Man of Steel: Who Should Be The Villain In The Sequel

Thoughts on the upcoming movie, feelings on the character and who I think should be the villain in the potential sequel.

I'm going to start this off saying I dislike the character as much as I dislike the villain, Electro. For me, that's pretty bad. I've never liked Superman, I've always thought that the only way to beat him was to find Kryptonite has always been ridiculously cheap. Never liked it. That's been my biggest complaint with the character. Put, that aside now.

Man of Steel has always been iffy for me. While the cast excites me and the idea of Superman with Snyder's visual style has always felt like an amazing thing to watch. I can't help but feel this is going to be a hit or miss cause of who the director is. I've seen 3 Zack Snyder films. 300, Dawn of the Dead and Watchmen. I though Dawn of the Dead was pretty good, 300 is over rated. Never cared much for it and Watchmen was brilliant (the film's visual look is gorgeous). I refuse to watch Sucker Punch and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. The original Superman film that starred Christopher Reeve, I felt was very good and Superman Returns was decent. Those are the only Superman films I have ever seen. I can't help but have mixed feelings on Man of Steel, hopefully the trailer next month will give me more positive feelings about the film.

The casting for Man of Steel though is great. Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as General Zod. But, the best castings are Kevin Costner as Johnathan Kent, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Russell Crowe as Jor-El and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White. What is not to like about that cast? Casting those actors in the roles were genius. That casting list is like if not better than The Dark Knight trilogy cast and the cast for The Amazing Spider-Man. I'm no analyst but if I were to predict the money that Man of Steel will possibly make (including 3-D) I'm guessing between 500-850 million. That's just my opinion. There is nothing about the story that has intersted me into wanting to see it. The footage from comic con (there is a recording on youtube) looked impressive but nothing to get pumped up about in my opinion. It's also rumored, if not confirmed that this will be the start of the DC cinematic universe. It can be the start that Iron Man was but, that is a huge risk. DC has only had real success with Batman and Superman depending on the Superman movie. Green Lantern sucked, Catwoman sucked and I won't even touch Jonah Hex. DC and Warner Bros. aren't that good at making movies, which means every movie they make that isn't The Dark Knight trilogy is a huge risk.

Potential sequel

I have a villain in mind for the potential Man of Steel sequel, that villain is....Metallo.

He is my favorite Superman villain, if I were to have one. I like the idea (and I know it's a reused one, I'm pretty sure of it) of having Lex Luthor creating Metallo as a way to defeat Superman. Discovering Kryptonite causes Luthor to put it in Metallo thus creating a formidable opponent for Superman. I am not a fan of the idea of him expanding into a giant, metal monster. But, keep it basic. I think if executed well, it would be great to see on screen. Not to mention it being nice to see a different Superman villain on the big screen for a change.

What did I just read?..."my favorite character, if I had one?"
DrDoom - 11/13/2012, 12:00 PM
Metallo should have been the bad guy for this movie, rather than bloody Zod.
Morbius - 11/13/2012, 12:03 PM
It will be Lex Luthor
Spideyguy94 - 11/13/2012, 12:26 PM
No offense but if you don't like superman don't write about what should be done with him in his movies. I don't particularly like deadpool but I'm not going to write about what should be in his movie because its coming from Someone who doesn't care for the character or the source material
Minato - 11/13/2012, 12:28 PM
Brainiac
justified1 - 11/13/2012, 12:30 PM
maybe we should wait to see how this movie turns out before we turn our eyes to the future.
thebearjew - 11/13/2012, 12:54 PM
^^^^^ ya i agree i think a tad bit of lex luthors villianess side showing and mainly be brainiac and then have lex as the main villian in the third
marvel72 - 11/13/2012, 1:25 PM
lets see if its any good first,i don't want to get my hopes up just to see them dashed.
Darklypse - 11/13/2012, 1:59 PM
Well, if it was Metallo, I think Lex and Bizzaro should be included too. Personally I think it should be Brainiac. I also want the makers of the Arkham games to do a Superman one with all his rogues.

M3T4LL0 - 11/13/2012, 3:02 PM
The villain should be.... hence my user name!!! METALLO. Or Brainiac.. he would be amazing if done right. I'd like to see Doomsday at some point as well.
iuhgluiblbjjkhkjhkljh - 11/13/2012, 3:39 PM
Judging from the fact that you dislike Superman for his kryptonite weakness, you sound pretty ignorant. Anyways, Metallo wouldn't be good as the main villain. He'd be too much of an action villain, wouldn't give enough plot. Personally, I think Atomic Skull would be much better.
Facade - 11/13/2012, 4:10 PM
Do we have to have a sequel to MOS? Maybe we should wait and see if it deserves one, first.
EdgyOutsider - 11/13/2012, 4:44 PM
Yes, I understand it might feel pointless to write about a character I never liked and I know that I contradict myself by saying that I hate the kryptonite being his only weakness but that's the gimmick I would want in the sequel. I am also quite aware that Superman and Electro are completely different characters, I was just explaining in that statement how much I dislike the character.

I don't make editorials to satisfy people's opinions. I make the editorials I make to either express an opinion on something or share an idea of mine. If you don't like it, then it's not really my problem.
Tainted87 - 11/13/2012, 4:52 PM
What exactly does ELECTRO have to do with Superman?

I'd chalk it up to a typo considering your love for Spider-man, but then you mentioned him again in another comment....

Have I entered the Twilight Zone?
dellamorte1872 - 11/13/2012, 5:47 PM
the author is comparing ancillary characters in another title synonymous with this rogues ranking in Supes mythology thats the ELECTRO statement crap i see what the kid was getting at why is everyone so animistic? METALLO really shoulda been in SUPERMAN 1 hence MAN OF STEEL the double meaning there in the title coulda been awesome! great marketing too if they did it my way lol but for 2? brainiac then 3 doomsday and lex. but that mirrors all fans opinions and could make sense in a trilogy
Tenaciousbt - 11/13/2012, 6:09 PM
Article is "weird." Why write about a character you don't like?

Sequel talk it WAYYYY TO SOON, but I would have liked to see Darkseid in this one, so I am hoping for him in any potential sequel.

Darkseid is a guy that is not only smart like Lex but as powerful or arguable more powerful than Superman.
Supes17 - 11/13/2012, 7:25 PM
I think Brainiac would be a perfect choice.

General audience members who aren't familiar with Metallo would just dismiss him as a "Terminator Rip-off"

Metallo is one of my favorite Superman villains, though
gamecreatorjj - 11/13/2012, 9:55 PM
I want them to mix it up, it has gotten so cliche that the big bad villain, the worst of the worst has to show up in the third film, I wan't them to use someone like Doomsday, Lex's Ultimate plan, maybe even Darksied, this time I want them to do their end of times moment in the second film, only because in this day and age, we cant expect sequels, so they need start putting the arch enemy in the first film, Ironman didn't do this, Incredible Hulk didn't do this, Avenegers, Green Lantern, Batman Begins, Spiderman, Amazing Spiderman, Ghost Rider, These films aren't guarenteed sequels anymore, so they need to stop setting up trilogies and sagas, and get that one good story told instead of the whole film being lead up for a sequel, Avengers did that, Green Lantern, Incredible Hulk, IronMan, complete the story, then create a sequel, thats what creates my distaste for the MCU, its all build for the next thing, even what all the MCU films were builing up to, was build up for something "bigger", which is why Nolan's Batman films, Burtons Batman Films, Superman I &II, X Men, First Class, etc are held at high regard, mone of those films need a sequel to work
Darklypse - 11/13/2012, 11:55 PM
Wait, you hate his Kryptonite gimmick, even though Metallo has a heart of the Kryptonite... Kay. Well, I think Metallo could only work if Lex and Bizzaro were there. I still personally want Brainiac. I'd only consider Doomsday for the last film if he could actually talk like in the cartoons and CADMUS was involved in the plot.
aresww3 - 11/14/2012, 12:06 AM
bloody hell man, if you´re not a fan don´t bother. Lex and Braniac are his best villains and work well together.
CorndogBurglar - 11/14/2012, 5:11 AM
Superman can be killed by Kryptonite and magic. Also, ironically enough, the only time he has actually beaten and killed in the comics it was done from being pummeled to death.

Thats right, he was beaten to the point of death by fist fighting. No kryptonite or magic were used in the entire story. So your logic as to why you dont like Superman doesnt really make a lot of sense...mostly because its wrong.
CorndogBurglar - 11/14/2012, 5:18 AM
Gamecreator

The MCU is known for being the most like the comics. Its a unified world and the tone of that world is very much like thw books. So, even though i get what hour saying and it does make sense, you should also note that the comics are constantly building toward the next thing as well.

Even when a major event or storyline ends in the comics, it ends with the groundwork being laid for the next big thing. So by the MCU doing the same thing, they are actually being a lot like the comics.

I get what u mean when you say these movies are not guaranteed sequels anymore, but i never understood why some people complain about the MCU always building to other things in the solo movies. Its kind of the entire point, and again, its done all the time in the books.
tonytony - 11/14/2012, 11:51 AM
Another hating article from a marvel fanboy. Bullshit
EdgyOutsider - 11/14/2012, 11:57 AM
@tonytony: All I said was that I really dislike the character. I wasn't hating on anything. I like the original Superman movie, the first two Burton Batman movies and The Dark Knight trilogy. I am even looking forward to The Flash. So again, how am I a hating Marvel fanboy? I just hope that next month's Man of Steel trailer give me more of a positive feeling towards this movie because the director is hit or miss despite the fact that I really love the cast.
EdgyOutsider - 11/14/2012, 12:03 PM
@corndogburglar: I said that Kryptonite was his only weakness and that is one of the biggest reasons I have always disliked the character. I know that Doomsday kicked his ass. So, no I am not wrong.
LP4 - 11/14/2012, 4:59 PM
All I see here is bullying. So what. Because the guy doesn't like Superman, that means he has no right to voice his opinion about the upcoming film?

Geez, grow up people.

gamecreatorjj - 11/14/2012, 6:09 PM
@jokerfanhaha the point of not being gaurenteed sequels went more to TASM, Green Lantern, Incredible Hulk

@corndogburglar this is true, but at the end of the day they are still movies, not comics, and its okay when movies build towards a bigger picture, Ironman and Incredible Hulk build towards Avengers, but they work withouth them, Ironman 2, Thor, Captain America need the avnengers to be complete films, if i saw captain america, thor or iroman 2, without knowing there would be an avengers film, and believing this was the last one, I would have come out of the theater feeling so cheated, like I only got half of the characters story, and the Avengers NEEDS a sequel to work, and the previous films to work, if you don't know how Captain America ended, then you are lost, if you never saw Thor, it makes no sense, and quite abit is expected to be explained in future movies, it is like a comic universe, but each film needs to exsist on its own, the best sequels work without seeing the first film, T2, Empire Strikes Back, The Dark Knight, these don't need the first film to be fantastic movies, and their orignal films, don't need the sequel, Imagine Hypothetically, after Captain America came out, Disney/Paramount went bankrupt, and the Avengers never happened, would Thor, Captain America, and Ironman 2 be completed films?
CorndogBurglar - 11/14/2012, 7:25 PM
Lizard

Actually you said, and i quote, "the only way to beat him is to find Kryptonite."

Considering the fact that he can be beaten with magic AND by catching an old fashioned ass beating, yes, you are in fact wrong.
EdgyOutsider - 11/14/2012, 7:27 PM
I agree with LP4

@LP4: thanks :)
MrNikauL - 11/15/2012, 11:28 PM
I hope Lex has a cameo in the credits.
Foxpaw - 11/16/2012, 4:22 AM
It's a Nolan influenced series. So there will be 3. The first is Superman's arrival - which announces his existence as an alien. Though he'll defeat hostile aliens, the world would be cautious of him. Thus creating a massive public backlash, setting up the sequel, with it campaigned by Lex Luthor (his "character" type and stance will be introduced by Meloni's character in Man of Steel.) Lex Luthor would "represent mankind" against Superman, and in doing so put mankind in harm, whereby Superman must come to their aid. It test's the character's nerve as an alien, a new superhero, a member of society and a family member. As a result the people will realise that good and evil lies in the individual not in a species or race. Lex Luthor will achieve exactly the opposite of what he hoped. And mankind would embrace Superman as their champion. Which sets up one mad finale where hearts could be shattered just when everyone was starting to get along. Superman may die, I doubt it. But the final villain should be the equivalent of Bane. Maybe Doomsday. Who knows. As for the first sequel, I'd say Lex Luthor and (human military forces maybe) and another alien threat perhaps - but unlikely - linked to Lex Luthor's schemes.
Riddlemethis82 - 11/16/2012, 4:25 AM
Lizard 1 - everyone deserves an opinion and can see your not knocking dc in general,,,,,, but you have to admit that saying supermans only weakness being kryptonite was wrong sir, as previously stated, you missed out magic and brute force...
EdgyOutsider - 11/16/2012, 5:40 AM
Riddlemethis82: It was wrong. I won't lie. In my eyes, considering how little I know about the character other than the basics, the only weaknesses Superman has is Kryptonite and Doomsday. I've never found anything else to be his weakness. In my eyes, magic is just kryptonite without being a solid object.
jingorot - 11/16/2012, 7:16 AM
"I dislike the character"

stopped reading there. i refuse to read a passionless article.

Darklypse - 11/16/2012, 2:01 PM
@Foxpaw

Oh [frick] Nolan's style. I've grown to hate his Batman so much now. When I first saw this I was thrilled, now I fear they will [frick] over Superman's character.

Anyway, Lex Luthor being it will be fine. People say he's lame and overused. Well, maybe not be in a film with him as the only villain, but others too. If people say the character is lame they should watch the DCAU and then see how he can hold his own.

Anyway, as we have no idea if this is linked in anyway to the upcoming Justice League having Luthor and CADMUS throwing shit at Superman would be good. Bizarro, Metallo, etc.

Hopefully they won't go the route of Nolan and say "[frick] they other characters" and actually introduce those in the Superman family. Kara for example. If CADMUS was in any way involved then we have Superboy. I really, really hope this won't be more Nolan-esque shit.
gamecreatorjj - 11/16/2012, 2:20 PM
@jokerfanhaha i Knew that would come up, but never once do they say "avengers" and it is only mentioned after credits, throughout thor, cap, and IM2, they talked about forming a team, dangers to come, and each of those films lack resolution, Incredible had a resoulation to the point where we want to see more, but we don't have to see more
CorndogBurglar - 11/16/2012, 4:53 PM
"magic is just kryptonite without being a solid object"?

What does that mean? The DC Universe has an entire corner strictly dedicated to magic and how it works.

And Doomsday isnt a weakness to Superman, its the ass beating he threw him. Other characters are fully capable of the same thing, namely Darkseid. He is definately capable of beating Superman in a fist fight.

Im not trying to be a dick, but you just keep showing how little you know about Supes as well as the entire DCU.
DCfan89 - 11/16/2012, 5:34 PM
brainiac and luthor for sequel. have brainiac double cross luthor
friendlyfire - 11/16/2012, 11:40 PM
Metallo would be pretty cool to see, he's a great villain. But I think Superman is at his best when he's saving the whole world. Metallo doesn't necessarily pose that kind of threat. Brainiac does. They'd probably be better off using Brainiac in the sequel.
