Todd McFarlane made the trip from Pheonix, AZ to Tempe to be one of the lucky viewers of the Wolverine premier.

IESB caught up with the comic legend to get some dig on his latest projects.

From IESB:

Todd McFarlane tells us he has five offers on the table to do a new Spawn film. From big special effects studio budgets to a smaller indie budgets that he hopes to be able to write and direct himself. Which will he choose?

Will Spawn be resurrected at the box office to fight the forces of Hell, or will we just end up with another John Leguizamo in bad clown makeup?

From the video on IESB, McFarlane says:

"To where I'm leaning which is actually sort of a smaller budget. Just keep it down, keep it dark, Keep it grungy. I mean, I've got two teenage daughters, and I’m trying to come up with an idea that I've been living with for ten years, that would actually get them and their dates to go to it, and it's not a comic book movie, it's just a scary movie, a creepy movie. It happens to have… everythings real, except for one element which happens to be the character we know as Spawn. So it's not going to be a super villain verses a superhero or anything like that stuff. It's just gonna be a tight movie. Think of 'Departed' with something sort of moving in the shadows a little bit."

McFarlane specifies his preference for a smaller studio because that will give him more writing and producing control. He also goes on to say that all the rights regarding the HBO animated series will revert back to him at the end of the year. He expressed his desire to get another animated version of Spawn going using newer technologies.

Personally, I was never a fan of the comic book, nor the live action movie, but I did love the HBO animated series. The animation was phenomenal, and to think what he may do with new technology is just mouth-watering.

So, Mcfarlane is using the story formulas from The Departed and Dark Horror Films to revamp SPAWN for a new film adaptation.

I'm gonna throw you some gold, Todd. This time around: have Sam & Twitch in a supporting sub-plot for this story and pit SPAWN against CHAPEL, ANGELA, or OVERTKILL! Save VIOLATER for the sequel.

You have some serious work to do to redeem this franchise, Todd McFarlane, because the ONLY great thing to come out of the original film was the Soundtrack!

So get crackin.'

Freakin' awesome! Spawn is what first got me into comics, and @ SpiderMan209, I agree. The first film was cool cuz of the effects at the time but it definitely had a weak story. They need to stay true to the comics. I mean the HBO series was great, so we obviously know that the story can translate well. They just need to take their time and not just throw it all together. Also even though I couldn't see him as a villain until at least the second flick, I would love to see Redeemer.

SWEET
iNsaneMilesy - 4/30/2009, 2:05 AM
Hmm, I'd like to see it remade, given tech nowdays, and put enough money behind it. Might revive the popularity of the character.
jimdrums - 4/30/2009, 3:54 AM
Special effects design is a little more advanced nowadays, its definately time to make another Spawn movie.
RorMachine - 4/30/2009, 5:39 AM
His movie idea sound [frick]ING AWFUL!. No supernatural or comic book elements except for Spawn? wow, sounds exiting! I asume he wont be basing it on any of the award winning comics of his, which he doesnt even like!! What a tool.
willbhome - 4/30/2009, 6:19 AM
ohmy, THAT was a tough trip for Todd: Phoenix to Tempe?
bfd - he lives about two miles from Tempe, and actually has to drive through the west edge of it if he wants to get to MOST of Phoenix!

It's McFarlanes baby and he should be the one writing it! Good news indeed.
Spike1980 - 4/30/2009, 7:12 AM
It's about damn time he makes another Spawn movie. But why go with a low budget.
VenomIsOnMyRibs - 4/30/2009, 8:35 AM
Todd McFarlane is a genius when it comes to art, I buy all of his figures religiously and his comics are great. Unfortunately the SPAWN movie kind of blew ass acting wise, and story wise. I felt like it went really quickly and ya know....there needs to be more cape in there man!! Spawns cape is the shit its him, I'd be scared alone just seeing the cape in a dark alley let alone him.

I'm sure if McFarlane has total control he will make it an awesome movie cant wait for more news on it.
parascythe - 4/30/2009, 8:39 AM
low budget? scary movie? no supervillains vs superhero?... i hope its not a full length film of a TALES FROM THE CREEP KEEPER...
gibbyblaylock - 4/30/2009, 9:27 AM
The main reason Spawn continues down the path of suckiness and obscurity is not because the story wasn't grounded enough in reality. It's because Spawn is an un-original, derivitave character. We've already seen the Ghost Rider and Constantine movies. Let's move on. Forget this movie.
gibbyblaylock - 4/30/2009, 9:29 AM
I misspelled derivative.

I guess with bigger budget there would be more voices to have their say in the creative process -- something I don't think McFarlane would been too keen on.

Sounds like a "Friday the 13th" or "Nightmare on Elm St." thing he's shooting for. A lone supernatural entity in the real world. Thing is, it's been done to death and his teenage daughters don't buy his comics, his fans do, so if he can turn down his ego and listen to the fans he might start going in a better direction.

Tobuttica - 4/30/2009, 1:06 PM
I like Violator/Clown, but I think it would be kick ass with the Redeemer!
Betty - 4/30/2009, 1:44 PM
@SpiderMan209

I agree with the sam and twitch idea. But i think it should go a little differently. I think he should do both. The first movie will be sam and twitches story with elements of spawn. The second movie should be the full on spawn movie with sam and twitch supporting.
rottencotten - 4/30/2009, 1:46 PM
I have been waiting for this for a long time...I remember seeing Spawn when it first came out...and thought the effects for that movie were f*(king awesome!!...to see it remade with today's effects...would be sick...I think Tod should go with Lionsgate...Then this movie would still be on a smaller budget...but with a known name behind it...can't wait to hear more news...
adamrich81 - 4/30/2009, 2:43 PM
You friggin fan boys are so formulaic. As a huge spawn fan, I think McFarland's idea is phenomenal and I hope to see it to fruition.

The writing in Spawn was torment, misery...there was subtext. It was a 'smart' comic if you bothered to read it and not flip to the part where the bad guy shows up and look at all the pretty inking.

He once mentioned a Sam and Twitch driven movie without even seeing spawn, except for maybe in the shadows. It would be brilliant I think. And most importantly a departure from the "Origin-doing well fight two bad guys-do a darker movie-reboot" formula for every comic book movie series so far.

Yay McF, F the rest of you.
dbzfan - 4/30/2009, 3:09 PM
WHAT THE [frick]!!!!??? WHY GOD WHY?!! I want a reboot so bad but not if they are just going to [frick] it up...AGAIN!
Minotauro - 4/30/2009, 3:33 PM
I already said this once...
Pretty much alot of people on here dont do research?

shibazz - 4/30/2009, 4:25 PM
I think it should be made for HBO series . Live action and creepy bad assity
BLADE4040 - 4/30/2009, 5:39 PM
Not really a fan of the SPAWN comicbooks and the movie I thought was OK,but I do like McFarlane so we'll see.
alphamale80 - 4/30/2009, 5:39 PM
ok lets make a movie call spawn but not show him keep him in the shadows (lame) so what would the story be about I wonder. Or how about this bring him in as the bad good guy in batman3 it would be like in the comic books oh yeah I forgot no "super" hero's in Nolan's universe.
AltRockFan - 4/30/2009, 6:56 PM
Yeah, I had read an interview a few years ago about a possible reboot that he was planning on doing with his own money (low budget). It sounded an awful lot like what he's saying here. He want's to keep the main character in the shadows. Sure, make it dark and seedy, but he was talking in his earlier interview like you'd seriously never even see him. WTF? I loved the Spawn comic books, at least for the first year or two. And the original story line would translate perfectly to film, so why mess with it? I agree with Spiderman that Sam and Twitch should be included too.

Anyone else want to a movie based on The Maxx? lol
Betty - 4/30/2009, 9:16 PM
This is gonna be tough on mcfarland. If he makes the sam and twitch driven movie, he could repeat over and over that spawn is in the shadows and NOT the main character and STILL he would be reprimanded for ruining another spawn movie. ITs gonna be tricky.

Yes i would love to see a MAXX movie. But all out balls in your face MAXX universe. None of this adapted for cinema crap!
Hyper stylized, like speed racer! Half the problem with comicbook movies is that they are afraid to go balls DEEP!

I say sink them BALLS!
