Personally I liked the new Trek movie. So I am looking forward to this sequal. I didn't like most of the older movies. The only older Trek show I kind of enjoyed was First Contact.

I liked the new and the old, at least the ones I've seen. Also - go next gen!

His solution was a good one. Trek allows for both timelines to exist simultaneously. They BOTH happened. A lot of people didn't get that.

Everything split when Scotty transported during warp. Picard is also now Kirk's father but so is Thor.

I love TOS! As a kid, I watched the episodes when Star Trek was a new show. But at 50 years old now, I love this new incarnation. It's not about Shatner & Nimoy, fun actors though they be. It's about Kirk & Spock and that ship. @grif - Q was impaled by Nero's ship when it resurfaced on the other side of the black hole. His dying words were, "Oh my."

He's full of crap and he knows it. The reason he created an alternate timeline was so he wouldn't have to keep track of and be held to proper Trek canon. He wanted his own playground where he could do what he wanted and not be concerned about keeping things consistent. Ego and sloth.

Sorry fans, but that is not MY Star Trek. It's his. And I don't give a $hit.

LMAO! Yossarian has it correct. Star Trek sucked balls until Abrams.

he did an awsome job rebooting Trek, i have watched every movie and each series, even Enterprise. I did not want to see stories that i already seen be remade, Abrams "new" timeline was both an exciting Trek movie and an action packed fun movie. I am a self described Trekkie and love what Abrams did, he had to walk a fine line keeping the Trekkies happy with enough sci-fi stuff but also make it watchable by someone that has never seen anything trek in order for the movie to be successful, a movie has to be successful so that the movie companys want to make more in order to make money. I love this new timeline, i get to see a new take on characters both loved and hated, i am happy he created the new timeline so that he CAN do new and fresh exciting things not already done.

The great thing about Star Trek is the embracing of Many Worlds theory of time travel.

Bear this in mind Trekkies: if the Abrams movie diverges at Kirk's birth, then Star Trek: Enterprise is all still canon.

Oh, and Data's head might still be buried on Earth in a mine.

What I would like to see is a Mirror Universe in the movies.

How can a trekkie fan be mad? Star trek has plenty of history regarding time travel and mirror universes...

He did what no other franchise that's been rebooted could do... use time travel as the catalyst for new stories and yet still tied to the original thru spock

I like the idea that some things might happen differently now! Wht if klingons never become allies but romulans do, or the borg make it to oyr quadtant much earlier,...etcc

How is that not perfect for star trek!!

@ yossarian "Everywhere Trekkies are upset at Abrams for making Star Trek watchable." No the problem is the alternate timeline, he could continue from the maintime line after Voyager ended!

Loved the new Trek, and I'm a fan of all the shpws (except Enterprise) and the films. I would say that not using the scene from the script for the Shatner cameo was a sad turn as it was a GREAT scene, but Shatner being Shatner would've demanded more time since Spock was in more of the film. Everyone cast was spot on to the point it was scary. Bring on the sequel.

I've been a Trek fan for most of my life and have enjoyed all the series equally for what they brought to the franchise. But, what a lot of hardcore Trekkers forget is that after Nemesis, Star Trek as a whole was on its death kneel. Berman and company gave us a lot of crappy stories that had potential and failed to deliver and it seemed as though Trek was about to do the way of the Dodo bird.

Abrams did something that no other director did -- he took a brave chance to boldy go where no one had gone before -- and made much needed changes to bring Trek back to life.

Say what you want fellow Trekkers, whether you like it or not Abrams brought life and spice back into Trek, and made it a exciting talking point again.

@ BeeMo I live breathe the Idea of ST everyday. But your point i have a problem with is they could continue after Nemesis, it wouldn't have to be linked to TNG. But Nemesis did reflect the conflict the Romulan Empire which is linked with DS9. All Iam saying JJ COULD OF BReath new life into ST by continuing to go forward, not backwards with an alternate timeline! Announying!!!!!

I've seen a couple of Star Trek episodes from the different shows. Liked the ones involving the Borg, always thought the ones featuring Klingons should have been better as, IMHO, they're one of the most interesting alien species in Sci-fi. Followed the show Enterprise for a while and found it entertaining but after a while it lost it's charm.

Most of the movies featuring the original cast I've liked (Wrath of Khan, Final Frontier, Undiscovered Country being my favorites) and I had a blast with First Contact. Found the other Next Generation movies awful.

Nothing, tv shows nor films grabbed my attention like Abram's Star Trek. Maybe the fact that I'm a Star Wars fanboy has something to do with it as I've seen the same happen to other people who are SW fans and didn't care for Star Trek before Abram's take on it.

Love what he did for the franchise and hope he keeps developing movies in the altered timeline, as long as they live up to his first entry.

P.S.: Not entirely sold yet on Pine as Kirk.

The 2009 Star Trek was the most impressive franchise reboot to this date.

superbatspiderman - 12/29/2011, 12:36 PM
It was a very smart movie to create this whole altered universe thing because then J.J. can do whatever he wants with the story and it would make sense. That was kind of a genius move on his part.

I don't get why anyone would be against this... we got a fresh new take which completely respects the Original Series, instead of throwing it all away. They even managed to convince Leonard Nimoy to come back, something which many filmmakers had tried and failed to do. If it's good enough for him, then it's good enough for me, and it should be good enough for you too! If anyone has any kind of authority on what is Star Trek and what is not, it's Mr. Spock.

@niknik, I'm with ya on that bro. I'm a fan of the original series and not too keen on Abrams' revision. I woulda been fine if he haven't decide to destroy planet Vulcan and kill Spock's mom. And now there's rumours that he wants to bring Khan into the mix. Swell. I'm surprise the mojority are ok with this, especially the ones who weren't a fan of the original series that much. Abrams is too overrated and whether or not I wanna see his sequel is up in the air at this point.

"when can I direct a space movie?"

Yeah, that's a real understanding of the material right there. Geez. Let's bring bar code scanners to the "space movie".

Trek needed someone who cared for the material, in a real way—and Trek needed the confidence that doing it right would bring in 350 million.

Keep your movies time line and show respect to the Trek fan-base Abrams! Try an end credit scene involving Q and Picard. Something like Q appearing to Picard to tell him how something is off kilter and he need Picard to fix it. Oh, a fan can dream can't he?
DrainBamage

I won't lie, I didn't really care for the new film. The thing is, I had no problem with the series being rebooted, I just didn't care for the way it was rebooted.

Two timelines? That was stupid. He should have just went with a flat-out reboot and not have anchored it to the original.

I've got several other issues with the film, but that's my biggest.

I am a life long fan. I have been watching Star Trek pretty much non stop for close to 40 years. I have seen every episode of every series multiple times and watch any of them that happen to be on if I am awake over anything else, although I no longer plan my evenings around them. This includes the movies as well, heck I even watch the stinkers.

JJ made a brilliant move, the series has been set free! We can have some awesome new adventures that would have never been attempted under the old construct. God bless JJ. He made Trek great again!
BeeMo

@Spock:
I hear what you're saying and totally agree with that too - it would have been nice to see Abrams continue on from where Nemesis left off, the only problem there is that like I said before, ST had lost a LOT of steam.

Movie companies don't want to just cater to franchise fanboys (& girls), but also to the general audience. They want to generate new interest to create an even bigger following for their property.

Going with another TNG or 23rd century ST would not have done that, but going back to the TOS era, and recasting the original crew? That created a considerable buzz, that brought back fanboys, so they could see how they redo it ( or screw it ) and it brought in a newer audience who may not have ever been genuine fans -- but knew of the original cast.

So, in effect going back in time was a huge marketing and money decision that I think worked extremely well for Paramount. The clamor, interest and high anticipation of the sequel tells that story.

I really appreciated this reboot for bringing the Kirk/Spock characters back to life for us. He could have made new characters, but Kirk and Spock are such amazing characters - I loved seeing them on screen again.

Every thing from all the other Star Treks still exist? I didn't realize that. I should have because I've seen every thing Star Trek related. I like the alternate reality Abrams made, we got a whole slew of stories he can change things around on. Who is to say that some stuff doesnt remain the same from the other timeline or maybe it has very subtle changes that all gather up at the end for a big finale. Any Star Trek is worth watching and that's my opinion and it's the only one that matters....to me. Remember how boring the very first Motion Picture was? and how great WoK was???
