Chris Evans Says The One Word That Describes CAPTAIN AMERICA In THE AVENGERS Is "Lonely"

Looks like Cap will have lost MOST but not ALL of his cohorts from the '40s. Who could possibly show up as an elderly war-time comrade?

The Avengers

While speaking to EW, Chris Evans revealed the following about Captain America and his awakening in present-day America:

“I don’t want to ruin anything, but the few people [Steve Rogers knew] who may be alive are probably in their 80’s, and for the most part, everyone is gone,” Evans says. “He never had much family before, but anyone he could possibly consider close has gone by the wayside.”
If there’s one word that describes Cap in The Avengers, Evans says it would be “lonely.”

“Who does he have in the world? Nobody,” Evans says. “Rogers is kind of defined by is his morals and values. In the ‘40s there was much more of value on those things. Things are a little more impersonal these days. It just lends itself to his sense of isolation.”

Based on those statements, I think it's a safe bet that one Cap's war-time buddies, maybe one of The Howling Commandos, may show up in the film, albeit as a very old man. Who do you think it might be or wish it to be?

Captain America

The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is the sixth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is written and directed by Joss Whedon and features an ensemble cast, which includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson. In The Avengers, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., recruits Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America to save the world from destruction.

Development of The Avengers began when Marvel Studios received a grant from Merrill Lynch in April 2005. After the success of the film Iron Man in May 2008, Marvel announced that The Avengers would be released in July 2011. With the signing of Scarlett Johansson in March 2009, the film was pushed back for a 2012 release. Whedon was brought on board in April 2010 and rewrote the screenplay that was originally written by Zak Penn. Production began in April 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before moving to Cleveland, Ohio in August 2011 and New York City in September 2011. The film was converted to 3D in post-production.

Hmm, maybe whoever Stan Lee plays in his cameo?

I can believe that. I mean how many times does he have to say it. He's a man out of his time. It's been 60 [frick]ing yrs of course he's lonely.

It's either Stan Lee's character or somebody else. I still think Stan is playing either the kid Cap saves at the docks or the bully who beats him up

gusto should play one of caps fellow soldiers from training camp. mainly the one that picks on him.

We'll probably have WW2 flashbacks (there's a "ww2 soldier" in IMDB - though not very reliable), so I think we can see some old Gusto war veteran dudes.

Sounds pretty good to me. Pretty much exactly how I would hope they would do his story.

I like MovieMaster's idea. It would be either that I think, or perhaps Peggy. I know she said she hadn't heard of her appearing, but you never know. They might even get another actress to play old Peggy.

I always thought a good scene for the Avengers would be Steve visiting Peggy in an old folks home. She's suffering dementia and Steve finally has his dance with her. When she asks who he is, he simply turns and says, "Just an old friend." (Or something like that).

That would bring a tear to my eye. :(

@ironman53 - I've watched CATFA with commentaries last week and in that part when bucky is saved they clearly say that he won't die with the fall and that experiment has to do with what he will become in the future.

so....
WINTER SOLDIER!

ironman53 - yeah, this had me curious about the commented versions of the other movies. Gotta watch them too.

Johnston also commented on the blueprint that Zola catches when fleeing the factory (with his comicbook android suit)

I think Stan Lee is playing just a random WWII vet who recognizes Cap. Or maybe he's Gilmore Hodge, the soldier that bullied him in basic training.

@ironman53, I'd like in the movie if Steve says to Tony "Howard would be proud" or something along those lines.

Well, that was more depressing than exciting. At least it speaks true to the character.

God damn you, Chris Evans.

Don't worry; in the next Capt. America film, he'll probably have Sharon and Winter Soldier will show up, and Dugan will appear and all will be semi-tolerable again.

I'm betting on Stan Lee being a war buddy. Maybe not part of the Howling Commandos, but as a comrade who admired Captain America from afar and gives him a bit of a pep talk when he needs it.

having the movie costume presented in front of the classic costume really shows just how horrid the movie one is

Lol you guys kill me. If it doesn't look like the comics, you throw a fit. If it does, you say it looks too corny.
I for one think the costume looks pretty damn good (only minor gripe is the helmet). There is no way possible to make a guy running around in an American flag costume not somewhat corny.

I really think it's pretty obvious that the man Tony mistakes with hugh hefner in IM 1, Larry King in IM 2, the guy who drinks the soda in TIH, the truck driver in Thor and the military officer in CATFA and whoever Stan Lee is playing in The Avengers are the same character.

I say we either get a post credits Bucky/Winter Soldier, or we get a dying Peggy in a nursing home/hospital. EmpressSkeith is probably right about Stan Lee's cameo. Unless Stan Lee is actually the watcher...which would explain his appearance in all of these films...

Poor Cap. Supposedly, in The Avengers it is going to be all from his POV.

It makes sense, that we would found out what happened to all of his friends.

And I think Bucky is still alive.

@MovieMaster I like that idea. I think it would be more poignant if Stan Lee was playing an older version of the kid he saved.

It would help Cap put things in perspective.

My money is on an elderly Peggy Carter, and some kind of dance. Too bad they couldn't use an updated version of the Soldier Serum to anti-age her.

Also, the comments about Bucky make sense. But, I think this will be saved for the Cap movie, to develop the Winter Soldier storyline.

An isolated Cap, an eccentric stark, a childish Thor,& a conflicted Banner, i'd say is all in good hands with Joss Whedon who has sort of a track record for characters at odds with each other, Marvel... *Bows head at greatness acheived*

i'm betting Peggy Carter, in her 80's, will be featured. i'd be disappointed if they already have her character died and thus, Evans' Steve would only visit her grave. naaa...having him meeting a very old Peggy, maybe a little senile, would be a more interesting (and more touching) scene..like they did in The Ultimates.
