Shane Black On The Chances Of An R-rated Marvel Studios Movie

Who does Iron Man 3 director Shane Black think would be ideal for an R-rated Marvel film? Often when this subject comes up, names like Daredevil, Punisher and Blade are bandied about but Black doesn't go for the obvious choices, his answers just might surprise you.

When you think about Marvel Comics characters that are suited to more adult interpretations or adaptations, characters like Daredevil, Punisher, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, etc. immediately spring to mind. However, Shane Black drops two characters that most fans would never dream of seeing in an R-rated Marvel film. But don't take his suggestions as gospel, the director is quick to point out that the two individuals he names probably won't get an adult feature film considering the current climate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But when it comes to these things with Marvel you never know; is it notable that he avoids the obvious choices or is he just shooting from his sleeve?

Black: I've always felt that certain characters could be adapted in a cool way. Quentin Tarantino kind of poisoned the well with Django, but I always thought there was a 1970s version of Black Panther, which was a period that could be really cool and involved a lot of racial tensions of the time. That's not gonna happen. Nick Fury, I adored growing up. If you ever read the ones that [Jim] Steranko did for Tales of Suspense followed by Nick Fury, the stand-alone number one through eight, some of the best comics ever made. [But now] you have Sam Jackson, who's 60 years old and sort of plays a patriarchal figure.

Do you agree with his comment above? Think we'll ever see a more adult take à la Marvel Knights, ever grace a movie screen? Sound off in the comment section below with your thoughts and opinions.

Well, it was Strange Tales but at least Shane's trying.
jerryblake - 3/5/2013, 11:07 AM
Ghost Rider. Get the rights back and adapt The Road To Damnation (by Ennis) already. Make it R.

jazzman - 3/5/2013, 11:07 AM
@batz11

Luke Cage and Iron Fist (Heroes for Hire) should be PG-13 not R-Rated. if marvel make the movie in a similar tone to Justin Lin Fast Five the movie will be great.

Knightrider - 3/5/2013, 11:10 AM
Set in the Marvel cinematic universe probably not, but that's not to say Marvel won't create almost a "Justice League Dark" with some of their grittier characters, maybe even retain Sam Jacksob Nick Fury and make out these guys are hired outside of the Avengers project to take on the less glamerous missions heck just call it "Dark Avengers" or "Secret Avengers"
JerBear - 3/5/2013, 11:13 AM
What studio does Disney release their R rated movies through?
LucasMend - 3/5/2013, 11:14 AM
Heroes for Hire! No luke cage or iron fist solo movies, get them both in one movie, Heroes for Hire, R-RATED!
SotoJuiceMan - 3/5/2013, 11:15 AM
Marvel should really hit on that Marvel Knights part. I really wanna see some R rated Marvel movies that are just as good as this whole Phase 1 and 2 shit that we're getting. Like Iron Fist...or Luke Cage maybe. They shouldn't be marketed just as action figures.

INSTANTJUSTICE - 3/5/2013, 11:19 AM

There will be no R-rated Marvel films. Just ain't gonna happen. Most R-rated films have tanked at the box-office in the last few years.
jerryblake - 3/5/2013, 11:21 AM
punisher should go like this

Rated R.

TheAbomination - 3/5/2013, 11:23 AM
I highly doubt there will ever be an R-rated film in the MCU. Marvel/Disney wants to keep marketing this franchise to kids as well as adults.

But if we do get one, it'll likely be Daredevil. Also, I'm really digging all this IM3 news today!!
jazzman - 3/5/2013, 11:24 AM
@JerBear

Touchstone Pictures

@Batmanoncrack

Marvel dont own the film rights to Deadpool.
marvel72 - 3/5/2013, 11:27 AM
r-rated daredevil movie would be a dream come true,add the likes of the punisher & you've got a sure fire hit.
jazzman - 3/5/2013, 11:28 AM

Adapt Year One.

Reboot it all.

Avengers52 - 3/5/2013, 11:32 AM
I think we will see all those characters adapted but not rated R.
jessepostal - 3/5/2013, 11:35 AM
If they give these characters an R rating they lose out on their biggest draw. Don't see it happening
90caliber - 3/5/2013, 11:38 AM
I would love to see an R rated Shang Chi movie. Always was a favorite of mine since th 70'S.
StrangerX - 3/5/2013, 11:39 AM
An R rated heros for Hire
KarlKingNerdsBrandNewGroove - 3/5/2013, 11:45 AM
I loved Punisher : Warzone, now troll me please.
jazzman - 3/5/2013, 11:45 AM
@jessepostal

i think u be wrong about that. imagine they did Blade as a PG-13 movie everyone would be p!ssed.

characters like Blade and The Punisher should be done as R-Rated. also Disney has distributed R-Rated movies.
sephiroth211 - 3/5/2013, 11:48 AM

I enjoy the movie as well @KarlKingNerd. We all know it could have been better, but the movie is still entertaining.
sephiroth211 - 3/5/2013, 11:52 AM
@Nomis: Howard ftw!!

Whovian - 3/5/2013, 11:58 AM
Howard the Duck!

I WOULD CRY IF MARVEL DOES THIS.. WITH JOY!!!!!!!! PLEASE BRING A MOONKNIGHT CAMEO A KING THAT KILLS, A BULLS EYES THAT KILLS!! A MOONKNIGHT SCHIZO FLICK!!!
fortycals - 3/5/2013, 12:06 PM
Cant believe no ones said this but a R rated Namor would kill. All the blue tittied alanteans, you could hope for. Namor dropping a tidal wave on polluters, or rippping them apart. Sea monsters eating people.

How about a R rated Dr. Strange. Should be more of a horror, rather than a fantasy.

jimoakley666 - 3/5/2013, 12:07 PM
Yeah, unfortunately, it's not going to happen. Marvel need to sell them toys! The only hope we have is a Punisher movie...
jimoakley666 - 3/5/2013, 12:08 PM
...with Ray Stevenson back as Frank.
NoJobBOB - 3/5/2013, 12:14 PM
Would love DD And Punisher (a Better one at least).

Not sure if I'd like a Deadpool movie. I guess it would be cool.
jazzman - 3/5/2013, 12:16 PM
Gerard Butler should be the new Punisher if they do a reboot movie.

JatevinM - 3/5/2013, 12:19 PM
I'm not understanding why he felt the need to mention Tarantino or Django
hope420 - 3/5/2013, 12:22 PM
I'd love to see an R rated Moon Knight!!!!
RamonSuarez - 3/5/2013, 12:24 PM
No more Punisher reboots.

The experiment has failed.

Go with a Punisher TV series on a cable channel like HBO, Showtime, Star or even FX.
Wrecker - 3/5/2013, 12:25 PM
Why not a villain e.g The Wrecker ;P
RamonSuarez - 3/5/2013, 12:26 PM
@JatevinM -

Because Django explored entire blaxploitation angle he wanted to reinvent for Black Panther.
Bread - 3/5/2013, 12:29 PM
umm... Deadpool
WorstUserNameEver - 3/5/2013, 12:29 PM
By the time Phase 3 is coming to an end the young kids who are going nuts for avengers right now will be heading into their latter teens... and looking for something a bit more edgy.

Their will be a huge audience for the things we currently love and then Marvel will tap that for all it is worth, while maintaining their standard MO to trap... I mean entice future children... and the cycle will continue until a future Joel Schumacher-a-like ruins it all.
MrMartinMarvel - 3/5/2013, 12:48 PM
Let's see there's Punisher, Moon Knight, Blade, maybe Ghost Rider. As for all the others HECK NO! An R rated Daredevil isn't necessary, nor is a Heroes for Hire movie. How would you make HFH R rated anyway? Tits?
Nomadic1 - 3/5/2013, 1:11 PM
Gusto for Punisher

TheHeat - 3/5/2013, 1:13 PM
I would LOVE to see an R-rated Deadpool movie. Stupid Fox.
Nomadic1 - 3/5/2013, 1:21 PM
This would be so cool set in the 70's and rated R

Nomadic1 - 3/5/2013, 1:23 PM
@Gusto "...solo iron fist..."

Yea, ummm, I'll let someone else respond to that
marvel72 - 3/5/2013, 1:32 PM
punisher warzone is a guilty pleasure of mine.
ibravosp5 - 3/5/2013, 1:39 PM
Dead pool
parkerray - 3/5/2013, 1:51 PM
@Nomad Love that pic. Gotta have Daughters of the Dragon.

Solo movies always turn into an hour long origin or more. Then just when it gets good...the movie didn't make enough. So we start all over.

I just want to see some justice exacted. Violently. Marvel Knights or Heroes for Hire, either way.
