"While "The Avengers" posed many visual efffects challenges, one of the larger challenges was pulling together the "tie-in" shot during the third act of the film. Rather than frames, this single shot is measured in minutes on screen and is one of the longest effects shots in the film. It incorporates both practical special effects and extensive digital visual effects by ILM. The New York City environment that serves as the setting for this shot (and virtaully the entire alien invasion) is computer generated by the visual effects team at ILM."

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a shared film universe consisting of superhero film adaptations based on characters and concepts from Marvel Comics. Phase I of the MCY saw Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, and Captain America: The First Avenger share themes, items and concepts before culminating in 2012's The Avengers. A risky endeavor, the MCU has proved a success with Marvel's The Avengers currently ranking as the third highest-grossing film of all time. The MCU is guiding by Marvel top executives including Kevin Feige, Jeremy Latcham, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winterbaum and Joss Whedon.

The concept will continue on in Phase II, which currently has a film slate of Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2. Ant-Man is currently rumored to kickstart Phase III.

Marvel's The Avengers or simply The Avengers is a 2012 American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is the sixth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is scripted and directed by Joss Whedon and features an ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Stellan Skarsgård and Samuel L. Jackson. In The Avengers, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., recruits Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor to form a team that must stop Thor's adoptive brother Loki from subjugating Earth.

The Avengers premiered on April 11, 2012, at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California. The film received positive reviews from most film critics and set or tied numerous box office records, including the biggest opening weekend in North America and the fastest film to gross $1 billion. The Avengers grossed $1.51 billion worldwide, and became the third highest-grossing film of all time. The film was released on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on September 25, 2012. A sequel to be written and directed by Whedon is scheduled for release on May 1, 2015.

As much as I love this scene after seeing it so many times I found a HUGE flaw in it. When Black Widow jumps on the aircraft leaving Cap it goes straight down the street a couple blocks then Iron Man comes in and shoots another craft and attention shifts to him. Iron man takes ONE right turn and goes down a street meeting Cap. Which makes no damn sense cause Iron Man following the same path Widow was taking originally would have had to take THREE right turns then fly straight to meet Cap again.

If someone else has a different opinion how this scene makes sense please tell me.

eewwwwww,so much green screen :(

nah,kust kidding,that shot was AWESOME.
BackwardGalaxy - 12/27/2012, 11:02 AM
It's funny how awkward that one dude is. He probably got picked on mercilessly as a kid and now all those idiots are totally pumped by this movie. And who made it? The awkward creepo.
TheShakeBake - 12/27/2012, 11:09 AM
@Intruder haha well as cool as the repulsor ray off of the shield was you have a point. But seriously go check the scene out starting when Captain gives Widow the boost onto the craft and just keep track of how many times it turns, i bet no on catches it cause it is the coolest part of the film so everyone is focusing on that. Cap is in front of the same building he gives widow the lift when Iron man comes by, so he doesn't move at all.
cmax - 12/27/2012, 11:10 AM
so [frick]in sick.
TurdFergunson - 12/27/2012, 11:24 AM
that moment at the Avengers midnight release when Iron Man fired into Cap's shield and half the theater lost their breath and the other half cheered.....epic moment in my opinion. And even today while watching it in my living room, that moment, I can never get enough.
Azazel1 - 12/27/2012, 12:47 PM
Are the Chitauri the robot army from The Phantom Menace who all die at the end when their mothership is destroyed?
No wait the shitauri were the one's from The Avengers who were actually not even robots and all die when their mothership is destroyed which when you think about it is even more retarded.

I seem to confuse Transformers and The Phantom Menace with The Avengers sometimes because let's face it, they are all similar...
TheTaskmaster - 12/27/2012, 12:48 PM
@Azazel Nice try troll. Maybe your precious DC will get Superman right for once after the millionth attempt.

Man I wish I was the guy in the mo cap suit Scarlett was riding ;)
IgnurRant - 12/27/2012, 12:59 PM
Epic battle? More like a 15 minute skirmish.
Jaspion - 12/27/2012, 1:07 PM
Best scene ever.
Fogs - 12/27/2012, 3:06 PM

marvelstudios - 12/27/2012, 5:24 PM
I always wondered how they filmed that scene.
MarcusStrong85 - 12/27/2012, 6:11 PM
This scene was so awesome and that's the incredible thing about The Avengers, The Ultimate Superhero Team-up in the history of Comic Based Movies.

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!!
Bam - 12/27/2012, 7:31 PM
Without a doubt the absolute best action scene of the year and immediately in the top five comicbook movie scenes of all time.

I dare you to argue against that.
CelluloidDreams - 12/27/2012, 8:28 PM
Regarding the Repulser Ray/Shield-maneuver: at this point, Whedon had established that the team communicated via a com-link. The likely answer was, in that tracking shot, we (the audience) simply wasn't privvy to the exchange between IM & Cap
AUSSYACE - 12/27/2012, 9:33 PM
I never watch any extra's or features like this...

You seen one of em you've seen em all...

EarOne - 12/28/2012, 2:37 AM
how come they don't give us behind the scene stuff as detailed as the ones in the first Iron Man in the dvd (blu ray, mind you).

while i appreciate the 90-min. building marvel cinematic universe featurette, i really wanna see all the cool 'making of' stuff for The Avengers.
Jolt17 - 12/28/2012, 2:45 AM
Man, I can spend the rest of this day watching this visual breakdown for a hundred times, and I believe I won't be able to keep my jaw stuck on my skull. The smartly-crafted continuous shot, the stunning CGI I still can't believe most of them aren't actually real, the smoothness of the merging between the real actors with the CGI products, the massive scale...wow. Just wow. Truly an accomplishing feat this movie is.

God bless Joss Whedon and ILM for the best moment in any CBM, ever.
Azazel1 - 12/28/2012, 5:22 AM
Chitauri-Most generic and useless villains in a CBM ever...
fortycals - 12/28/2012, 6:18 AM
IMO best action sequence ever.
CaptainRedFurySpain - 12/28/2012, 11:49 AM
Best sequence ever, best CBM ever and definitely the best movie of 2012.

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!!!
TheCaptain - 12/28/2012, 6:21 PM
@Azazel,
Yo will you please just [frick] off. You type that same damn thing in every Avengers article.
wallhead - 12/29/2012, 6:18 AM
i finally realize why cap reminds me of a power ranger. its not just his suit. but his movements are so exaggerated.
wallhead - 12/31/2012, 11:23 PM
