Game of Thrones is an American medieval fantasy television series created for HBO by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Based on author George R. R. I haven't read any of the Game of Thrones books, but I'm a big Tolkien fan. I voted for "double decapitation" on the Ned Stark vs Boromir" poll. :P

I'm with GRR on almost all of them. I don't see how Gimli beats the Mountain. Me thinks GRR was trying to be modest on that one; or he simply doesn't want to choose Goliath over David. Other than that one, I'm with GRR. Yes, I think a fully-appendaged Jaime Lannister does narrowly beat Aragorn, despite the latter's martial prowess. Whoever won that battle might come out the victor, but maimed or mortally wounded by the battle. There'd be no real winner there.

man, jaime ain't got no chance against aragorn, the guy trained with elves and has almost 80 years of experience, c'mon george be serious..

now i know smaug is one mean dragon but balerion would go all harrenhal on his jewel encrusted ass..

i'm going with the mountain, gimli probably can't even hit him in the chest, upper-cuts are low blows..

melisandre might be able to pull this one off, she can be persuasive herself..

the imp hands down..

and i'm going with secret option #3, odysseus, one of the few sean bean characters to survive the end of the movie..

Gimli is trained to fight giants, and the Mountain has never faced a dwarf like Gimli before, so he'd underestimate him just long enough to realise his mistake as Gimli buries his axe in the Mountain's groin. Even if ready, Gimli would just kneecap him before taking his head off either way.

Gimli's proper bad-ass. Respect the axe.

In agreement with all of his choices except for two.

Aragorn has the advantage over Jamie. Aragorn is a Dunedain, last of the Numenoreans, and thus, by his heritage, is half-elven. He is also well traveled. You have to remember that by the time of the LOTR stories, Aragorn is already much older than he looks (he was actually 87 at the time) and he decades more experience in fighting a number of different enemies. On top of that, he has Anduril, the Flame of the West, the reforged sword that cut the ring from the hand of Sauron; an elvish blade. Jamie has no chance.

The other one I disagree with is Glamdring. Again, Glamdring is an elvish blade forged in Gondolin by the finest smiths ever in Middle Earth. Turgon carried the sword into battle. There's magic in the blade itself. The other sword's just steel.

@ Bumble: I totally agree with you about Aragorn but not so sure what point you're making about Glamdring. Glamdring was Gandalf's sword and doesn't feature in any of these "What If" battles.

Boromir and Stark would both say "[frick] this! It's about time both of us get to live for once! Then they'd walk off hand-in-hand in one of the weirder endings in fantasy fiction. Sean Bean would applaud.

@foxforce: You have to watch the video. Martin goes through and picks who, in his opninon, would win or is the better of the two. That's where Glamdring comes from. He is asked which sword is better:Ice or Glamdring. And, again, Glamdring is not just a sword, just like a green lantern's power ring is not "just a ring." Glamdring originally belonged to Turgon, king of Gondolin, and was a legend among even goblins and trolls. Even after being "lost" for hundreds of years, goblins knew the sword and it's twin, Orcist, as Beater and Biter and were instantly afraid of just the shear site of it.

Quite frankly, I was surprised that he was so pro LOTR over his own work. The guy just jumped way up my positive opinion ladder.

these are silly but fun.

Aragorn would absolutely smoke Jaime, and I like Jaime. Jaime has never faced anything like Aragorn has faced. We're talking Aragorn wielding the flame of the west here.

Smaug would take Balerion.

Gimli takes out The Mountian, and I'd say rather easily. Everyone thinks that the mountain would win because of his size, but against Gimli, and his experience, his size is a disadvantage. The Mountains would have to over extend his swing to hit Gimili so far below him, giving Gimili plenty of time to dodge, Gimili dodges one swing and buries his axe right into the mountain knee, probably cuts his leg in half. boom, down goes the mountain.

Saruman takes out Melisandre.

Tyrion obviously takes out Frodo. (unless frodo has the ring.)

Ned v Boromir is the most even match.......gotta go with Ned on this. Boromir is no joke, but Ned just seems way more battle hardened.

Also, just in defence of Jaime Lannister: while I can't really advocate for a win over Aragorn, I think I'd actually call it a draw. Aragorn's bigger, a Numenorean, and older. At the same time, though, Aragorn's primary skillset is as a scout and hunter, not a soldier, and his default gear does not include armour.

Jaime, by contrast, is one of the best swordsmen in the history of Martin's world, he's fully armoured by default, and his entire life has been literally one long parade of killing other men with a blade.

Remember though, wearing armor is not always beneficial, remember Bron goes up against an armored knight and *chooses* not to wear any armor for a reason. Aragorn would be faster, more agile. An has seen warfare on a level Jaime has never encountered, taking on multiple ring wraiths at the same time,....and by himself.

in Song of Ice and Fire, the book also hints that Ned Stark is likely the only challenge for Jaime.
