Joss Whedon Wanted The STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Gig Before Remembering He Had THE AVENGERS Sequel

When news broke about Disney's acquisition of LucasFilm, Joss Whedon's initial reaction was 'maybe I should see if I can get the job'. That is, before he remembered he already had a billion dollar movie franchise to steer. But he does have an idea of what he'd like to see in Episode 7.

"I'm as angry as you should be," Whedon said about the subject of his unavailability. "When I heard that I was like, 'I wonder... no, I really can't do that. Oh, I already have a job.' I wouldn't clear the Avengers. I'm having so much fun with that sequel right now, just with the script, that I couldn't imagine not doing it."

Knee deep in the S.H.I.E.L.D. television series for ABC, Whedon told CNN that the show is reminding him how "taxing television can be".

"I'd forgotten how much work TV was so I'm cranky at everybody all the time," said the director of The Avengers. "But it's really fun. We have a beautiful ensemble and we're having so much fun coming up with the stories. It really is like working at Marvel Comics, which was a dream of mine as a kid because this little book 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' that not that many people read ...[The show's] not as big as the movies [and] we're telling smaller stories but we get to do it more often. “

Even though he only thought about Star Wars for a brief moment before coming to his senses, Whedon still says he knows what he'd personally like to see from the next installment in the Star Wars franchise. "Oh I've got a lot of things. Where's my list I'm carrying on me?" Whedon joked. "But you know, I'd like to see a little edge. We all missed the Han [Solo] of it. It got very portentous, which was justified by the story, but I think we'd all like to see a little anarchy in the mix."

Marvel's The Avengers or simply The Avengers is a 2012 American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is the sixth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is scripted and directed by Joss Whedon and features an ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Stellan Skarsgård and Samuel L. Jackson. In The Avengers, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., recruits Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor to form a team that must stop Thor's adoptive brother Loki from subjugating Earth.

The Avengers premiered on April 11, 2012, at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California. The film received positive reviews from most film critics and set or tied numerous box office records, including the biggest opening weekend in North America and the fastest film to gross $1 billion. The Avengers grossed $1.51 billion worldwide, and became the third highest-grossing film of all time. The film was released on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on September 25, 2012. A sequel to be written and directed by Whedon is scheduled for release on May 1, 2015.

Well he came a long way since BUFFY!

Damn BUFFY, ANGEL, FIREFLY, been a fan of his for so long and he managed to not only bring out the best CBM of last year (actually the decade so far), he would make an awesome STAR WARS movie!

Sill... AVENGERS 2 is a must! :p

C'mon, HANK & JAN please and can't wait for Episode 7, 8 and 9 of STAR WARS... Old Luke Skywalker, oh [frick] yeah!

Fingers crossed.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 1/12/2013, 1:18 AM
ANARCHY RULES!
gaikinger - 1/12/2013, 1:36 AM
He would be great for Star Wars.
Jolt17 - 1/12/2013, 1:43 AM
Not only he'd never be available to do the flick, I've never wanted him to do it either; not sure why, but I just don't see him fitting in it...and perhaps, because I want a no-name to take the job and possibly/hopefully blow me away with it! Don't get me wrong, I love the man with all my heart. He even made me read X-Men, through Astonishing X-Men. But for now, I just want him to stick around with Marvel stuffs.
superpooper - 1/12/2013, 1:43 AM
He's come a long way, but I could still see a little Buffy in Avengers. The Thanos/Emissary dude scenes in particular. Those sets were a little hokey. That shit has to get better if they go cosmic. Of course Serenity had great space scenes so I'm not too worried, but maaan, on second viewing those space scenes in Avengers looked pretty baaaad.
Jollem - 1/12/2013, 1:47 AM
well...he kinda done star wars

:)
Tevii - 1/12/2013, 1:58 AM
Whedon would make a GREAT Star Wars movie.
I hope he gets to work on one of the sequels
DukeAcureds - 1/12/2013, 2:10 AM
Damn. There goes the most sane and obviously perfect choice.
Now it has to be Matthew Vaughn.
Or Brad Bird, I suppose, but MI4 was not exactly Star Wars, so maybe not.
Old Joss is entirely spot on with what he says here. That was the main failing of the prequels. No edge. And I don't think it was justified by the story, as Joss puts it, either. I mean if they fit in an OTT comic relief character in there, they can put an edgier character or two in there.
I mean, how on Earth can you do a trilogy about the fall of a Jedi to the Dark Side and not have it be about as edgy as Star Wars could ever possibly get?
ReeferInferno - 1/12/2013, 2:30 AM
lol, so many people in the comments are sucking whedon's d, but don't get me wrong i love the guys work, but if i said the same things about nolan i'd be accused of being a nolanite, such pathetic fanboys
MrReese - 1/12/2013, 2:34 AM
lol
DukeAcureds - 1/12/2013, 2:42 AM
Nolanite@ I would never accuse you of being one of those.
DukeAcureds - 1/12/2013, 2:42 AM

Funsize - 1/12/2013, 2:44 AM
He's already involved with Marvel's movies so I'd rather see someone else direct it.
Jollem - 1/12/2013, 2:54 AM
@ReeferInferno - "nolanite" is just name-calling. ignore it and leave it at the playground :)
ReeferInferno - 1/12/2013, 3:01 AM
@DukeAcureds am i a nolanite if enjoy both nolans and whedons work? please if anything you're the whedonite
DukeAcureds - 1/12/2013, 3:06 AM
Reef@ Dude, I'm just tickling your bowling balls. I love 'em both, myself.
ReeferInferno - 1/12/2013, 3:11 AM
@Duke well maybe I don't like people tickling my bowling balls...
DukeAcureds - 1/12/2013, 3:16 AM
But they're all shiny, now.
Lightsplasher - 1/12/2013, 3:19 AM
Disney should push to later Star Wars Episode VII so that Whedon could finish his work on the Avengers Franchise and so that he could make Star Wars
thalidomide - 1/12/2013, 3:19 AM
I'm surprised tea isn't here yet, he's missing all the ball tickling in this article :p

Anyways I'm with Jolt with this one.
ReeferInferno - 1/12/2013, 3:20 AM
wait what are we talking about?
DukeAcureds - 1/12/2013, 3:23 AM
Balls? Oh! Star Wars! We were talking about Star Wars. Ahem.
INSTANTJUSTICE - 1/12/2013, 3:28 AM

The sensible thing would be to wait until he's ready.

marvel72 - 1/12/2013, 3:29 AM
he would of done good job of it but i want him to focus all of his time on phase 2.
DukeAcureds - 1/12/2013, 3:36 AM
Reading those last two comments, I'da sworn we were still talking about ball-tickling.
NeoBaggins - 1/12/2013, 3:45 AM
Thank god. Lucas has already made three STAR WARS films full of color and sound with no heart. They need to put the story and character back into STAR WARS and as fun as Avengers is, the new STAR WARS has to have some substance outside of crash and bang.

They need to pick the right director. Not IT directors.
NoAssemblyReqd - 1/12/2013, 5:04 AM
Would be weird to have a Castle crossover (as they've already established the Marvel U. as a fictional comic book world on that show), but I'm all for cameo appearances by Mr. Fillion as something else.

Shouldnt be too hard to wrangle, since both shows are ABC Productions made in L.A.
Jolt17 - 1/12/2013, 5:11 AM
You know what kind of a new talent this franchise need? Like this guy: Kaleb Lechowski, the director/writer/animator of R'Ha (the amazing short film that hit the web yesterday).

He could be really surprising.
Jollem - 1/12/2013, 5:23 AM
^that's pretty cool
marvel72 - 1/12/2013, 6:14 AM
@ jolt17

awesome short film mate,i would watch a star wars film directed by him.
FirstAvenger - 1/12/2013, 6:23 AM
Meh, stick to the Avengers.
PaulRom - 1/12/2013, 8:16 AM
He can still direct Episode VIII and/or IX, or perhaps one of the spin-offs. I'd kill to see a Whedon-ized Star Wars.
beane2099 - 1/12/2013, 8:23 AM
Pretty positive we're gonna see Whedon on Episode 8 or 9.
Jolt17 - 1/12/2013, 9:51 AM
marvel72 and Jollem: Cheers, hopefully they'll really search for new talents like him in the process.
Azazel1 - 1/12/2013, 10:32 AM
Well we all know Joss Wheedon LOVED the Phantom Menace. He stole it's ending for his film because he could not come up with any original ideas of his own.

Shitty director

Shitty writer

Terrible choice-glad he is not doing it...
Azazel1 - 1/12/2013, 10:33 AM
@jolt-Awesome post/video ^^^^
Azazel1 - 1/12/2013, 10:34 AM
@Neobaggins-Totally agree with you, The Avengers was loads of fun but with 0 substance...

Star Wars needs some real depth to it, some heart, real drama...
SkateandDestroy88 - 1/12/2013, 12:14 PM
Joss Whedon should just direct Avengers, Star Wars, and Justice League. Haha they need to clone him duh
SkateandDestroy88 - 1/12/2013, 12:15 PM
That post from @ Jollem is so awesome.
Especially Samuel L Jackson
TheSisko - 1/12/2013, 12:16 PM
What about Tim Minear if he is not too busy with American Horror Story?
