SDCC '11: Idris Elba Campaigns For Luke Cage During Ghost Rider Panel

While discussing his character in Ghost Rider, Idris Elba publicly throws his name into the ring for potential candidates to play Luke Cage. The fans go wild!

captain americaAt the Sony panel for Ghost Rider, Idris Elba publicly states he wants to play Luke Cage.
Info from a Live Blog moderated by Marvel employees Agent_M AND Strommy, Bleeding Cool and Twitter attendees:



Host:Are there any other comic projects you [Elba] would like to do?

Elba: [Takes a deep breath and dramatic pause] Luke Cage, [he says in a deep voice, crowd reportedly goes wild]


In speaking on his Ghost Rider character, Elba goes on to briefly describes him as "a wine-drinking, french, warrior monk."


Now referring back to Luke Cage, Elba said
“We [Marvel] just need to know that you [the fans] want that.”


Does this mean Marvel has spoken to Elba already and is gauging fan reaction to the casting? Or is he just trying to get fan support behind him? Either way, with all this talk about Luke Cage, it seems that Marvel is definitely thinking about the project. In a relatively short panel [40 min.], Elba spent more time talking about Luke Cage than he did Ghost Rider.

I'm pretty sure Luke Cage is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe right? So since he's already Heimdall it would be like Eddie Murphy playing all the Klumps, he would be a great Luke Cage but he can't play him so I choose

Hopefully Luke Cage will be in The Avengers 2 or 3

yeah and hes playing someone in ghost rider so thats another marvel films YES not the Marvel Cinematic Universe but still another comic book moive, and man theres alot of actors wana play Luke Cage even doing there own mini movie mad, AND CAN SOMEONE PLEASEEEE TELL ME HOW TO PUT A PICTURE UP ON THE THIS THE COMMMENT BOX woule be much appreiated

Barely anyone would recognise it's the same actor as Heimdall, they're different is every way, especially in terms of appearance. I say let him audition!

If Chris Evans can play Johnny Storm and then pull off great performances as Steve Rodgers, Then IMO Elba deserves an audition for the role of Luke Cage.

Too bad he did heimdall! He would have been a perfect Luke Cage! Maybe they can pull an Iron man and switch out black actors, so he can do Luke Cage.

@Avenger8 - switching out black actors? Terence Stamp was a black actor. i think that's why Marvel hired another black actor, Don Cheadle, to play the role once they decided to replace Stamp.

it's a weird way of framing the situation. would u say Marvel pulled a Hulk when they switched out white actors by replacing Norton with Ruffalo?

Ehh, might be better to go with a no namer or someone else in general. I'm sure Idris could do it but he's already been Heimdell...

Plus I think a no namer would add a certain amount of freshness to marvel's movies in that we wouldn't really know what to expect.

i don't mean to be touchy or be an ass at u.
i doubt u meant anything derogatory towards the actors or Marvel, but to say that someone pulled a 'something' seems to imply that this is a kind of situation that happens a lot in films.
i'm wondering now, if black actors often get 'switched out' in roles becuz there aren't as many making a living at it. i haven't paid enough attention to most series of films to know if that's true or not. is it?

Chris Evans played the Human Torch in a non-cinematic marvel universe film, plus that FF franchise is dead. Evans can move on. Heimdall needs to stay Heimdall.

He's a great actor, so this could be awesome.

Would liked to have seen Michael Jai White as Cage, but with all the new Spawn news/rumors floating around, I want that to actually happen.

OR, Boris Kodjoe, from Resident Evil Afterlife would be AMAZING!

Elba is a way better actor than Michael Jai or Derek Luke.

If they want to make a good Cage movie and be damned with all, pick Elba for Cage. Heimdall is just a small role.

Black Panther is for Chiwetel Ejiofor, another actor who looks a bit sophisticated and like a calmer badass.

no. Idris is awesome and I love the guy as an actor, but he's already Heimdall, as well as some other character in Ghost Rider. I think he's all set with the Marvel characters.

as for the elba luke cage idea i like the idea of it but i won't get my hopes up. MJW would be great for the part but i'm kinda crossing my fingers for a new better spawn movie.

Idris Elba will most definitely get an audition. I'm glad that the interest in Luke Cage is gaining momentum and we have Isaiah Mustafa to thank for it with his teaser trailer.

Watch one episode of "Luther" on the BBC, and you'll be convinced Elba should play Luke Cage.

I think its interesting that Rampage Jackson just said in an interview last week that he had a meeting with Marvel and hinted at wanting to play Luke Cage. It seems as if everyone wants to get there hands on the role.

Hell no in no way could I see that guy,Chiwetel,playing T'Challa...maybe his father T'Chaka but not him.If anyone I'd say it's up to Derek Luke,Laz Alonso or an unknown actor that'll hopefully have a presence by then to get in the audition and own it.Cause Panther won't even be in development til' 2014 at best,mark my words

CROVL@ Marvel didn't do F4 and there was a few years in between the films. I don't see Marvel using the same actor in the same fashion when Thor was just released recently and talk of Luke Cage is within the next year or two. Don't see it happening.

He's already one character in their cinematic universe, so no. It's one thing to be part of MCU and then Columbia Pictures, but this? No.
