynolds said that he shared some of those frustrations:

"It's always difficult to fully embrace something that isn't perfect, in terms of staying true to the source material. So it was a little bit frustrating. I really wanted to play Wade, and I really wanted to play Deadpool, and it would kill me to see someone else play them. I had a kind of ham-fisted attitude that it had to be perfect, but it doesn't. The movie's called Wolverine, it's not called Deadpool or Wade. I thought it was a nice little wink and tip of the hat to things to come. Finding the tone of that character alone is such a difficult prospect. I've been in so many meetings lately about Deadpool and meeting all these writers. Everyone is always looking for that one line, 'What is that character?' and for me it's kind of like, 'There's a guy, and he's in a highly militarized comedic fame spiral.' That's not an easy thing to write -- an entire screenplay, let alone a franchise. I had a blast playing Wade. Every line I had in that was stuff I thought he would say. It wasn't something that a writer said to me. It was fun to really create that character, including everything he spits out of his awful mouth."

Reynolds said that he's "known about" Green Lantern his "whole life," but it wasn't until he met with the film's director that he really made a connection with the character:

"I fell in love with the character when I met with [director] Martin Campbell. When I sat down with him, I really got what it is that this guy is all about. When you have a guy like Martin Campbell, part of his charm is that he has balls of titanium, and the other part is that he's slightly crazy, and you have to be to take on something with the scope of Green Lantern. He's less of the director and more of a general. He just really knows strategies, he knows the intricacies, and his attention to detail! It's infectious. I sat down with him, and I could not even believe what he was saying. When I went to the meeting, I was entirely cynical. I thought, 'What the hell, I'll see what they have to say,' and I left the room with a completely different perspective."

DEADPOOL VS GREEN LANTERN!

RockNRollCC - 11/25/2009, 11:31 AM
LOL MarVell, DarthMulder, Sculybanger It's nice to see some passion for the characters he's portraying but we heard the same thing from Jackman and look how that turned out.
Stubbyswof - 11/25/2009, 11:33 AM
I just wanna know who is gonna play sinestro?

SHHH - 11/25/2009, 11:33 AM
I don't think that'll happen Lee, and you can't exactly blame him for the adaptation of Deadpool, he was just playing the part. I blame the writers, director, and Hugh Jackman.
Stumblin - 11/25/2009, 11:33 AM

SHHH - 11/25/2009, 11:41 AM
Darth, that pic as the avater looks like the doctor/cobra commander from GI joe
Stubbyswof - 11/25/2009, 11:41 AM
Thats better
Stubbyswof - 11/25/2009, 11:43 AM
Awesome article! The Hal Jordan Green Lantern is my favorite DC character. It was so hard to see him turn into a villain and have Kyle take over (even though I liked Kyle).

I never thought I would see a live-action GL movie with top talent like this! Hurray!
Bijous - 11/25/2009, 11:44 AM
Sounds good on all points. I approve this message.
Betty - 11/25/2009, 11:48 AM
lol @ Stubby.. Betty made it for me and I am incredibly proud of it. So much so that I switched right back and I will probably keep this moniker 4ever now lol

Actually I had been planning to do a manip exactly like this for months but I was unsure if i wanted to keep the name.
DarthMulder - 11/25/2009, 11:48 AM
I am super stoked for Green Lantern, more so than any other comic book movie in recent memory!
Brent Sprecher - 11/25/2009, 11:53 AM
The newest one makes me chuckle. It threw me a little when I would go back to read comments and it changed. I've never thought about changing mine since its been my nickname since high school

Its THOR for me
Stubbyswof - 11/25/2009, 11:59 AM
DarthMulder-- ok that one is way funny!

Brent--You txt is green, wow!
Betty - 11/25/2009, 12:07 PM
Great stuff, Reynolds is a good guy, and a great actor too. His 5 minutes in Origins were the best out of the entire film! (Not the Barakapool part, the Wade part)

Brent: I'm with you there man! GL is one of my all-time favorite heroes, and with Martin Campbell at the helm, I'm excited for this one the most out of the barrage of CBM's in 2011!

InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/25/2009, 12:09 PM
BRENT @ Kudos me too!!!

Well GL and when WATCHMEN was coming out!

LEEE777 - 11/25/2009, 12:12 PM
GL is my all time favorite comic book hero with Batman coming second. This is the movie I have most wanted to see made my entire life.
Dmon - 11/25/2009, 12:19 PM
DARTH MULLER @ You've changed back dude, ffs lol!!!

; D

DMON @ That really cool dude! I just hope they do it justice like it deserves!
LEEE777 - 11/25/2009, 12:31 PM
I actually cried as a kid reading Emerald Twilight when they turned him in to a villian and actually hated Superman for a while because DC could kill Superman and bring him back but just cast Hal Jordan aside. And it seemed like the writers just destroyed Coast City it give Superman his powers back. But now I am ok with it because they brought Hal back and it has made for one epic story.
Dmon - 11/25/2009, 12:32 PM
I'd say i'm more stoked about Thor but Green Lantern is a close second! I just have more faith in Marvel Movies ;)
Shaman - 11/25/2009, 12:41 PM
Also it was the only time I wrote the editors of a comic book company to give them a piece of my mind. I wish I had made a copy of that letter I sent them 15 years ago it would be great to read now.
Dmon - 11/25/2009, 12:42 PM
@Dmon: Yeah, that was some controversial $#%@ back then. I remember kind of freaking out about it. I thought, "Okay, they'll bring Hal back in a year or so," and then time marched on and it seemed like he was never coming back. You can thank Geoff Johns for bringing Hal back to his full glory!
Brent Sprecher - 11/25/2009, 12:44 PM
GL will be the combination of superhero movies like Superman and SciFi movies like Starwars/Star Trek also a little bit of modern day Rocketeer. It could be the most epic movie ever if done right.
Dmon - 11/25/2009, 12:51 PM
If i had to compare WB with what they did for the Batman franchise and Marvel with what they did for Ironman's, make mine Marvel. But i'm still very excited to see Hal on the big screen!
Shaman - 11/25/2009, 1:07 PM
Shaman@ I dont know about that. Marvel has some good movies and they out number the good WB's ones but truely great ones in my opinion they have one Iron Man and WB has Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Watchman
Dmon - 11/25/2009, 1:33 PM
thats a sweet pic of him as gl brent!!!
Duhdaduh - 11/25/2009, 1:34 PM
Right now, I'm more excited about Thor with all of the news and all. I'm glad Reynolds seems to care for the role. GL is probably my favorite DC hero. (I love all of the JLA very much.)

@Shaman: I agree. Having Marvel produce the movies themselves was a great idea and a great thing for CBMs.
Upupandaway - 11/25/2009, 1:39 PM
@Brent, Yeah Geoff Johns is awesome.
Dmon - 11/25/2009, 1:39 PM
Dmon- Those three films were truly great but Ironman is best IMO. That's the only reason that would make me anticipate "more" Thor than GL. Still doesn't mean i'm not giddy as a Twilight girl to be getting a GL film ;)

Upupandaway- Definitely!!!
Shaman - 11/25/2009, 1:40 PM
@Shaman I hate to admit it but I am giddy for both too.
I just hope they dont make him the Ultimate Thor.
Dmon - 11/25/2009, 1:46 PM
Classic Thor all the way WITHOUT Donny and his stick. He's just not needed IMO.
Shaman - 11/25/2009, 1:53 PM
Geoff Johns is a genious. You know he killed off Kyle Rayner, right?
Phinehas - 11/25/2009, 1:59 PM
Kyle Rayner's dead??? Good thing John is still around ;)
Shaman - 11/25/2009, 2:01 PM
Yep! This week!
Phinehas - 11/25/2009, 2:10 PM
Brent - I have a serious problem thinking of Deadpool as an icon -- especially in the same breath as the Green Lantern!!!
JonF - 11/25/2009, 2:20 PM
Cool, can't wait.
Bandrews1 - 11/25/2009, 2:23 PM
choi art in x-force = wicked...

reynolds sold out on deadpool
Anil Rickly - 11/25/2009, 2:56 PM
I've said it on these posts many times, Green Lantern will be D.C's Iron Man. Not only will it elevate Ryan, but more importantly bring D.C to the dance. Marvel has a head start, and left a good blueprint of what, and what not to do. D.C does need to get working on a Superman film, and a damn good one.
ASSASSIN666 - 11/25/2009, 3:13 PM
@JonF: Yeah, I feel you. It just sounded better than saying, "...an iconic character and a lesser-known anti-hero..."

@Assassin: I agree with you.
Brent Sprecher - 11/25/2009, 3:13 PM
how is ryan reynolds elusive?
RemiMartini - 11/25/2009, 3:52 PM
He usually avoids the press, and there isn't a lot of info released about his personal life outside of acting.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/25/2009, 4:04 PM
i hope everyone gets their fill of liking deadpool in while they can. he's the next wolverine. the wheels of ka have already started spinning. he's already making guest appearances in every marvel comic character's books. even books that make NO sense for him to be in. he's got two series' of his own (is that right? 2?) now he's getting a movie. i'm all about him being popular, because i DO like him, but just wait, he will get over-exposed just like wolverine did, and it will greatly lessen his character.
CorndogBurglar - 11/25/2009, 4:14 PM
both movies are going to be SUPER EPIC!!

I really can't decide which one I want to see more.

LEE- how did he [frick] up deadpool in W:O? It wasn't
his fault it was the writer/director. Even
Renolds admited that movie was junk!

torched4- LOVE THE FIRST VIDEO!! SUPER FUNNY!
peterparker420 - 11/25/2009, 4:39 PM
@assassin - I wouldn't bet on it. This movie will carry a lot of hype because of RR but it'll fail to deliver. It'll have the exact opposite effect on the DC universe that Iron Man had on Marvel.

@corndog - Definitely overexposure. Many fans will realize RR should stay in chick flicks and slap-stick comedies cause all his roles are based on the same character type.

redrum010 - 11/25/2009, 4:42 PM
@ redrum

i just don't want to see it happen again. wolverine used to be such a badass character, but now he's "Wolverine Lite". and it all started when he started appearing in every book marvel publishes.

remember the days when wolverine could be hurt? remember when, even though he had a healing factor, death was still a very real possibility in any issue wolvie was in? remember when no one ever knew when he was going to start "seeing red" and attacking anything that moved, friend or foe? remember when he used to smoke [frick]ing cigars???? what a shame wolverine's character has become.

anyway, back to the point, i just don't want to see something like this happen to deadpool too. which i guess kind of already has. back in the old school x-force days, he was someone that, while annoying, other characters still feared. now no one takes him seriously. he's a joke of what he used to be. he used to be more like spidey, with just annoying banter, but now he sounds like a complete imbecile. (not that he isn't funny mind you) and before anyone says it, yes i'm aware that deadpool was created as a joke of Deathstroke the Terminator.
CorndogBurglar - 11/25/2009, 4:55 PM
I'm still disappointed by this. I like Reynolds and all, but I thought he's more suited to play the Flash... (More Wally West than Barry Allen)

But on the other hand, I never would have picked Ledger to play the Joker either.

Who should be cast for Barry Allen?
Phinehas - 11/25/2009, 6:01 PM
If Thor is done right it will be fantastic. If Green Lantern is done right is will be...man help me here I need a word better than EPIC...
gtrman - 11/25/2009, 6:23 PM
After epic is eternal, gtrman. Epic is a suiting word.
Phinehas - 11/25/2009, 6:28 PM
I'm pretty stoked about GL. He's one of my favorite DC characters. Reynolds seems to have a pretty good idea what he's getting into and who he'll disappoint if this film blows. As for Deadpool, equally cool, but I'm more ready GL.
AxlKomix - 11/25/2009, 6:40 PM

Green Lantern will be the stepping stone towards Justice League film just like Ironman is towards Avengers.
hewilldefytheirgravity - 11/25/2009, 8:03 PM
Whoever said GL will be DC's Iron Man was dead on correct!!

I really truly hope this is turns out to be as great as it can be.
DarthMulder - 11/25/2009, 8:45 PM
@ mulder

me too man! GL is one of only 3 or 4 DC characters i actually like, so i'm rooting for it!
CorndogBurglar - 11/25/2009, 8:48 PM
@CDB: Any love for Martian Manhunter? IMO, GL will be harder to bring to film than Iron Man. I haven't seen Reynolds play the straight man, so I'm waiting with some trepidation.
Upupandaway - 11/25/2009, 10:05 PM
I think Reynolds would be a great Booster Gold.
Upupandaway - 11/25/2009, 10:06 PM
gl will be great! or it better be because if it does well dc will see that they have other characters to offer the big screen not just batman and superman.

@corndog- there are a lot of great characters in the dcu. i know its the cool thing among many comic fans to say that dc is not as good as marvel but they have just as many great characters and story lines to offer.

@upupandaway- he would be a great booster but lets face it we will probably never see booster in a movie, he not exactly super high on the list of heroes who should get movies
comicboyV1 - 11/25/2009, 10:46 PM
The Green Lantern movie is either going to be excellent or they are going to make it a kids movie.
GuyFawkes - 11/26/2009, 1:05 AM
I am confident this film is going to be amazing!

cool news Brent.
BigNick - 11/26/2009, 3:30 AM
@assassin DC also left some good blueprints of what not to do as well.imagine Batman liscensed to Sony or Fox....what control would WB have over it?(i'm just glad Marvel's bankruptcy didnt get so bad that they had to sell all their characters). but i know WB was in charge with Catwoman and Batman & Robin.let's hope the properties these companies do control can at least satisfy the casual fanbase.so far Marvel Studios are 2 for 2(and it looks like soon to be 4 for 4 with IM2 and Thor)....i hope they keep their track record.
Kes - 11/26/2009, 5:21 AM
@ upupandaway

yeah man, the DC characters i really like are batman, GL, flash, martian manhunter, and captain marvel/black adam. i think they are easily the best DC has to offer :)

oh, and old school Suicide Squad was great!
CorndogBurglar - 11/26/2009, 8:48 AM
kool i hope the movies are great
flames809 - 11/26/2009, 8:49 AM
im am quite pleased with the enthusiasm he puts out about being both characters. he shows he really cares. he even takes blame for the crap that was put forth in Wolverine. I totally respect this man. he is a genius comic and great actor all around. i hope that Green Lantern really pulls a win for when it comes out and shows us the serious side like DC did with Dark Knight. Reynolds is the man no doubt about it.
LaffaTaffa - 11/26/2009, 4:14 PM
@ comicboy

i never said DC didn't have good characters. i just said that "I", as in me as an individual, don't like most DC characters. i still read some stories, sinestro corps was awesome, and blackest night is good enough to give civil war a run for its money. but still, i just don't like DC as much as marvel. it has nothing to do with "trying to say the cool thing", and everything to do with what i like.

and for the most part, DC characters are very overpowered. i like the more earthbound, street level comics. when you think about it, batman is WAY out of place in DC. he seems like he would be a much better fit swinging side by side with the Marvel Knights then he does hanging out with justice league.
CorndogBurglar - 11/27/2009, 6:37 AM
I trust in the director MARTIN CAMPBELL to bringing a epic GREEN LANTERN MOVIE.
For me Ryan R. sucks, but well I trust in the Director.
The cast for THOR is correct, I trust in KENNETH BRANAGH
OSCURO - 11/28/2009, 11:53 AM
I like DEATHSTROKE movie.
OSCURO - 11/28/2009, 11:54 AM
I think he is good for deadpool . I just hope they don't mess it up !
Bandit24 - 11/29/2009, 10:24 AM
I think Ryan wants to do a great deadpool hopefully he can manage to get the costume right ... as for GL i think it will really test his serious acting skills becuase hal jordan is not really funny .... in deadpool he can just go all out funny though
Deadpool101 - 11/29/2009, 8:49 PM
Ryan is gunna murder these rolls i cant wait too see both on film this is good for everybody!
