The Infinity Gauntlet. What Does This Mean For Marvel Movies?

With the unveiling of the infamous Infinity Gauntlet at SDCC, many people want to know, what does this mean for the direction of Marvel's movie universe? This is my opinion of the topic.

As most of you know by now, the Infinity Gauntlet was unveiled at SDCC, and it looks awesome! I've seen a lot of people posting in the comments section and wondering if this means Thanos will be in the Avengers, or if Marvel is gearing up for an Infinity Gauntlet film adaptation. What I'm about to say is my opinion, and my opinion only.

First of all, lets look at the first thing that popped into most people's minds: Will Thanos be in "The Avengers," and will The Infinity Gauntlet be the huge threat that brings these heroes together. In my humble opinion, I have to give a gigantic "NO!" It does not mean this at all. In fact, it would make little, to no sense. For those not familiar with it, lets look at the facts of what the Infinity Gauntlet is, and what its capable of...

1. The Infinity Gems. There are six of these gems, each has a distinct color and power. The green soul gem grants the power over the soul, orange is time, purple is space, blue is mind, yellow is reality, and red is power. Each gem, in and of themselves, has a vast amount of power, and grant the user with the power to control and manipulate each one of these things. When collected and mounted in a gauntlet, the combined gems become a weapon of unimaginable power, and grant the user control over every aspect of the gems. The wearer can warp reality to their fitting, manipulate time, and so on. Not even the combined power of the cosmic gods are enough to defeat such a weapon.

2. In "The Infinity Gauntlet," Thanos killed half of the entire living population in the entire universe in hopes of making Death fall in love with him. He did this with nothing more than a thought.

3. Adam Warlock got the aid of the rest of the living earth-bound heroes, as well as the help of many of the cosmic gods, and led an attack on Thanos. Needless to say, Thanos could have wiped the floor with every last one of them, but his arrogance led to his downfall when he allowed the heroes to have less than a 1% chance of defeating him. This, along with the unexpected betrayal of his zombified sister Nebula, was enough to bring him down.

Now, knowing those facts, would you want this to be the threat in "The Avengers" movie? I know I don't. Alone, The Avengers would have no chance whatsoever of defeating something like that. In the comic, Thanos was turning them into glass statues, desintegrating people like Captain America, and making others outright cease to exist. All with a thought. If this turned out to be the threat in the Avengers, it would need to include the cosmic characters and gods, and they just simply haven't been introduced. In fact, nothing about the cosmic side of things has been introduced yet, and this needs to be done first. And not in some half-assed explanation. There need to be entire movies about the cosmic universe before this is even considered. So if the gauntlet is the threat, and The Avengers defeat it all by their lonesome, then it will be a horrendously watered down version of the Gauntlet, on par with "The Dark Phoenix" in X3. I don't think anyone wants that, do they?

Onto the second thing that is on people's minds. Is Marvel gearing up for an Infinity Gauntlet movie? This seems more logical to me, even though, realistically, it would have to be many years before we see it. There are simply too many characters, and too much backstory and exlanations of the cosmic side of the MU for this story to take place anytime soon. I would love for Marvel to start exploring the cosmic side of things as soon as possible. Kevin Feige has already stated that he would like to explore this. So, maybe after a few years of movies, we'll finally be in a position to make a movie as epic as The Infinity Gauntlet would warrant, but that time is not now.

I believe that the Gauntlet in Thor will be nothing more than an easter egg, and they may possibly mention its power, but I don't expect it to be anything of importance for quite some time. Also, I would rather have the Infinity Gauntlet take place in its own movie crossover, outside of the Avengers franchise. Just like the comics, it should have its own name, and not take place as an Avengers sequel. The Avengers have too many villains of their own to explore to take up a sequel with this.

In short, I think they should make The Infinity Gauntlet movie as a stand-alone movie, with characters from all of Marvel's movies involved. Make it EPIC, Marvel, or don't make it at all!

Sorry for the length, but I felt it was necessary considering the amount of comments that mentioned they didn't know much about the Gauntlet. I hope you all enjoyed this article and I hope to hear your comments below. And remember, keep it respectful like! EXCELSIOR!!!!!!!!

Fist Block!

Fun Fact: There are only two cosmic beings in the entire MU who are single-handedly more powerful than the IG. The Living Tribunal, and He Who Is Above All Others.

The Living Tribunal is the Judge and Jury of the universe. When Thanos gained the IG, Living Tribunal decided to stay out of it because Thanos did not break any cosmic laws while gathering the gems.

I don't believe He Who Is Above All Others was introduced yet, but I could be wrong about that. :)
TANKGIRL - 7/26/2010, 6:23 PM
i think it's mean silver surfer movie or thanos movie
CorndogBurglar - 7/26/2010, 6:25 PM
@ anil

well i gotta agree with everything you said, man.

@ sirprize

its never too soon for a Michael Jackson joke. lol
Urban8er - 7/26/2010, 6:26 PM
My only question is why does Odin have the IG? If not him who else would have it?
Hawksblueyes - 7/26/2010, 6:26 PM
Great write up CDB and very good points all the way around. I have to agree with everything you said. ;)
HULK2099 - 7/26/2010, 6:27 PM
Thanos easter egg
TANKGIRL - 7/26/2010, 6:36 PM
Sirprize lol
UnfriendlySpidey - 7/26/2010, 6:37 PM
Nice job @CDB! Well, It seems Marvel wishes to play with our minds and let them wander as to what this means......haha

I agree for the idea of an actual Infinity Gauntlet flick, but I wonder if it'll make an appearance in one of the upcoming flicks? Maybe its revealed in the Avengers and the set up for Avengers 2? I don't know what it means....dammit where's the Watcher when you need him??? :D haha

RedDevil - 7/26/2010, 6:41 PM
I agree with CDB. Marvel should introduce the cosmic side of Marvel in order for this to happen. Marvel cosmic is really filled with great stories and characters such as Nova, Silver Surfer, Quasar, Captain Marvell.
DrLecter - 7/26/2010, 6:43 PM
@ Corndogburgler: Good article.. Good fist block too.

If Fox would ever get their cruel fangs out of the X men and The FF then something like what you proposed could happen.

But sadly I don't see that happening.

Well here's to hoping that they get going with the cosmic stuff asap! And you KNOW Thor's definitely a step in the right direction!
WOLVERINEDECADE - 7/26/2010, 6:45 PM
@CorndogBurglar: no offense intended, but isnt Nebula the Granddaughter of Thanos?
ComicBookGoth - 7/26/2010, 6:47 PM
so this means thanos is most likley gonna be the villan in the avengers or avengers 2.
its gotta be right ?
this is an obvious prelude to it.
red skull w/the cosmic cube in Cap:1st avenger.

so yeah 2012 Avengers VS Thanos......maybe ?
OdinsBeard - 7/26/2010, 6:48 PM
CDB! i agree.

sort of.

They do need to do cosmic movies first. i at least want them to introduce Captain Marvel, Nova, and The Sentry (knowing the silver surfer is tied up at FOX). i would accept an IG movie with the "big three" or four in thie case w hulk plus those added charcters. clearly the IG wouldn't be as powerful as in the comics, but if the story is done in the same fashion im willing to accept that. i don't want a movie filled with 100's of characters anyway. so just have a nessecary few and it'll be fine i think.

cuz hell yeah i want an IG movie!

i also agree that it means nothing for THOR or the up coming avngers movie. just a cool eater egg that might have potential.
spiderman620 - 7/26/2010, 6:52 PM
nice work cdb
WOLVERINEDECADE - 7/26/2010, 6:53 PM
I say Marvel make this an Animated movie like the Hulk vs. and Ultimate Avengers 1 & 2!!! ^_^

That would be a win-win situation, folks!!!!
ROMACK - 7/26/2010, 6:58 PM
CDB@ Excellent article dude! I agree Marvel needs to do this epic or not at all.
Superzero - 7/26/2010, 7:00 PM
@CORNDOGBURGLAR: Agree with EVERYthing you've said, just because they show it at con does not mean that it's going to have a "role" in Thor or Avengers or ANY of those movies for that matter. NICE PIECE!
@ComicBookGoth:
No, it does not. Dimes to donuts that you don't even SEE this thing in Thor.It will be a blink and you miss it easter egg, no more no less. End of story. Tying the Cosmic Cube into Asgard, the way they seem to be doing in Cap, is just tying THOR into Captain America just like they tied (sorta) Iron Man 2 into Thor. It's just ground work. With the cosmic cube though there are several variations of it, one does tie into the meta-physical sci-fi aspects of asgard. Having the cosmic cube in Cap makes way more sense than having the Infinity Gauntlet or Thanos be in Avengers. 1,2, or even 3. If Marvel ever DOES make an Infinity Gauntlet flick I'm betting I'll be taking my grandkids to see it. I'm 33 and my daughter is 3.
greenmonkey - 7/26/2010, 7:04 PM
You make valid points but you failed to comment on one thing. The gauntlet at the con is a "right" hand. Now, I'm not real familiar with the story but isn't the Infinite Gauntlet supposed to be a "left" hand?
BIGBMH - 7/26/2010, 7:09 PM
Thanks for the explanation. I was like "Ooh! Cool looking glove thingy!"
Destroyer14 - 7/26/2010, 7:10 PM
Great article CornDogBurglar. I agree with everything. I could see Odin explaining to Thor about the Gems.
GreenHalJordan - 7/26/2010, 7:12 PM
IM AN IDIOT! ITS 4 DOCTOR STRANGE OR IRON MAN (MANDARIN)!
AshleyWilliams - 7/26/2010, 7:15 PM
It means Epic movies.
jusme6 - 7/26/2010, 7:36 PM
I'm thinking Mandarin as well (didn't they say the 10 Rings would be powered by "alien technology").

@CDB: Great article. It's been a while since I actually read a whole article on here.

Did anyone else notice that the gauntlet at ComiCon was missing all of it's gems?
Upupandaway - 7/26/2010, 7:39 PM
They did have rumors about the Skrulls being introduced in Avengers 1. 2 could be Kree-Skrull War with the introduction/inclusion of some cosmic characters and 3 have Infinity Gauntlet.

I think Jim Carrey could make a good Eros.

@CDB- They could also sell it for a butt load on ebay.

@WOLVERINEDECADE- I too would really rather the animated thing happen as well.
WOLVERINEDECADE - 7/26/2010, 7:47 PM
@Upupandaway: someone better make a petition for Marvel to make it an Animated Cosmic event Movie!!! (watch out, DC!!)

@jusme6: missing? the gems are there, bub!!! right there and there...

peterparker420 - 7/26/2010, 7:48 PM
Here is a little fact I found!

First Appearance
Doctor Strange #13(1976)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
By peterparker23 at 2010-07-26

"The One Above All is the most powerful being of all realties. The Living Tribunal revealed to Doctor Strange, that he answers only to the One Above All. A being claiming to be the One Above All appeared to Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four, at the time of the Thing's death. Peter Parker was encouraged by an elderly man disguised as The One Above All, to be with his Aunt May who was dying at the time."
conformist21 - 7/26/2010, 7:58 PM
that should be left in Avengers 3,
Avengers 1, big global threat,
Avengers 2, 2 worlds fighting, bigger threat
Avengesr 3, Universal threat.

if dr. strange gets done in time, and maybe FF and silver surfer back in marvel's hands,
it can be very well possible,
for now i can settle for loki and some skrulls,
infinity gauntlet reveal was friggin crazy though
Acerimmer1 - 7/26/2010, 8:01 PM
Remind me again how many toes does the Hulk have, and is the infinity gauntlet a right or left gauntlet?
CaptainHero - 7/26/2010, 8:03 PM
Hi everyone long time reader, fist..uh first, time poster. I'm on this site most of my work day, keep up the great articles! I did notice the article from SDCC showing pics of the Gauntlet: alot of people said it was right-handed when in the comics, Thanos wore it on his left. I noticed 1 of the pics used for this article had it for his left hand, the 2nd pic shows it on his right..maybe Thanos can just imagine what it'd look like on his other hand and..poof.
WakeUp - 7/26/2010, 8:04 PM
lol so does this mean Kevin Pennington's mysterious character is Adam Warlock?
KeithM - 7/26/2010, 8:15 PM
@CB: Heh - well you already know I agree with this. :)

Good article
foxfan - 7/26/2010, 8:18 PM
corndog burglar - excellent post, i couldn't agree more. thanos is my favorite villain, heck, probably one of my favorite marvel characters, but i can't see the infinity gauntlet story arc working well for the avengers movie.
Upupandaway - 7/26/2010, 8:24 PM
They could use the Infinity Gauntlet to explain how they lost half of their characters to Fox and Sony! Excellent plot device! HA!
WireySpindell - 7/26/2010, 8:25 PM
Totally agree with everything you said.
Simonsonrules - 7/26/2010, 8:27 PM
Hope this means Marvel is somehow going to get the rights back to the Silver Surfer. The Thanos / Silver Surfer enmity is epic and provided the prelude to Starlin's original Infinity Gauntlet.
Mileena16 - 7/26/2010, 8:45 PM
@CaptainHero- Welcome! hehe that's how i started out on here, just looking and reading every day until i finally joined :)
Tobuttica - 7/26/2010, 8:51 PM
I don't know about the gauntlet. The Avengers seem to miniscule to battle Thanos.
Pooh - 7/26/2010, 8:52 PM
Are comics so bad these days that they have to go back twenty years and dig up a crap series like Infinity Gauntlet? Anyone who was alive back then will tell you that Infinity Gauntlet sucked. In fact most of the series back then sucked.
CorndogBurglar - 7/26/2010, 9:02 PM
thanks for all the great words guys!

and yeah, it just depends on who is drawing the comics. lol, sometimes the gauntlet is shown on Thanos's right hand, others its on the left. it plays no significance in who is wielding it. Also, Thanos is hardly the only person to gain control of it. Adam Warlock had it for a very long time. Maybe someone should try to find out what hand he wore it on. lol

personally, i can't believe people would really care about something like that, haha.
CorndogBurglar - 7/26/2010, 9:04 PM
@ Avalanche

no, from what i read, the Gauntlet is an actual movie prop. so it will at least be seen in the movie. whether it will be important or not, no one knows.
