Heavy Metal Thunder in Jonah Hex Movie?

The heavy metal rockers Mastodon have been quietly laying down tracks for DC Comics' next live-action comic book adaptation!

According to the fine folks at AICN, the heavy metal band Mastodon is scoring the soundtrack of Jonah Hex. The only comment that the band has given up about the news is to say:

"Needless to say, (it's) pretty heavy!"

If you're unfamiliar with Mastodon, here's a sample:

Heavy Metal for a western period piece. I smell fail.
I dig Mastodon. I have the last two albums, great stuff.

I have to agree with you Sir Prize, Metal and the Old West really doesn't feel like it would mesh well. Something tells me they're taking this movie in the wrong direction...Like a campy over the top action direction.

Granted I never read the books, but seeing the covers it doesn't seem like this is how they portrayed the settings.

I've read a few issues. But this smells a lot like Knights Tale. Taking a period piece and add rock n roll. Myeh, it's been done and you would think Hollywood could have figured that out.

it will be interesting to start seeing some clips from this movie. they are trying to mesh western and current culture. may not work but we'll see
superdog - 9/3/2009, 7:55 AM
I've seen them play, they good but not my type of music. and to be added into a movie like this...Uh...What are they thinking?
droopy1317 - 9/3/2009, 8:34 AM
mastodon kicks ass
CorndogBurglar - 9/3/2009, 8:45 AM
I think they need that new muse song called like mastidonia or something that song is bad ass and western rock kinda feel check it out idk if that's the name of the actual song though

Very cool! ; )

I still cant believe WB made HEX!!!!

Bout time WB! Yeeehawww!

Cant wait for all the other DC movies too, bring it on!
LEEE777 - 9/3/2009, 9:16 AM
I feel any time they use current music acts in a movie it makes it somewhat dated. It especially seems wrong in what is essentially a period piece.
longbowhunter - 9/3/2009, 9:21 AM
As long as their music isn't awkward in the movie, like the hallelujah song in Watchmen.
supermarioworldE - 9/3/2009, 9:26 AM
I didn't think the Hallelujah song in Watchmen was awkward as it made the scene pretty funny.

HALLELUJAH! I got some booty! I got some booty! I got some booty!
Stumblin - 9/3/2009, 9:31 AM
To each his own I guess, Stumblin
supermarioworldE - 9/3/2009, 9:41 AM
I STILL WANTED TO SEE THE BIG OL' EYE
GUNSMITH - 9/3/2009, 9:57 AM
Cool band, but I would have gone with Black Label Society. Zakk Wylde could play his brand of country and metal like no other.
ASSASSIN666 - 9/3/2009, 10:19 AM
HOLLY SCARFACE!

spanky - 9/3/2009, 10:41 AM
this isn't really a true 'period' piece persay. it's got a sort of post apocalyptic feel to it am i wrong? sort of an alternate history thing going on?

Mastodon does seem out of place doing stuff for the soundtrack I'll agree though......Whatever - now where's the trailer for this sucker?
Keven - 9/3/2009, 12:40 PM
Hex is a western. It took place in the 1800's. There was a a stint where he was transported to the future. Don't know all the details. But Hex is a western, and he was in the Confederate States Army. Duh! period peace. =P

And he's wearin' a Confederate Uniform below...

SirPrize - 9/3/2009, 1:11 PM
Not to troll..This band is alright, but LP is better! >:)
Minotauro - 9/3/2009, 1:17 PM
Nice pic SirPrize
Minotauro - 9/3/2009, 1:18 PM
Don't know yet.

Metal and the old west doesn't mix?

Sure it does...I can think of many bands that have southern influences in their music

Job For a Cowboy
Pantera
Zack Wylde
Pissing Razors
Clutch?

What were you expecting? Soggy Bottom Boys or Skynyrd?

TheJester - 9/3/2009, 2:48 PM
More like Government Mule, Hell Yeah, Rebel Meets Rebel and of course Zakk and Pantera.
SirPrize - 9/3/2009, 3:23 PM
Government Mule & Pantera! Hells Yeah!

Hex & Heavy Metal not so yeah, IMO.
DDD - 9/3/2009, 3:59 PM
I would not be good to put that genre of music in a western but,If he insists.Id go with something more 80's like ACDC.
Weiner123 - 9/3/2009, 4:11 PM
Not metal
Weiner123 - 9/3/2009, 4:12 PM
DDD- Gov.t Mule is an awesome band, and long live Dimebag, I hope he is jamming with Randy Rhoads and Jimi Hendrix as we speak.
ASSASSIN666 - 9/3/2009, 4:35 PM
Maybe they won't go full force metal in their scoring.
Bijous - 9/3/2009, 6:01 PM
Hex is a western, but its kind of not too! I mean its a fantasy world. There is time travel, zombies, voodoo. Mastodon do seem a bit too heavy, but it could work.
Rorschach01 - 9/3/2009, 7:46 PM
i wouldnt really consider job for a cowboy as anything to do with southern jester, but then again i havent heard the new album so i could be wrong, they should get maylene and the sons of disaster if they want heavy and southern
Grizzly - 9/3/2009, 9:14 PM
I can't wait to see this movie...great comic book!
Agent13 - 9/4/2009, 3:06 AM
Mastodon is all screaming and distortion...terrible idea for a western.
Dr. Donald Draper - 9/4/2009, 1:24 PM
A Bad score can ruin a movie despite being a good movie
if this singer can't sing and only scream then that's bad and will other wise ruin a good movie .
if they screw this up, burn burn burn in hell maggots
It's too bad they couldn't get Thin Lizzy but the singer is dead sooooo,,, they can't.

georgia49th - 9/6/2009, 2:29 AM
I just checked Mastodon's website there working with a composer named John Powell ., does anyone know him or his work?
georgia49th - 9/6/2009, 2:41 AM
John Powell did the soundtrack for Hancock but that's all I can think of now.
