Destroyer14's Review/Editorial Of The ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Premiere

Alright, we've all been hearing a lot of things about this new show. Here I present my review and thoughts of the premiere. Is it really as bad as everyone thought it would be? Read on after the jump.

Spider-Man is one of the greatest superheroes ever created. He ranks in popularity along with Superman and Batman. There have been quite a few shows with the Wall-Crawler, dating back to the 60's. It wasn't until 1994 when he got what is known as his greatest TV outing ever. The famous Animated Series is still being watched today. I remember years ago when they use to air the marathons on Saturday mornings, good times. I grew up watching the show, it's one of the prime factors of why I'm a fan of the character. It put story ahead of the action. Then on March 8th, 2008, the now-canceled Spectacular Spider-Man aired. I gotta be honest, I think the show is a little overrated, and this is coming from a longtime fan of the character. It had some good stories, but the overall tone was just too kiddish for my taste, and the animation was awful. A lot of fans were sad when it was canceled, I personally was ready for a new show. The thing about this show is that it's being produced by Marvel from the ground up. It would be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (So cameos by the Avengers? YES.) I remember being really excited when the first teaser was released, it looked to bring back everything the 90's show had. Then slowly more clips were released, the tone had changed. It looked to be a comedy. My expectations dwindled a bit, I really didn't know what to fully expect. After watching the premiere, I can safely that this is one of the most enjoyable shows currently on television.

You know how this show is constantly being compared to Batman: the Brave and the Bold? There are some similarities, but it IS different. (AKA, better.) There's just something about this show that makes it extremely fun and enjoyable. I technically shouldn't like some of the goofiness, such as Spidey going on a motorcycle and not knowing how to stop it, but a lot of it is genuinely funny. I also like how Spidey is portrayed, surprisingly. His dialogue in Spectacular I felt was never that great, here the writing is pretty strong and, well, funny. I also like how Spidey's powers are used, there are some really clever occurrences. (The scene in the school where he wisely used a table comes to mind.) I also like how his intelligence is used in combat, specifically in a scene with the Wizard using 'air hostages.' Really, I'm liking the way Spidey is being portrayed. And with a great voice (Drake Bell) to match, this TV show version of Spidey is right up there next to the 90's one. (Not quite up to that standard, but not a bad runner-up.)

This show is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What is the extent of that you ask? Well, how about Nick Fury AND Agent Coulson? That's right, it's pretty awesome and pretty funny at the same time. This Nick Fury matches his movie counterpart perfectly. (Just missing Sam Jackson's voice.) Agent Couslon looks to be a humorous part of the cast thanks to the funny plot twist at the end. People may not like some of the new versions of the characters. For example, this version of Aunt May is a hipster (I probably should find a better term) who does yoga AND beats Peter at video games. It's a different change of pace than the frail senior citizen we're used to. Norman Osborn and Harry Osborn remain pretty much the same as past incarnations, not a fan of either's design, too generic looking. Doc Ock's new design looks interesting from the few glimpses we get. Mary Jane wants to work for J. Jonah Jameson, now that's interesting.

I must say that the beginning of the first episode was perfect. JJJ (with J. K. Simmons as his voice, excellent choice) saying how Spider-Man's a menace and the latter narrating was just a perfect start. This show is definitely different, and I mean different. Whenever a new, major character appears, the screen turns to him with Spidey narrating who he is. And sometimes in fight, there's thhat 'TWAK!" and 'POW" words when Spidey punches or kicks someone. (Another similarity to the Brave and the Bold.) However, this is not a team-up show, this is still a Spidey-centric show. There's a story, but the show is all over the place. There really isn't a set 'arc' yet, but that's to be expected since it's just starting. One of the fun things about this show is the inclusion of other heroes. Here we have Iron Fist, Luk-I mean Power Man, White Tiger, and Nova. First of all, I just want to say that I can't stand when they turn a character younger to 'relate' to the audience or whatever logic they have. With that said, they were better than what I expected. I especially liked Luk-I mean Power Man. (I love how they made fun of the whole 'Luke Cage Power Man' thing.) I look forward to seeing more of these characters in the show. I love the in-jokes only Spidey fans can get. I laughed hard at the part where he said, "This is the part where I write my friendly neighborhood note, do you have a pen I can borrow?" (Then there's a jab at Amazing, saying how being Ultimate is better. Only comic fans would get that one. Also, the animation is top notch. Unlike the strange animation of Spectacular, this one is more traditional and akin to the 90's show. Spidey looks great, the animation is just top notch.

Overall, some may dislike this new series, some may even hate it. I on the hand had a blast watching it. (Remember, this is coming from a HUGE fan of the character, and of the 90's show.) Sometimes the tone could get a little TOO goofy for my tastes, but it's just so darn fun and enjoyable. Spidey has never been more of a great, humorous focus. This is a different kind of Spider-Man show, one that doesn't take itself too seriously. I really technically shouldn't like when something's like that, but there's something about this show that keeps me invested. It's Spider-Man, it's funny, it's superhero action with top notch animation. It is a good day to be a Spider-Man fan.

8/10.

awesome man, I pretty much enjoyed it as well. And I agree, spectacular was over rated and the animation was just silly

Good review
Spidey91 - 4/1/2012, 10:59 PM
loved it too.
I hurt my lungs laughing at the Spidey-mariachi : "hola! donde esta la biblioteca?" xD
Sanderman - 4/1/2012, 11:03 PM
Hm good review. I'll check it out tomorrow
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 4/1/2012, 11:06 PM
Spectacular Spider-man was a million times better than the 90's version.
MidNightWind - 4/1/2012, 11:07 PM
I don't hate the show, but I just can't get over the fact they cancelled spectacular when things were getting good. and if you ask me the 90's animated series felt more overated than spectacluar. plus I love josh keaton as spidey. drake bell is fine and he fits the ultimate version of peter parker quite well. I'm still neutral to the show, so I'll still give it the chance it deserves.
DarkKnight23 - 4/1/2012, 11:09 PM
I saw it. didn't care for it. Loved the Avengers though.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 4/1/2012, 11:10 PM
And this is coming from someone who grew up watching the 90's version. They nailed the character in Spectacular. I always felt that the 90's Spider-man was way too convoluted.
teethsoup - 4/1/2012, 11:24 PM
As soon as I saw what you said about Spectacular I passed on reading the rest, 90s is the over-rated one with choppy animation, Spectacular is amazing with fluid animation
TForbes - 4/1/2012, 11:27 PM
am I the only one that was a little off put by him breaking the 4th wall so often? that's deadpool's schtick not Spider-man's
xNightwingx - 4/1/2012, 11:28 PM
This one is good but Spectacular was much better. And though the '90's show was a little choppy it is still better. Doesn't mean you can't watch and enjoy the new one but it does feel a little more campy.
novaprime - 4/1/2012, 11:48 PM
As a kid I loved the 90s Spiderman the art is still great for its time even now. But the animation and scenes were to fast and the fighting scenes were terrible.. the amazing has do far been the best of all worlds for spidy but they need to cut the down the humor just a little
FriendlyNeighborhoodSpidey - 4/1/2012, 11:50 PM
I like the animation WAY better than spectacular. The show can be a little goofy, but I like it so far.
NextHero08 - 4/1/2012, 11:58 PM
Better than the 90's version? Someone needs to kill themselves. At least that show had a variety of villains and not a million versions of the same damn ones. Hell, we havent even had a decent incarnation of Carnage or Morbious since that show. 90s Spiderman is still the BEST!
TECHNODROME518 - 4/2/2012, 12:32 AM
@NextHero08 Well put sir.

Being a huge fan of the 90's show, and growing up watching it, I feel that Ultimate Spider-man is for a new generation. I love the animation, the voice talent, and the characters so far. My only beef with the show is Aunt May. It just seems weird to me to have her as a hipster. But things have to change, and if you don't change with them you get left behind. And it's a little corny at times, but very well placed cornyness.

If I was 8 years old again Ultimate Spider-man would be my show of shows, but I'm not 8 anymore, but still found myself really enjoying the show. I will continue to watch and enjoy.
TheBatman938865 - 4/2/2012, 12:45 AM
it was...aight lol its kind of ironic because spectacular is more serious then ultimate but the animations would fool you. personally...spectacular is still better..way better. because it didn't rely on dumb little anime humor shit (some funny) but to close to teen titans. i just don't like those anime type jokes. i mean its not a bad cartoon its got some cool shit going for it...nick fury, agent coulson, jk as JJ and the amazing stan lee! but the dumb jokes and peter's voice..they should have at least brought back Keaton. the actor that voices Harry should have played spidey i mean drake's voice is to ..idk..girly? kidish? i just don't like it lol over all its ...okay..just okay
TheRationalOne - 4/2/2012, 12:48 AM
Spider-Man is one of the most tongue and cheek characters in Marvel. He quips his entire fights. Who does that? Superheroes who don't take themselves too seriously, that's who. You guys bitch and moan about these characters not being taken seriously enough. Wolverine should be serious. Punisher should be serious. Spiderman should be light, funny, and only serious when necessesary. So this show looks perfect. I also enjoyed Spectacular, but think the animation was a little lacking. The 90's series, like the Xmen of the same era, holds a special spot in my heart. BUT, upon watching it as an adult, it holds up the least where Xmen, Batman TAS, and Superman are all still great. Spiderman was very choppy in the animation, and the integrated "3d" was horrible.

Emerald City Comic Con was fantastic by the way. Thanks for caring.
mrexcellent - 4/2/2012, 2:05 AM
@NextHero08:

90s Spider-man was pretty awesome, but I liked Spectacular better too. I vote against RidiculousFanboyDemands killing himself.

@Destroyer14:

Good review. I liked what I saw. It's different, but it pops. I didn't get too much of a Lois Lane vibe from MJ because there's enough of a backstory going to differentiate the two, even if the outline of the character is similar: female journalist who writes articles about the super guy.
mrexcellent - 4/2/2012, 2:19 AM
Sorry to double post, I also meant to say:

I loved the animation from TSSM, it was better than people give it credit for. There were some weak moments where the CGI was overdone (see final episode of the entire series for the worst offenses), but intermixed in that was a lot of pretty impressive stuff too. What was lacking were the character designs and the setting designs though.
Weedbeater - 4/2/2012, 2:24 AM
i prefer brave and the bold but this was fun for sure. Marvek should do a more complex show like Young Justice to grab my attention
Ceejay - 4/2/2012, 3:10 AM
Nothing beats the last season of Batman the Animated series, the animation was refined to pure gold and the action was second to none, legendary stuff!

Should have followed it up with a Nightwing series.
Name - 4/2/2012, 4:14 AM
Many of you are confsuing animation for charcater design. Spectacualr and Ultimate spiderman have far better animation than the 90s show. The 90's show made the mistake of overly detailed character models that didnt lend themselves well to animation. Overall Ultimate spiderman is the best looking marvel animated series yet. Top notch animation, makes it hard to understsand the need for the simple designs in spectacular spiderman. Good start imo
SuperSomething616 - 4/2/2012, 4:54 AM
So this is defo set in the cinematic universe...interesting...and very crafty of Marvel getting around who has the rights to Spidey...

As this is set in the cinematic universe it'll set up Spidey very nicely if Marvel ever get the rights back to do their own Spidey film...

Guess this being what it is now defuncs the rumours of a spidey cameo in the avengers...
ibravosp5 - 4/2/2012, 4:55 AM
I watched the premier and it's pretty good. Didn't mind the motorcycle. The fans saying "why is spidey riding a motorcycle, he doesn't need it" well don't worry, the creators knew what they were doing
xNightwingx - 4/2/2012, 5:50 AM
Some of those Marvel mash-ups were absolutely hilarious by the way.
fanboy03191 - 4/2/2012, 6:24 AM
Who else can't wait for when they introduce deadpool?
Wildaniel - 4/2/2012, 6:29 AM
Too childish, lol, I think I will still watch it since I love Spiderman.

Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes is still AWESOME!
BIGBMH - 4/2/2012, 6:30 AM
I was able to find the first part online, but not the second part. Definitely disagree with your feelings on this in comparison to Spectacular. The only thing I like better in this show is the art style. Like Name pointed out, Spectacular still had great animation.
Gusto - 4/2/2012, 7:41 AM
SexyResults - 4/2/2012, 8:16 AM
I loved the show. The humor was way more over the top than past incarnations but they made it work very well in my opinion. I loved the dipictions of Iron Fist and Luke Cage (along with the other two) dispite being teenages now. But the part that really made me laugh was the scene with Curt Connor's pretending to lack a right hand when meeting Spidey, though I wonder why he has both hands in this universe. And am I the only one who thought that Aunt May was a MILF in this show.
ClarkFarley2012 - 4/2/2012, 8:37 AM
This show is funny as hell. Fourth wall eh? Let's not forget it was Spidey not Deadpool who was cracking jokes first. This is a good fresh take on Spiderman though.
MovieTheaterLad - 4/2/2012, 8:47 AM
"and the animation was awful."

EXCUSE ME?

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over how much better the fight scenes were choreographed, shot, and animated in Spectacular Spider-Man. And for the record, the voice-acting, writing, and character development were alot better. Characters were even allowed to throw punches and hurt each other, as opposed to the 90's show, where all he could do was shoulder tackle, web guys, and then run away.

The 90's animated series does NOT hold up or age well. The pacing was bad, the animation was wonky and reused way too much, and it didn't develop characters well enough. Spectacular Spider-Man actually had those things, unfortunately it was cancelled.

"It would be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe"

No it isn't. This cartoon is Earth TRN123. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is Earth 199999.
SymbioteJoker - 4/2/2012, 8:56 AM
Lets be honest with ourselves, I too loved the 90's spidey but looking back it wasnt that good. Really Spectacular is the superior out of the three and should not have been cancelled. Dont get me wrong Ultamates animation is far better but the humor itself seems to take you out of the story and feels a little jarring at times with transitions.Spectacular nailed spideys humor and got serious when it needed to be. And I cant get behind the idea of younger heroes and hiim leading a team. My thoughts on it anyway
superotherside - 4/2/2012, 9:22 AM
Can't wait to watch it. :)
SUPERBATSPIDERMAN - 4/2/2012, 10:48 AM
I thought the show was cool and it made me laugh multiple times. The thing I thought was cool was how they had Agent Coulson on the show and they made him look like the actor from the movies. Agent Coulson is awesome.
skot888 - 4/2/2012, 11:24 AM
I honestly didn't like it. While Young Justice, Avengers, and hell even Green Lantern the writing makes you feel teh show is for all ages, Ultimate Spider-Man was very very very very very kiddie. The humor was bad, and just ugh was not a fan. Avengers was good though!
spectre88 - 4/2/2012, 11:38 AM
I dislike this show, but will keep watching it because it is now officially part of the Marvel AU. I HATE that they made Iron Fist, Nova, and Cage all teenagers. That was stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid. I also don't like all those little side joke animations they do. I wasn't a fan of the Spectacular Spider-Man's art, which made it feel "kiddy", but putting the art aside I feel Ultimate Spider-Man is more of a kiddy cartoon than Spectacular Spider-Man was. Just by virtue of the way the cartoon presents itself. Too bad, all of these "mistakes" they made are now cannon. We're probably going to have to live with these for years to come. So, I guess all we can do now is get used to it whether we like it or not.
spectre88 - 4/2/2012, 11:42 AM
...then again maybe it was Jeff Lobe's idea of an April fool's prank.
Dedpool - 4/2/2012, 11:42 AM
Spidey and his Amazing Friends + Teen Titans = Ultimate Spiderman! Sorry Spectacular for the WIN!!!
thewolfx - 4/2/2012, 12:03 PM
i dont like your review
JoMar - 4/2/2012, 1:05 PM
I 100% agree with this review. This show has a lot of potential especially with the introduction of character development in the first and second episode alone. A lot of fan fare as well.

It had more of a Teen Titans feel about it that I like where it was part comedy and had it's serious tones that was balanced very well.

The animation and character design is the best that I have seen since the old 80's character design and 90's animation.

For those who doubt that this will be a success, I have one name that will calm your nerves. "PAUL DINI". If you don't know who that is, raise your hand to all of those who are fans of the following: Batman: TAS, Superman: TAS, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited (the greatest comic book series of all time), Teen Titans, etc.

Nuff Said!!!!
Action - 4/2/2012, 1:32 PM
Ultimate spiderman was pretty good. The beginning was alittle boring however the show got better as the audience learned more about pete's life. I wish there was less jokes and more interaction between characters.
Cosmic1 - 4/2/2012, 1:37 PM
Having been around long enough to have seen the 60's spider-man in re-runs and the spider-man shows of the early 80's, the 90's show was OK, but still had many flaws and could have had better story lines. I was quite pleased with the spectacular spider-man and feel that ultimate spider-man is a cross between saved by the bell, teen titans, superhero it will probably do well with kids like my 5 year old nephew. It would have been a better show if they didn't try to pull it so deep into the marvel universe and a better title would have been spider-man and the teen avengers. Spider-man has plenty of allies and enemies without having to make him an agent of S.H.E.I.L.D. That is just cheesy and marvel/Disney is trying to capitalize on the avengers and shove it in peoples face as much as possible instead of focusing on making a good spider-man cartoon. I would of rather seen a new twist on spider-man and his amazing friends. The animation and design of the characters is amazing, but the story line and concept is far from ultimate, but then again this show wasn't aimed at 30 something year olds.
