Director Joe Johnston took the time to chat with fans, in a LiveChat sponsored by LA Times HeroComplex. Yours truly, even got a chance to post some questions to the man helming the Captain America franchise. Read below for some of the highlights of the chat. Be sure to head over to HeroComplex for TONS of more information on the movie, Jurassic Park 4, The Rocketeer 2, and the potential of a Boba Fett movie. A lot of new details emerged in the chat!

Joe, were you a Cap fan before this project?

Comment From Joe_Johnston
Cap, I was familiar with the character but not necessarily a fan. I see that as an advantage in that I can be objective and hold nothing sacred about the material.

How closely does this follow the comics? Where did Mr. Johnston feel like he could take creative license?

Comment From Joe_Johnston
Kara, the creative team that developed story took all kinds of creative license, we had to in order to translate the comic to the screen. We turned the Nazis into Hydra, the uber nazis. Real Nazis aren't funny, but you can slaughter them in all kinds of interesting ways and get away with it.

Any plans to visit the set of 'The Avengers' and see how things are going?

Comment From Joe_Johnston
Josh, the Avengers movie is in very good hands, and besides, starting tomorrow I'm on vacation.

How was it working with Tommy Lee Jones?

Comment From Joe_Johnston
Geoff, Tommy was just a pleasure to work with. He is a very funny man, something a lot of people don't know about him. He has the world's greatest sense of humor...but VERY dry.

Comment From GraphicCity?
Are you signed on for more Marvel movie projects?

Comment From Joe_Johnston
Graphic City - I have one more Marvel film in my contract...not necessarily a sequel, but Marvel has a huge library of characters that would be fun to explore.

How many costume concepts did your production team come up with before settling on the final movie costume?

Comment From Joe_Johnston
We went through a dozen or more versions of the costume. We eventually settled on a design that is very much from the Brubaker series of CAP.

Joe! You gotta do Doctor Strange! Come on everybody. Doc-tor Strange! Doc-tor Strange!

Comment From Joe_Johnston
I have only so many years left!! I need to do Boba Fett, Jurassic 4, Rocketeer 2, etc. Give me a chance here!!

Did you have final cut on Cap?

Comment From Joe_Johnston
No, I didn't have final cut, but Marvel and I agreed on exactly what the final cut is. Final cut is a double edged sword.

Is there going to be a director's cut of this movie on BLu Ray and would it be your final cut?

Comment From Joe_Johnston
There will be blu-ray, but the release cut is pretty much my cut. We shot a very tight script and there wasn't much to cut out...only three deleted scenes on the dvd, but other extras.

Comment From GraphicCity
Will the sequel be set in the past or present?

Comment From Joe_Johnston
We may or may not take CAP back to the 40's. Not sure yet. At this point we can do anything with him but I want to see AVENGERS first.

Comment From GraphicCity
What would you say is the "thematical" difference between Cap and his DC counterpoint, Superman?

Comment From Joe_Johnston
He's [Cap] a very different kind of character. Simple, humble. determined. Not like your typical "superhero". That's what most appealed to me. That's an easy one. Superman is from another planet. Steve Rogers is the scrawny kid next door.

I know Toby Jones is playing Arnim Zola in the movie...any chance we'll get to see him in his comic book from?

Comment From Joe_Johnston
Great question. If you look VERY, VERY close...you won't see him in his comic book form but you will see a hint of his comic book persona.

Joe, can you talk a little about Hayley Atwell's portrayal of Steve's sweetheart, Peggy Carter?
Comment From Joe_Johnston
Noelene - Hayley Atwell looks like she stepped right out of the 1940's. She is very tough as Peggy and in real life as well. She got the part by making us cry during a screen test when shooting the goodbye scene to Steve. Brilliant acting.

"Captain America: The First Avenger" will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America. As Captain America, Rogers joins forces with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) to wage war on the evil HYDRA organization, led by the villainous Red Skull (Hugo Weaving).

His answer to the Superman question was pretty weak, but I wouldn't expect much from a non-fan. There are similarities between the two, but their life experiences create some distinct differences between them. I feel like Superman protects while Captain America serves.

I agree with BIGBMH. Both Superman and Captain America is essentially American but they symbolize American ideals. Superman is a foreigner, Captain America is a result of America's war policy and politics. Both defenders of the free world. Love them both!

hope the movie is good but it doesn't seem right that he didn't have any respect for the source material. That's rude and disrespectful to cap's creators. Not sure if he has the right attitude, but I do think it's ok to have a little creative license. But he makes it sound like almost the whole movie is creative license. Anyway, he may have just come off wrong, and I'm sure the movie will be good.
