J.J. Abrams Developing HALF-LIFE And PORTAL Movies

J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and video game company Valve Software will work together to bring Half-Life and Portal to the big screen. Video game adaptations look to be all the rage at the moment and could finally be getting their due in Hollywood.

Don't worry he won't be directing, he'll be busy with other things....probably. But his production company Bad Robot will be teaming with Valve Software to adapt some of each others properties for video games and films. BR will help Valve make movies and Valve will help BR make video games. "We sort of reached the point where we decided that we needed to do more than talk,"said Gabe Newell of Valve. Video game adaptations appear to be in a bit of a resurgence with recognizable talent signing up for films such as:

World of Warcraft--Duncan Jones to direct, Johnny Depp rumored to star
Need for Speed -- Scott Waugh to direct, Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots and Michael Keaton to star
Mortal Kombat: Legacy 2 -- Kevin Tancharoen to direct, Casper Van Dien, Brian Tee, Cary Tagawa to star
Splinter Cell -- Tom Hardy to star
Assassins Creed -- Michael Fassbender to star

is JJ Abrams the new Del Toro? developing a 1000 projects on the side whilst directing pretty good movies themselves.
LMB10 - 2/6/2013, 10:33 AM
[frick]ing yes. Best news in ages.
Nomadic1 - 2/6/2013, 10:35 AM
VG's to movies do not seem to work well. Some do, some don't. As cool and fun as Portal is, not sure if it will work as a movie.
DaenerysTargaryen - 2/6/2013, 10:39 AM
Its official: JJ Abrams is trying to form a Sci-fi monopoly

Jollem - 2/6/2013, 10:40 AM
i've never played these, but i've seen my roommate and brother play 'em. they'd be good for movies
SuperDude001 - 2/6/2013, 10:58 AM
If anyone could do it, I think Abrams would be a good contribution. I wish he'd stop being involved in some many things, even if he's not directing everything.

Although the main thing I don't get is how a Portal movie would work.

HOLY $HIT $TORM!! A good Half Life movie would be huge. That game has an awesome story line. Lets hope it doesnt get the "Halo Movie" treatment.
heisei24 - 2/6/2013, 11:04 AM
A Portal movie?Hell yes!
gr3yfox - 2/6/2013, 11:06 AM
Ugh, I'm so over these characters to be honest. We have JJ doin' ep.7. Let's leave it at that. Stand alone films should be something like an "Old Republic" story or something! Who wouldn't want to see thousands of Jedi's and Sith fighting!

They seem to fit over at Bad Robot.

sexfoodcomics - 2/6/2013, 11:13 AM
Brad Pitt for Gordan Freeman!!!!!
jj2112 - 2/6/2013, 11:16 AM
I agree mattspen, I no longer remember what happened in the previous games. Seriously, if JJ focuses on pure action (something he did well in Alias and IM3) the movie could work, but he should stay away from any mysteries this time.

Niether of which I'm interested in...

I think Leo, who probably wont be in a CBM, will now get his chance to do one of the great video games.
TheRedSkull - 2/6/2013, 11:27 AM
He's slowly becoming the next Nolan, where he's seen as a god among other directors. Seriously, stop lumping so much on these talented directors or else they're gonna [frick] up badly
HughJasol - 2/6/2013, 11:37 AM
Bryan Cranston as Gordon Freeman! Do it.
Nomadic1 - 2/6/2013, 11:37 AM

EsoOne - 2/6/2013, 12:04 PM
Stop this madness and make Cloverfield 2 already.
Fogs - 2/6/2013, 12:07 PM
A Half-Life movie. That's something I really want to see. And since an Aperture Tech ship was seen in the end of Ep. 2 there is definitelly connection between the 2 stories.
spanky87 - 2/6/2013, 12:10 PM
I'm starting to get really sick of JJ abrams
GodzillaKart - 2/6/2013, 12:15 PM

NathimusPrime - 2/6/2013, 12:23 PM
does anyone else hate valve? not as a developer but as a company,i mean, not becuase there bad, becuase there far from it, but ive never seen a video game company ignore its fans so completely and not give people the game they desperatley want and they themselves intinded to make in the first place,
come on, where is half life 3, hell, where is half life 2 episode 3, come on valve! give us what we want?
at least what i want anyway, i dont speak for anyone but myself after all
NathimusPrime - 2/6/2013, 12:23 PM
i cant spell
Britanic - 2/6/2013, 12:39 PM
Hugh Laurie or Bryan Cranston for Gordon freeman!
NorseGod - 2/6/2013, 12:45 PM
Oh, I sooooo hope they are shared universe!
DrDoom - 2/6/2013, 12:54 PM
@NathimusPrime

I totally agree. They make some good games (although most of them are extremely overrated) but they completely disregard their fans and treat them like garbage.

Bryan Cranston is an ok choice for Gordon Freeman

RedBaron2814 - 2/6/2013, 1:28 PM
Wow... This...is actually happening.
Floke - 2/6/2013, 1:37 PM
If u are a dude and shoot one portal in mid hight, then the next one head hight.. you just have to imagen eating a hot dog and have no need to be flexible.. I wonder if that scene would be in the movie.. or someone ge told to go ***** yourselfe and he would go like, oh.. ok, I just need to find two close walls first..
Ric - 2/6/2013, 2:12 PM
a Half Life movie would be so [frick]ing awesome!!!
SwingsetKnight - 2/6/2013, 3:27 PM
So what you're telling me is that J.J. Abrams is now "the guy" for all science fiction ever?

...crap.
Fogs - 2/6/2013, 4:45 PM
@Floke - hahaha looks like you dedicated a lot of thought to it already, huh?
