It was really a surprise when it was announced that Roberto Orci would be helming the new Star Trek film. The news was met with mixed responses from fans. Well Orci decided to open up about the film , revealing a little about the planned setting.

"In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie.  So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space."

So does this mean we won't be seeing earth at all in Star Trek 3?  It's certainly a major departure from the last two films which were set on earth or near earth, never really venturing deep into space.

Orci then joked about the movie's villians. "The Horta is actually the villain in the next one – no – they are in deep space now, so lets see what’s out there."

Are you looking forward to the next Star Trek film? Leave your thoughts in the usual place.

I hope they go to war with the Klingons in the next one.

Most likely seems like a War with the Klingons with the third movie.

I really liked Into Darkness. I'm excited to see where this goes.
MexicanChinman - 6/26/2014, 4:10 PM
Loved the first two.
McNyagano - 6/26/2014, 4:11 PM
Into Darkness sucked. Like Khan though, he was menacing. The whole super blood thing was nonsense and I'm astounded they used the same shit in TASM2.
GeneralZod1138 - 6/26/2014, 4:13 PM
Two Words:

The Borg

I really enjoyed Into Darkness, and I'm glad they're going to try to keep it in space this time. Best parts from Into Darkness came from when they were in space.

@McNyagano - spock is not pleased with your attitude

CyberBishop - 6/26/2014, 4:18 PM
The Horta??? The blob from Devil in the Dark???????
Arrowhead77 - 6/26/2014, 4:19 PM
First 2 were fantastic! They made me a Star Trek fan now, when I never cared about the series or movies before. Now I am in the Star Trek over Star Wars group. But we will see if I stay that way in the future...

I saw this on The Wil Wheton Project... J.J. Abrams promised Trekkies another movie:

@McNyagano - I was going to go check out TASM2 down at the dollar theater. Thanks for changing my mind.
Nomis1800 - 6/26/2014, 4:27 PM
First one was good. Though the villains were a bit lacking imo… Second one had a better villain but the film was overwhelming in it's totality. Even though the IMAX parts were great. I hope Orci uses them for the third one.
FordEl - 6/26/2014, 4:27 PM
@BlindJustice

Yes. Listen to one fanboy's opinion. I personaly really enjoyed the performances and characters in TASM2. Yeah it had a lot of things going on, but I never felt the movie got lost. But thats constantly debated.
I give TASM2 a 7.5/10

Really don't like that he's directing. There were so many other better directors. He's JJ's boy so he gets in. It's who ya know in Hollywood. I know he's familiar with the franchise being the writer but he's a novice in directing and they're giving him a massive blockbuster as his first film...has he even made short films
ABLEE337 - 6/26/2014, 4:28 PM
I haven't seen Horta since the last time I ordered Domino's Pizza.

Hell Yah, love the new Star Trek movies. Hopefully Bob Orci can keep the bus rolling with these movies.
CommanderShepard - 6/26/2014, 4:31 PM
The Gorn would be cool.
Jollem - 6/26/2014, 4:31 PM
i currently give asm 2 9.25/10
Jollem - 6/26/2014, 4:32 PM
and to all the new star trek haters:

McNyagano - 6/26/2014, 4:33 PM
My bad, I don't know much about the Star Trek universe and didn't know who Horta is lol
AlphaMasterFlex - 6/26/2014, 4:34 PM
I really liked the 2009 reboot but wasn't impressed with Into Darkness at all. It looks like they brought in fresh writers to work with the previous team so hopefully this movie is an improvement. Also TASM 2 was [frick]ing trash!
KINGPEN266 - 6/26/2014, 4:41 PM
InfiniteMonkey - 6/26/2014, 4:42 PM
I hope the writers don't take 4 years to make this one and just copy and paste from an existing awesome movie already.
Load of bollocks that one.
Jollem - 6/26/2014, 4:43 PM
FordEl - 6/26/2014, 4:43 PM
How does one hate "Into Darkness". Some people have to always hate on something I guess.
BlindJustice - 6/26/2014, 4:45 PM
@FordEl - Something about 'super blood' just reminds me too much of a cheesy metachlorians idea. I was unimpressed by the first TASM...which I took my family to see at the dollar theater as well. I might just order it On Demand or Red Box...cheaper route.
KINGPEN266 - 6/26/2014, 4:47 PM
BlindJustice - 6/26/2014, 4:48 PM
@FordEl - I've heard the reasoning behind some fanboy's/Trekies hatred being due to everything from Kahn not being Asian to just not liking Bennedict Cumberbatch. So yeah...it's similar to the non-Marvel Studio film hatred and the Star Wars prequels hatred. It will always be there no matter how good the movies are.
Jollem - 6/26/2014, 4:50 PM
@FordEl - right. i watched it a week or two ago. great movie. great star trek movie
Jollem - 6/26/2014, 4:51 PM

yeah
bs77 - 6/26/2014, 4:55 PM
Into Darkness was an extremely well made film. Yeah, it had several plot devices, and was essentially a remake of Wrath, but it was entertaining and the acting was superb all around. It's future-tech was impressive and was in the same vein of the originals. It was fantastic looking movie. I look forward to this series continuing. I used to wish the original actors weren't so old when they filmed all the original movies, and now I'm sort of getting to see the young ambitious less experienced Enterprise crew I always wanted. I hope Orci doesn't mess this up. I haven't enjoyed Star Trek this much since I was a kid.

If the next Star Wars can achieve the same level of realism in its F/X that Star Trek had, then we'll see a rebirth for the Star Wars franchise. The prequels were so ridiculous looking with CGI that didn't look like it belonged in a video game much less alongside real actors. Please save Star Wars JJ!!!
