I read a similar article that said that they never even met with Marvel. It all just started with a comment Neil said to Del Toro during production of Hellboy 2. Next thing you know, bam, they were rumored to write and direct a Doctor Strange movie.

Makes sense that Marvel would pass on that - comic book movies were no sure thing back then, much less a sustainable method of success for a studio just starting out. Leading the charge with a Dr. Strange movie was probably something Marvel wasn't comfortable with (regardless of GDT or Gaiman's involvement), nor would audiences even be ready for something like that.

Now, though? Damn, that'd be something special indeed.

@TheRedCondom Gaiman met with Marvel in the very early days and they asked him what he wanted to do, and he said Doctor Strange. He did a little work on the script and talked with GDT but it never went anywhere. So, Gaiman DID meet with Marvel but GDT never did.

GDT is a hit or miss when it comes to his work. Wouldve been interesting to see if he put more of his character-driven stamp on it rather than this plot-driven one.

Gaiman. Del Toro.

One of my favorite comic writer & one of my favorite director.

This may have killed my interest in the MCU outside of Daredevil and Russo brothers directed film.

You hire shitty writers & an unproven director for a Spidey film but say no to Gaiman and del Toro.

del Toro seems to have the worst luck out of any director with trying to get a project made. You always hear about a project he's developed or developing that eventually falls through. Even his videogame projects get canned. I'm sure this happens a lot to other directors as well but it always seems to be del Toro that we hear the most about. I feel sorry for the guy!

Hollywood really needs to get their priorities straightened out

I definitely would have liked to see this! I gotta admit though that like with the stand-alone Ant-Man movie done by Wright we umtimately didn't get if I weigh up the pros and cons of having one or the other the MCU integrated version comes out on top.

What I'd really like to see would be a Sandman movie done by those two. Actually I'd like to see a couple of Sandman movies, all at least co-written by Gaiman and directed by different people. We'll see what the JGL project will be.
